Humphrey fought in France in 1230, 1242 and 1253, then in Wales in 1257. He was the Marshal of the Household for the coronation of Queen Eleanor in 1236, then succeeded his mother as the Earl of Essex later that year. He went on a pilgrimage to Spain in 1237, and to the Holy Lands in 1250. Maud died 14 Aug 1241, buried at Llanthony Abbey.
Humphrey was one of nine godfathers in 1239 for Edward, the Kings eldest son. In 1253 he founded the church of the Fryers Augustines on Broad Street in London. He was one of the writers of the Provisions of Oxford in 1258.
Secondly Humphrey married Maud Avenbury, and produced two sons; John and Sir Miles. He took sides with the King and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lewes, 14 May 1264.
Maud died on 08 Oct 1273 at Sorges, Gascony, where she was buried.
Humphrey died in Warwickshire and was buried at Llanthony before the high altar. Maud's son, John, had her moved to be with her husband in 1290.
