Birth: 24 Aug 1664 Surrey, England
Death: 1 May 1721 (aged 56) Deep Bottom, Henrico County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Saint John's Episcopal Churchyard, Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia, USA

Bio:
Bartholomew Stovall arrived in the American colonies from England as an indentured servant in 1684. According to historians, who have published at least three books naming their sources, the family originally came to south England from France in the 16th century and eventually settling in Surry. Besides Stovall, the family spelled the surname Stoffold, Stovold, or Stowel depending what document or year. His birth date, August 24, 1665, is documented by Quaker records of Guilford that currently resides in the Library of the Religious Society of Friends, Friend's House, in London, England. Since the Church of England was the only recognized church in England and attendance was mandatory, his father had been fined for not attending church. Born the only child of George and Joan Tickner Stoffold, his father died on November of 1665 during London's Bubonic plague, leaving him an infant destined to live his life in poverty. His father was buried in St. Mary's Churchyard Cemetery in Albury. He was named in honor of his grandfather Bartholomew Ticker. When he was ten years old, his mother placed him in an apprenticeship shortly before she died at age 57. To become a more accepted candidate for immigration to America, he was baptized into the Church of England at age 18 on November 11, 1683 at Church of St Peter and St. Paul in Albury. An orphan, he sailed from England on a ship with Captain Peter Pagan to the colony of Virginia. On July 7, 1684, he had signed an agreement with John Bright, a merchant in London, to work four years for the cost of his passage to the colonies. Upon reaching Virginia, he became the indentured servant of Richard and Elizabeth Kennon. After fulfilling his indentured obligations, he became a farmer on 318 acres next to Deep Creek and the James River. On August 8, 1693 he married Susannah "Ann" Burton and had five sons and two daughters. His will was probated on May 1, 1721. His middle child, born 1698 to 1700, was John Stovall, a proven CDXVIIC ancestor as well as a Revolutionary War patriot, married Dorcas Drury in 1732 in Virginia. After relocating to Granville County, North Carolina, John, along with four adult sons and one son-in-law, Owen Griffin, took Oath of Allegiance in 1778 to support the independence of the colonies. John served in the Militia as well as donated supplies. Online source, My Family Tree, states he was St. John's Church, Henrico City, Virginia, but there are concerns that this cemetery was founded in 1741 and he died 1721.

Birth: Aug. 24, 1665

Death: May 1, 1721
Deep Bottom
Henrico County
Virginia, USA
Bartholomew, the first to emigrate to America on 7 Jul 1684, was born on August 24, 1665 in Albury, Srrey [Surrey] County, England to George and Joan Stoffold. His birth was recorded four times in the Quaker Records of Guildfor with two different dates, as Bartholomew Stowell. He was baptized at the age of 18 on November 11, 1683, in the Espiscopal Church (Church of St Peter and St. Paul) at Albury. He may have done this in order to emigrate since Quaker and other non Espiscopal religions were not held in the same regard as the members of the Church of England. On July 7, 1684, at the age of 21, he signed an indenture document to serve John Bright; Merchant of London for 4 years on arrival in the Colonies. He boarded the GOOTH and signed documents presented by the ship's master; Peter Pagan and witnessed by Joseph Pycraft. In April 1690, Richard Kennon received land from the Henrico Co. Court, Virginia as payment for bringing in emigrants to the Colonies. One of the names on Kennon's list is Bart. Stowell (1684). [Fom the Stovall Society]
