Notes for John Wesley Crockett DERRYBERRY
---------------------------------------------------------
Based on the fact that his brother William Jordan is buried in Maple Springs Cemetery, the J.W.C. in the transcribed
record below is most likely the John W. Derryberry found in the 1850 census (see his father's notes for details). The
birth date is also consistent with the 1850 census.
Maple Springs Cemetery, Madison Co., TN:
Derryberry, J. W. C., 1830-1911
Derryberry, Sarah C., 1841-1931, "His wife"
He is probably the "J. H. C. Derryberry" age 30 living with his uncle Jesse R. in Jackson Co., MS in the 1860 census
(see Jesse's notes for details). On 24 May 1861, J. W. C. was paid $15 for ten days services as Army store keeper in
the month of April, received at Jackson, MS.

TN Confederate Pension Applications:
J.W.C. Derryberry, widow Sarah C., pension #W4495, Madison Co.
He is probably the following entry in Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database: John Derryberry, Confederate, 2nd
Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry. This regiment was organized in Hinds Co., near Simpson Co. where J. W. C. was living in
1869 and not near the other Derryberrys in the Tishomingo/Tippah/Alcorn/Itawamba area.
Transcribed records of Maple Springs Cemetery, Madison Co., TN:
DERRYBERRY, John Wesley (7 Mar 1830 - 2 AUg 1911), h/o Sarah Catherine Magee, s/o Michael & Ruth (Doss) Derryberry.
DERRYBERRY, Sarah (Magee) (27 Aug 1841 - 15 Nov 1931), w/o David Clark and John Wesley Derryberry, d/o Willis & Mary
(Norwood) Magee.
That the initial "C." stood for "Crockett" comes from a biography of his granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Williams, in
"Hardeman County, Tennessee: Family History" (Turner Publishing Co. 2001), where she gives the full names of her
grandparents. (See J. W. C.'s daughter Hattie Elizabeth's notes for details.) "John Wesley Crockett" was the name
that fellow Tennessean Davy Crockett (still alive in 1830 when J. W. C. Derryberry was born) gave to his own son, born
in 1807.
