7th Tennessee Calvary, Co D, private, enlisted for one year in Carroll County, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 22 (born 7/16/1840 to Isaac and Susan Page Birdwell of Carroll Co, TN). He brought his own horse and equipment. Nothing else is in his muster roll. Birdwell applied for and received an invalid pension in 1891. He also filled out a Civil War Questionnaire in the early 1900s. In it he says his parents were dead when the war began, that they had no slaves, that the battle of Lexington, TN was his only battle and that he was discharged at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. He married three times. The first two were Ann Butler and Mary Elizabeth ?. His 3rd wife, Dona Dickerson, applied for a widow's pension, in December 1924 after Birdwell died at Buena Vista, TN on 11/20/24.

7th Tennessee Calvary, private, Co I, enlisted for 3 years in Carroll Co, TN on 9/15/62 and mustered at Union City, TN on 12/15/63 at about age 17 (b. 1/29/46). He furnished his own horse and equipment. Butler was in the hospital in May and June of 1864 which means he was not captured at Union City, TN with the regiment and did not go to Andersonville Prison. He was "classified as deserted," however. After the war he moved to Montgomery Co, IL. where he applied for a pension in 1929 but it was denied. He was, however, discharged honorably by a special act of the 70th US Congress. Butler died on 4/2/1929 and is buried in the Casey Cemetery, Fillmore Township, Montgomery Co, IL. His second wife was Louisa McCaslin Butler. His parents appear to have been William Solomon and Temperance McCord Butler.
