Prof. Leman H. Stringer, 81, head of the Milton College School of Music for 37 years, died at 10 a.m. Monday, April 13, in his home on R. 1, Milton Junction.
Funeral services were to be held today, Thursday, April 16, at 2 p.m. in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church, the Rev. Elmo F. Randolph officiating. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery.
Lehman H. Stringer, son of William M. and Mary Kelly Stringer, was born Oct. 2, 1882, in Pulaski, Ill. He attended Milton Academy and Milton College, graduating in 1909, and then studied voice and speech in Chicago.
After teaching in the West Allis high school he returned to Milton College in 1912 as head of the school of music and dramatic art, a post he held until his retirement in 1949.
In the field of music he carried on the tradition of the Choral Union's annual Shakespearean plays from 1913 until 1948 except during World War I. He was for many years director of the First Congregational choir in Janesville and until 1962 was director of the choir in his own church, the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church. He was a leading member of the Milton and Milton Junction Kiwanis Club.
He was married to Ruth Zinn of Farina, Ill., in June, 1911. Mr. and Mrs. Stringer celebrated their golden wedding during Commencement in June, 1961, when many of their friends and Mr. Stringer's former students returned to greet them.
Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Boyden L. (Mary) Crouch of Phoenix, Ariz., and one grandson, Robert.
Preceding him in death was a son, William, who died at the age of 11.
