Note:
From LaVelda Faull - e-mail 4/13/99:
Another theory:
William Hawks was born ca 1750 in Virginia, probably Amelia . I believe he was the son of Abraham and Lucy Hawks of Amelia . I'll go into all of that later. Also, I'll give you info on the Hawks in NC and SC that I have. Anyway to begin with, I don't have very good dates on William Hawks Sr.'s children. William Hawks married Rebecca Laffoon, daughter of Matthew and Mary (___) Laffoon Sr. probably ca 1775 in Brunswick or Lunenberg Counties, Virginia. There is proof in court records that she was the daughter of Matthew Laffoon. William Hawks was in Patrick, Virginia, Surry, NC, and Greenville and Pendleton, SC before moving to Green, Kentucky.
William Hawks, Sr. died in 1814 in Green, Kentucky (Inventory Will Book 2, p 60-1 dated July 1814), Administratrix was widow Rebecca Hawks. Rebecca was born ca 1755-60 in Brunswick, VA and died ca 1818-20 in Green, Kentucky.
William and Rebecca (Laffoon) Hawks Sr. had the following children:
1. Joseph Hawks - Born before 1775 (per the 1820 Green, KY census). I know very little about Joseph.
2. George Hawks, Sr. - Born between 1784-94; married 28 Feb 1806 in Green Co, KY to Jemima Dobson.
3. William W. Hawks, Jr. - Born 1784-90; Married 1)Betsy Lewis on 28 Oct 1811 Green, KY, daughter of Edward Lewis, Bondsman: Matthew Laffoon; Married 2) 1 March 1838 Green, KY to Charity Bybee; Died 15 Jan 1844 in Green, KY (Estate appraised Order Book 9 p 406 Green, KY).
FROM LAVELDA FAULL 4/13/99:
Before I get into all of the information on William Hawks, Sr., I'll start with data from deeds and court records in Green, KY on his children. So here goes some documentation (I abstracted all of this myself from the originals in the courthouse).
1810 GREEN CO KY CENSUS
William Hawks 1 male 45 plus; 2 females under 10; 2 females 16-26; 1 female 26-45; 1 female 45 plus (Note: the sons were out on their own by this time)
Roll No. 6 Page 256
Green KY Deed Book 4 p 258
4 April 1805. William Hawks to William Green and Eliza his wife, for 75 lbs, 156 acres Goldsby Davis northwest corner in the Barrens which is a corner also for Jacob Bale, then due west course with a line already made to William Mumford, then northwardly to a corner made on Mumford's line for William Matthews, Jr., eastwardly with said line to Jacob Bale in the Barrens. No acknowledgement. No recording date.
Green KY Deed Book 6 p 250
3 Nov 1811. William Hawks to George Hawks, 75 lbs, 156 acres in Green Co (same land description as above deed).
It would appear that William Green and Eliza his wife did not buy the land after all? Or did they sell it back to William?
Green, KY Deed book 5 p 110.
22 July 1811. William Hawks came into court and resigned his office of constable. George Hawks is appointed constable whereupon he together with Joseph Dobson and Edward Lewis his securities executed and acknowledged bond as the law directs and the said George Hawks has the proper oaths administered to him.
