Notes for Sarah RUCKER
Biography
Sarah Rucker, wife (probably second wife) of Andrew Derryberry, was born about 1775 in North Carolina. Much
information about her comes from her husband's Revolutionary War pension file, in which she applied for a widow's
pension after his death. Her name is spelled Reucher in the record, and it is likely she was a daughter of Joseph
Rucker, who is found in the 1790 census in 13th Company, Morgan Dist., Burke Co., NC, not far from Hannah Derreberry.
Joseph's household consisted of 3 males over 16, 5 males under 16, and 2 females.
Andrew lived with himself and one female in 1790, so assuming this female was his wife and that the marriage date of
1795 given in his pension file below is accurate, Sarah Rucker was a second wife. The following information can all be
found in her husband's Revolutionary War pension file, no. W10312, in which she applied for a widow's pension following
his death.
Statement of Sarah Derreberry of Madison Co., TN, age 75, widow of Andrew, made 12 Mar 1850. "Widow of Andrew
Derreberry who was a private in the Revolutionary War and for several years previous to his death a pensioner... She was
married to the said Andrew Derreberry about the 15 day of November [1795] and that her husband the aforesaid Andrew
Derreberry died about the 5 day of October 1839, that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the army...."
A former neighbor also contributed the following statement, on 17 Dec 1850. "State of North Carolina, County of Burke.
... Christopher Pearson, a resident of said County, aged 87 years or thereabouts ... declares that he was well acquainted
with Andrew Derreberry who formerly lived in this County, that the said Andrew was reputed and believed in the
neighborhood where he lived to have been a soldier in the War of the Revolution -- that he recollects after said War,
about the year 1795 as deponent believes, that the said Andrew Derriberry was married to one Sarah Reucker with whom he
was also well acquainted -- that the said Sarah lived in the immediate neighborhood of Deponent and recollects
distinctly that on the day which the parties were married that the said Sarah borrowed from him a mare to ride to the
house of one John Hall a Justice of the Peace at that day and time who solemnized most of the matrimonial rites in the
neighborhood where Deponent lived. -- Deponent further swears that the said Andrew Derreberry and wife continued to
live in Burke County for fifteen or twenty or perhaps more years when they removed to the State of Tennessee as this
Deponent is informed and believes." Christopher further stated that he was not present at the marriage.
Another statement from the file, by Wm. S. Sudderth, Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for Burke Co.,
and which modern genealogists will no doubt find horrific: "I have searched diligently in my office for the marriage
bond in the before mentioned case and that is is not on file in my office. It may not be amiss to state from 15 years
ago in removing the records from the old court house to the present building a number of old records were considered of
no use and were not preserved, among which I am satisfied were a number of marriage bonds filed previous to the year AD
1800."
The widow's pension papers were filed at Decaturville on 10 Mar 1851 by D. E. A. McElrath, who stated that he hoped the
information was sufficient, but "if not you will please instruct me, and thus confer a favor of gratitude upon an old
lady who at furthest can survive but a few years." Evidently the pension was granted, and she received back pay to
1848.
Sarah's whereabouts in 1840, immediately after the death of her husband, are unknown. She is not listed in the census
on her own, nor is she in her son Michael's household. By 1850, however, she was living with Michael in Madison Co.
It was most likely there that she died in 1855. She is buried in the Old Clover Creek Cemetery on the Madison /
Hardeman Co. line.

Records of Old Clover Creek Cemetery (Medon, TN [Madison/Hardeman Co. line]):

[This age disagrees with the 1850 census, but the death date is probably correct.]
