Earl of Carrick, 6th Chief Butler of Ireland
Edmund was the second son of Theobald Butler, 4th Chief Butler of Ireland and Joan FitzJohn, grandson of Theobald Butler and Margery de Burgh, John FitzGeoffrey and Isobel Bigod.
Husband of Joan FitxGerald, the daughter of John FitzGerlad. They had five children:
James Butler, 1st Earl Ormond
John Butler of Clonamickton
Lawrence Butler
Joan Butler, wife of Roger Mortimer
Unknown daughter, wife of Sir Thomas Dillon
Edmund succeeded to his title and lands upon the death of his elder brother Theobald, the 5th Chief Butler of Ireland, in 1299. He was created Justiciar of Ireland in 1303 with a annual salary of £500. Edmund was knighted by King Edward II in 1309, and defeated the O'Byrne and O'Toole clans in Glenmalure in 1312. On Sunday, the 29th of September 1313, Edmund held a great feast where he created thirty knights by patent dated at Langley on 04 January 1314.
Having proved himself during the Bruce campaign in Ireland, Edmund was granted the castle and manor of Karryk Macgryffin and Roscrea, the patent was dated at Lincoln 1 September 1315. On 12 November 1320, all the lands of William de Carran in Finagh and Favmolin in County Waterford were also awarded to Edmund. The charter failed to mention Edmund's son, James, as Earl of Carrick, and James was later created Earl of Ormond in 1328 at the same time Roger Mortimer was made Earl of March.
Edmund went on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1321 but died in London on 13th September 1321, and buried at Gowran, County Kilkenny.
