News Clipping from the Dawson Springs Progress, Dawson Springs, Kentucky, 16 March 1943
James Harvey Wilkey, father of Mrs. Arch A. Purdy and James Clyde Wilkey of this city, was laid to rest last week in Beulah cemetery.
Mr. Wilkey has spent his entire life in Beulah, where he was a large land owner, and had reared to womanhood and manhood one of the largest families in Hopkins County, the members of whom all survive, and were present at the services.
Mr. Wilkey served as Master of Beulah Lodge and for a great many years as secretary.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilkey celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary about seven years ago and since that time the family has each year held a reunion, with relatives and and friends coming from several states.
Besides the eleven children of his own, he reared Morton C. Hibbs, a grandchild, practically reared Austin and Iva Franklin, children of Richard Franklin, who also spent most of his years, and died, in the home of Mr. Wilkey. Squire John Riley Franklin and his wife, Mary Ann Bishop McGregor Franklin, his father-in-law and mother-in-law lived in his home as members of his family from the time of his marriage until their death. There were a number of years when this household consisted of sixteen and seventeen members.
Besides the widow, children and grandchildren, he is survived by four great-grandchildren.
The crowd and floral offerings were one of the largest to ever attend a funeral in this section.
Many tributes were paid the deceased but none would have been appreciated more by him than that tribute paid to him by "Old Finis", colored, who worked several years for him. Upon learning of his friend's death at 11 O'clock, "Old Finis," who now lived resides in at Providence, Ky., seventeen miles away, walked the seventeen miles to be with his dear friend before he was laid to rest at 2 o'clock. A great tribute to any man.
