Roger de Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, was the son of Edmund Mortimer and Margaret de Fiennes. He was an English nobleman and was for three years de facto ruler of England. He lead a successful rebellion against Edward II. Mortimer was also the lover of Edward II's wife, Isabella of France, who assisted him in the deposition and allegedly, the murder of her husband. A few days before young Edward's eighteenth birthday, both Mortimer and Isabella were seized by Edward and his companions from inside Nottingham Castle. In spite of Isabella's entreaty to her son, "Fair son, have pity on the gentle Mortimer," Mortimer was conveyed to the Tower. After being accused of assuming royal power and other crimes, Mortimer was executed by hanging at Tyburn.
Roger married Joan de Geneville ,the wealthy daughter of Sir Piers de Geneville, of Trim Castle and Ludlow, in 1301, and immediately began a family. One being their heir Edmund
After Rogers death Joan petitioned Edward III for the return of her husband's body so she could bury it at Wigmore Abbey. Mortimers lover, Isabella, had buried his body at Greyfriars, Coventry following his hanging. Edward III replied, "Let his body rest in peace." The King later relented, and Mortimers body was transferred to Wigmore Abbey, where Joan was later buried beside him.
This memorial is an cenotaph for Roger Mortimer, his original burial place is Greyfriars
