James Collie left the Garmouth area prior to 2/21/1751 when he first appears in the records of Stafford Co, VA
By early 1766 he and his family were living in Pittsylvania Co, VA
The last known record for James Collie in Pittsylvania Co, Va was his listing in a 1782 tax record as the head of household containing 9 white people and no slaves. He was listed as "James Colley, senr" , with the "Senior" either added to distinguish him from his 18-19 yr old son, James Jr or to acknowledge his status as an older person. This point becomes important in establishing his approximate death year, in that the next known tax record of Pittsylvania Co, VA, for the year 1785, records only "James Colley" (not as a "Senior"), with only 5 white household members. Because James Collie (II) by then was over 21 years old (though as yet unmarried), the 1785 record would be viewed as evidence that James Collie, "Senr", the Scottish immigrant, was deceased, and his son was now head of the remaining, but smaller, household. If so, then James Collie, the immigrant, would have died between 1782 and 1785.

Following the 1775 survey, the only known deed for James Collieone which also mentions
his wife Annis dated April 11, 1781. By this time, James was 62 years old and Ann
was in her mid-50s. The deed was one whereby Hankerson Ashby, the son and heir of Thomas
Ashby, deceased, gave James Collie and his wife a life interest to 330 acres of land on the
branches of Sandy Creek of Dan River in the southern part of Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
The deed (DB 6, pp. 141-142) recites that the land was part of a larger tract being sold to John
Waller, with Hankerson Ashby reserving out:
...about the half of the above said track at the low end for James Collie
and Ann Collie his Wife, there [their] lives to use the Land and what belongs
to the above said part of the Land as shall sum [seem] good to Father
[either] of the said James & Ann Collie and at their Deaths to return to
John Waller as his property and the above said John Waller doth here unto
agree the above is signed and delivered before these witnesses [William
Booker, Daniel Everett, Humphrey Hendrick, & John Stamps] ...signed:
Hankerson Ashby & John Waller [with Waller signing by a mark]
It is unclear what brought about this arrangement. It might have been to resolve a legal
issue of conflicting claims by the Ashby family to some of James Collie's land including wJiere
he lived. Or, it may have been a different but nearby tract involving some type of gift arrangement
for reasons now unknown. In any case, the Collies presumably did live on this
tract, and it likely was the location of James Collie's death in the 1780s. How that was estimated
is discussed later.

Bio:
James Collie(I) was born in the highlands of Scotland and took passage to the American Colonies sometime prior to 1750. He and his spouse, lived in the colony of Virginia. One known son, William Silas Collie (I), was born there in 1753. There were likely other children. James lived at a time of great unrest and discontent over the harsh treatment and taxation of the mother country, England. He did not live to see a son go off to war, a free country created or that son join pioneers in taming a distant wilderness that someday would be called Tennessee.
