ROBERT BICKERS (G4/N2)
4TH GENERATION
Virginia-Kentucky-Tennessee ca1827-1859
m. Isabella Thompson 1820-1904
Son of Benjamin Carty Bickers (G3/N2) & Joanna Martin VA-KY-TN ca1782-1847
Grandson of Nicholas Bickers (G2/R1) & Jane Carty VA 1744-1836
Great-grandson of Robert Bickers (G1) & Elizabeth VA ca1709-1808
Draft - As of 06 June 2003
Robert Bickers (G4/N2) was born about 1827 in Orange County, Virginia, and was murdered at his lumber operation in July1859 in Phillips County, Arkansas, by a man who had been fired the previous day. The Last Will & Testament of Robert Bickers [1*], 1859, is indexed at Rec G, p.186, Phillips Co, AR
Robert Bickers married Isabella Thompson [2*], Madison Co, TN. Issued 01 Nov1847 by Thomas W. Gamewell, Clerk. Witness: Robert and William Bickers. Solemnized 18 Nov 1847. JP: H. Barrier, witnessed by Wm. Bickers. Robert married Isabella Thompson about the same time that an Administrator was being named for Benjamin Carty Bickers' estate. Isabella Thompson was born on 03 September 1820 [1830 - JHM] and died on 06 December 1904. She was 69 years of age at the time of the 1900 Census. She was buried in the Holmes Cemetery in Ripley, Lauderdale County, Tennessee.
According to the biography written by his nephew, James Madison Bickers (G5/N2):
The said Benjamin Bickers raised a family of 8 boys and 3 girls. His sons' names were Robert, Lewis Alexander, Benjamin [R], William [H], Henry [C], [Joel] Anderson, Horace [E], and Jefferson [R] Bickers. Robert Bickers was killed before the war in Phillips County, Arkansas, while overseeing nigros*. He married Iby Thompson, a sister to my mother. They had 3 children, 2 boys and a girl. Their names were Benjamin Allen, William Henry, and Martha Bickers, all dead except William Henry Bickers, who lives at Ripley, Tennessee. Horace Bickers was a preacher and he died, I think, in Arkansas. Jefferson Bickers was killed in the war at Corinth, Mississippi. "...my father, Lewis Alexander Bickers, married Susan Thompson, a daughter of Allen Thompson, a Baptist preacher who lived at that time 2½ miles West of Medon Station now on the railroad...It was when Grant was making the second attack on Vicksburg...".
Benjamin Carty Bickers moved his family to Kentucky and visited years with his brother, Joel Bickers, in Mercer County, Kentucky. Some of the Thompson family may [have - JHM] moved to Tennessee at the same time that Benjamin's family went to Tennessee, because one of Joel's sons also married an Isabella Thompson and named a daughter Susan'. Many families were so close to one another that they named children alike, thus identifying themselves with one another. The Thompsons and the Bickers were on neighboring property in Madison County, Tennessee.
The 1850 Census for Madison County, Tennessee, enumerates Robert Bickers, 22, born in Virginia, a farmer, his wife, Isabella Bickers, age 20, born in Kentucky, and their 1-month old daughter, Mary.
According to the '1860 Mortality Schedule, AR; 1974', Robert Biggers, 35, married, b.VA, died July 1859, murdered sudden, Phillips Co, AR.; and his Estate is listed [3*]: Robert Bickers, 1859, Rec G, p.186, Phillips Co, AR.
Further from the biography compiled by James Madison Bickers (G5/N2):
When we arrived at our grandfather Thompson's we found there 3 other orphan children at grandfather's house, they were the sons and daughter of Uncle Robert Bickers who was killed by a nigre in Arkansas. This increased my grandfather Thompson to 6 orphan children, which made a great burden on my grandfather and grandmother for they was both old and feeble and my grandfather was nearly blind and he had a blind daughter, Aunt Ally [Alice] Thompson, who was then 50 years old and had been blind all her life, but Aunt Ally did not live but a few months after we got there. Aunt Ally was a good woman and as I write this I can see in my mind tonight that good blind aunt of mine going around that old place and doing things that looks to me now unreasonable for a blind person to do. My grandfather managed to take care of us 6 orphan children very well considering the war times. Both northern and southern armys were at that time making raids in West Tennessee and it was hard on anyone to make anything and keep it.
At the 1850 Census for Madison County, Isabella's father, Allen Thompson, was a Baptist Minister, age 53; her mother, Sarah, was 57, their children:
Ally (Alice) Thompson, white female, 24, b.KY, blind, dau
Lee Thompson (1860 own family), white male, 18, b.TN, farmer, son
Cynthia Thompson, white female, 14, b.TN, son
Allen M. Thompson, white male, 12, b.TN, son
Mary W. Thompson, white female, 10, b.TN, son
This was the family to which Isabella, now a widow, returned when her husband, Robert, died in 1859. Allen Thompson was 64, a farmer, b.SC; Sarah was 62, SC; and Alice, their daughter, 32, b.TN, and blind, and now Isabella with the orphans of Robert:
1860 TN Census of Madison County:
Isabella Bickers, white female, Widow, 27, b.KY
Benjamin Allen Bickers, white male, 7, b.TN, grandson
Martha Bickers, white female, 5, b.TN, granddaughter
William [H] Bickers, white male, 2, b.AR, grandson
This was also the family unit which James Madison Bickers joined when his father, Lewis Alexander (brother of Robert Bickers) went to war. His mother, Susan Thompson Bickers, who had died, was the sister of Isabella. From his history: ...When we arrived at our grandfather Thompson's we found there 3 other orphan children at grandfather's house, they were the sons and daughter of Uncle Robert Bickers who was killed by a nigre in Arkansas. This increased my grandfather Thompson to 6 orphan children, which made a great burden on my grandfather and grandmother for they was both old and feeble and my grandfather was nearly blind and he had a blind daughter, Aunt Ally Thompson, who was then 50 years old and had been blind all her life, but Aunt Ally did not live but a few months after we got there. I was 14 years old then...In the year 1870, I and cousin William Thompson moved to Obion County, Tennessee...
Research shows that Lewis Alexander Bickers, now home from the war, married Lucinda Leathers in Obion County. This is not mentioned in the history written by his son, James Madison Bickers. Can it then be assumed that when he and his cousin, William Thompson moved to Obion County, that he was joining his father?
Letter from H.A. Bickers in Mercer, Tennessee, to Joseph Edward Bickers in Westfield, New Jersey, dated 14 May 1940: Dear Sir: My father, William Henry Bickers, the son of Robert Bickers, was a descendant of the Virginia Bickers. I do not know how close up...I was reared at Ripley, TN. My father died 1937. My brothers, Robert T., Ben A., Jesse H., and Oscar live at Ripley, TN. I am married, have a daughter in college, two sons 18 and 15. I am college and seminary trained and ordained Baptist preacher. Yours, H.A. Bickers"
