      Robert Alexander

      Birth: 1633 ?? 1633? or 1666?
Death: 1 Jun 1704 (aged 70–71) Stafford County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Alexander Cemetery, King George, King George County, Virginia, USA
      Memorial #: 130424801

Bio: Robert Alexander (1633-1704) was the son of John Alexander and Catherine (Graham) Alexander. In October of 1659 when he was about 26 years old, his father filed the paperwork to establish a plantation named Caledon. Robert Alexander inherited the plantation in 1677, after his father passed away. A book entitled the "Annals of Alexandria" noted that Robert Alexander also inherited the upper part of the Howson Patent tract from his father, and left it to his two young sons named Robert and Charles in 1704.Robert Alexander's brother named Philip Alexander, inherited the lower part of the Howson Patent tract. Philip Alexander had two sons, named Robert and Philip. Sixty acres of the lower part of the Howson Patent land were used about 70 years later, to found the city of Alexandria in July of 1749. The land grant for the city of Alexandria, was made by Captain Philip Alexander (1704-1753) and his cousin John Alexander (1711-1763).

      ***PLANTATION HISTORY
The Caledon Plantation house had a lovely view of the Potomac River. The outline of the foundation of the plantation house, is within view of the family cemetery. The plantation might have been informally established as early as 1653, when Robert Alexander's father immigrated to Virginia. The plantation's cemetery was said to have been founded by 1657. The plantation was formally established by 1659, under the name of Caledon Plantation. "Caledonia" was the Latin word used by the Roman Empire to describe the Scottish Highlands, and its people were called "Caledonii" or Picts. Around 1700, Robert Alexander renamed the Caledon Plantation, and called it Salisbury. The county name changed several times, over the years. The plantation site was originally located in Westmoreland County, of the Virginia Colony. In 1664 the same area became part of Stafford County. By 1777 King George County had taken on its modern boundaries, to include the Salisbury Plantation. The plantation fell within the boundaries of St. Paul's Parish, of the Episcopalian Church. The river which was nearby was originally called the Patowmeck River, but it is now known as the Potomac River. The plantation was protected by a small promontory of land jutting out into the river, which gave it shelter from storms coming in off the Chesapeake Bay or the Atlantic Ocean. The promontory appears to have been located east of "PoPt Cr" on the attached map of 1670. "PoPt Cr" might have been an abbreviation for Pope Point Creek.***CEMETERY HISTORY
The Alexander Cemetery is located at one of the earliest settlements for any Alexander family in America. Three cemetery surveys can be found online for it. 1) WPA SURVEY OF 1937A cemetery survey conducted in 1937 listed only three gravestones:

***A SPECIAL THANK YOU GOES TO...A special thank you goes to Richard Parker, for adding this cemetery to FindAGrave.com. A word of appreciation is also due to J. Benjamin Chrismond for traveling to the cemetery, taking photos, and documenting its status.
***CURRENT STATUS OF CEMETERY AND PLANTATIONAs of 1903, only three grave markers were visible in this cemetery -- Captain Philip Alexander (1704-1753), his wife named Sarah (Hooe) Alexander, and their young son named Philip Alexander. Many colonial era graves in America were marked with simple field stones. The field stones were often not inscribed, or they were inscribed only with initials and the year of death. The inscriptions on many colonial era gravestones have now faded and worn away. The Salisbury Plantation was sold outside of the Alexander family, after all of the family members who lived there had either passed on, or moved away. The sale of the property was said to have occurred many years before the Civil War began in 1861. Eventually the colonial era house fell into a state of disrepair, and was abandoned entirely. In 1962, a manuscript written by Hugh Roy Stuart reported that five generations of Alexanders were interred at the Alexander Cemetery at the Salisbury Plantation. In 1974, a large portion of the land of the Salisbury Plantation was graciously donated to the state of Virginia, in order that it could become part of Caledon State Park. The land now provides sanctuary and habitat for bald eagles. The remains of the Alexander Cemetery, are now part of a privately owned farm.
