Bio:
William was the son of William R. & Harriet Amanda (Provine) Barton. ****
His sisters were Elizabeth Jane "Lizzie" & Mary.
In 1870 he lived with his Uncle John & worked as a farmhand on his farm. He later became a school teacher. In 1885, when he was 32, he graduated from University of Nashville Medical School in Davidson Co, TN.
He moved to Newport, TX on the Clay-Jack county line. On Nov. 3, 1887, he married Mary R McDaniel in Jack Co, TX. He was 34 years old, & she was 18. She died the following year on May 30, 1888.
On Oct. 30, 1890, he married Alice Elinza Bird in Jack Co, TX. He was 37, & she was 24. They lived in Newport, where he worked as a physician & druggist. They were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Newport.
Alice gave birth to six children from 1892 - 1906: Myrtle Lourena, William P., Gladys B., Hazel, Earle, & Vivian.
Some time after 1900 the family moved to Bellevue because it was a larger town. William ran the Barton pharmacy with his wife's step-father, William C. Hood.
in April 1906, a cyclone/tornado) destroyed Bellevue, which included William's drugstore & their home. Typhoid fever swept through the town as an aftermath. Their 12 year old son, William, died from the disease. Dr. Barton was devastated, & his practice & business never fully recovered. The house was rebuilt on the north side of the railroad tracks that run through town.
William retired from his business & practice at age 64 after his partner died.
