Mary Fitzgerald Noe
Birth: 1804
Death: 1 Dec 1867 (aged 6263)
Burial: Pine Springs Cemetery, Sulligent, Lamar County, Alabama, USA
Memorial #: 41249008
Bio:
This is the story about Thomas R. Noe and Mary Fitzgerald Noe that was sent to me by one of their descendants: "On December 1, 1867, Thomas R and Mary Noe were murdered in their Pine Springs Community home, along with a Dr. DeGraffenreid who had come to their home to tend a sick grandson. A man named Briggs had recently been released from the asylum and had been allowed to stay overnight in an out building. The grandson had been frightened of the man and had crawled beneath his bed when when he heard Briggs enter the house. When the black man who worked for the Noes came the next morning to light the lamps and start the fire to prepare breakfast, he found the bodies of Robert and Mary Noe and the doctor. The young boy crawled from beneath the bed, and he and the hired man ran to report the murders to the authorities. Briggs was captured, hiding in the loft of a barn and led authorities to where he had hidden the murder weapon, an axe handle that had been drying near the fire . . . The murder of the Noes is common knowledge not only among Noe decendants in Lamar County but among many residents in the community. The double headstone in the Pine Springs Cemetary north of Sulligent, Lamar County, with the same date of death for Thomas R and May Noe, stands as a silent testimonial to this tragic event. At one time the murder weapon was in the Sulligent Museum but later was sold at an auction to a Noe relative."--email from Judy Clonts
