Regarding the Aquilla and Elizabeth Barton of Madison County, TN by way
of Caswell County, NC, does anyone know what that Elizabeth's maiden name
was? Did they also have a son named Aquilla--none is listed below in
the original message? Could they be the Aquilla (b. abt 1752 in
Virginia) and Elizabeth (ELLIS) Barton (b. abt 1777 in Virginia)? Since
Caswell County, NC borders on Virginia, it is plausible that this Aquilla
and Elizabeth could have lived there. However, I doubt if this Aquilla
was part of the Lewis Barton clan, documented in the book Baltimore
County Families, 1659-1759, that migrated from Baltimore County, MD to
Caswell County, NC in the late 1700s since there is no reference to an ********
Aquilla in the book.
I say all that to say this. My family has an Aquilla (b. before 1790, d.
?, m. 10 Feb 1813) and Elizabeth (KENNEBREW) Barton (b. before 1800, d.
?) also associated with Caswell County, NC. However, we have no
indication that they ever lived in Tennessee. They had a son also named
Aquilla (b. 10 Jan 1815, m. 20 Jan 1842, d. 29 Dec. 1897) who married
Sarah "Sallie" (Henslee) Barton (b. 15 Oct 1818, d. 15 Dec 1897) in
Caswell County, NC.
Aquilla and Sarah Barton came to the Missouri Ozarks in the late 1840s
and are both buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Webster County, MO.
The senior Aquilla Barton's name is listed on a commemorative stone at
the small Compton Family Cemetery in Webster County, MO. (The Comptons
were also from Caswell County, NC). We have assumed that the senior
Aquilla and Elizabeth came to the Missouri Ozarks in the late 1840s with
the younger Aquilla and Sarah Barton, but we have no hard evidence.
Neither are they listed in the 1850 Webster County, MO census which also
leaves a question mark.
Thanks for any input that would help resolve my questions/concerns re.
the two Aquilla and Elizabeth Barton families.
