      Humphrey de Bohun

      Birth: 1208
      Herefordshire, England
      Death: Sep. 24, 1275
      Warwickshire, England

      2nd Earl Of Hereford, 1st Earl of Essex, Constable of England, Constable of Dover Castle, Sheriff of Kent. Baron of Pleshy, Essex.

      Son of Henry de Bohun and Maud de Mandeville, Countess of Essex, daughter of Geoffrey FitzPeter. Grandson of Humphrey III de Bohun and Margaret de Huntington descendant of King David I of Scotland.

      Husband of Maud de Eu Lusignan, daughter of Ralph de Exoudun and Alice d'Eu, the grand daughter of Geoffrey de Plantagenet. They had four sons and four daughters:
      * Sir Humphrey de Bohun V
      * Henry
      * Geoffrey
      * Ralph, cleric
      * Maud, wife of Anselm Marshall, 9th Earl of Pembroke and Roger de Quincy
      * Alice, wife of Roger de Toni
      * Eleanor, wife of John de Verdun
      * Unknown daughter

      Humphrey fought in France in 1230, 1242 and 1253, then in Wales in 1257. He was the Marshal of the Household for the coronation of Queen Eleanor in 1236, then succeeded his mother as the Earl of Essex later that year. He went on a pilgrimage to Spain in 1237, and to the Holy Lands in 1250. Maud died 14 Aug 1241, buried at Llanthony Abbey.

      Humphrey was one of nine godfathers in 1239 for Edward, the Kings eldest son. In 1253 he founded the church of the Fryers Augustines on Broad Street in London. He was one of the writers of the Provisions of Oxford in 1258.

      Secondly Humphrey married Maud Avenbury, and produced two sons; John and Sir Miles. He took sides with the King and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lewes, 14 May 1264.

      Maud died on 08 Oct 1273 at Sorges, Gascony, where she was buried.

      Humphrey died in Warwickshire and was buried at Llanthony before the high altar. Maud's son, John, had her moved to be with her husband in 1290.

      Depending on the source, he is considered to be Humphrey IV, the 2nd or 6th Earl of Hereford, his father is considered the 1st or 5th.
