(1809-1882) Renowned Baptist minister in early Texas history; president from 1861 to 1863 of Baylor University (which included what is now Mary-Hardin-Baylor College); great-grandfather of Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th president of the United States. Born in North Carolina and reared without formal schooling on a farm, Baines worked his way through the University of Alabama. When licensed to preach at age 25 he became the third generation of his family to enter the ministry. Moved to Texas in 1850. Here his reputation as a wise and peace-loving clergyman continued to grow. He held offices in the Baptist State Convention and founded the Pioneer "Texas Baptist" newspaper, in 1855. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he accepted the presidency of strife-ridden Baylor University (at Independence) and guided it for two crucial years. Although plagued constantly by ill health, Baines was noted for his stamina. Parishioners also admired his marksmanship as well as his learning. In 1867 he moved to Salado. Preaching and working for Baptist education, he lived there until his death of malarial fever. He is buried in Salado. Twice married, Baines had ten children. (Info from Texas Historical Marker)

When a federal unit formed at Huntingdon during the Civil War (7th Tenness ee Cavalry), Alexander joint it and rose to the rank of Corporal in C o. B. According to records, the 7th Cavalry was one of the most unlucky, if not outright incompetent units to fight (the latter perhaps because of poor leadership. After various misadventures, a large part of this unit was captured and some of the men were sent to the infamous Andersonville Prison Camp. The remainder reformed in Kentucky and were assign ed guard duty to keep them out of trouble. Alexander seems to have been among those who went to Andersonville. After the war he received a pension because he was afflicted with pellagra, a disease caused by severe vita min deficiency. He made his living as a farmer in the Dollar community, b ut occasionally peddled medicine in Huntingdon. (notes from R.Allen's webp age)

      Alexander T. Butler's Bio:

7th Tennessee Calvary, Companies A, B & I, corporal, enlisted for 3 years in Buena Vista, Carroll Co, TN on 8/10/62 and mustered in Benton Co, TN or Huntingdon, TN on 8/17/62 at age 30/32/37 (b. 10/10/1827).

Butler furnished his own horse and equipment. He was appointed corporal on 8/18/62. He was one of the 100 or more members of the detachment of the 7th Tennessee stationed at forts along the Tennessee/Mississippi border who went AWOL in June 1863. He either returned to the unit or was captured while AWOL. Butler spent time in Andersonville Prison in Georgia and was exchanged through Savannah, GA in the November/December 1864 exchanges.

He mustered out on 6/28/65 due to disability. He was given transportation from Louisville, KY to Buena Vista, TN. which probably means he spent time in the Jeffersonville, IN hospital because of the scrobutus he contracted in prison. Married to Elizabeth Smith in 1846, it was their son Littlefield who is mentioned in the hospital record as a contact relative.

In 1887 Butler was a member of the Isaac R Hawkins Post #58 of the GAR and gave his occupation as farmer. He applied for an invalid pension in 1889 and is buried in the Humble Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker.

His wife received a widow's pension.

      Alexander Butler
Carroll County Democrat, June 27 1902
      A.T. Butler Dead
After a Long Illness and Much Suffering, He Passes Away
A.T. Butler died at his home in Huntington last Wednesday afternoon about 6 o’clock. Mr. Butler had been sick with some chronic ailment for a long time, and his death had been expected for several days.
“Uncle Alec,” as he was familiarly called, was about 75 years old, a member of the Baptist church, and a christian man useful in his day. He has many friends and relatives in the county who will regret his death and sympathize with his wife and children in their loss.
The burial occurred yesterday at the Humble burying ground after funeral services led by Eld.s Marshall and Newsome Joyner.

The 1880 Burnet County, Texas census shows Dellamore B. Cargile, 25, single, working as a farm laborer and his brother John W. Cargile, 30, single, also working as a farm laborer. The brothers were boarding with the Daniel Eldridge family.

Delemore married Amy E. Butler on July 22, 1881, in Stephens County, Texas. Amy Butler was born June 8, 1862, in Texas, the daughter of John Quincy Adams Butler and Elizabeth Standlee.

John Quincy Butler was born February 9, 1831, in Carroll County, Tennessee and died in 1916, in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. He served as a private in the 30th Confederate Texas Cavalry in the Civil War. A Confederate headstone marks his gravesite in the Franks Cemetery at Fittstown, Oklahoma. Elizabeth Standlee was born March 20, 1830, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and died June 7, 1895 in Fittstown, OK. She is buried in Franks Cemetery. Their children included: (1) Reuben Butler, b. abt 1851, AR; (2) Susan A. Butler, b. abt 1854, AR; (3) Nelly Butler, b. abt 1856, AR; (4) Tempy C. Butler, b. abt 1859, TX; (5) Amy E. Butler, b. 1862, TX; (6) John Butler, b. abt 1866, AR and (7) Wilson D. Butler, b. 1869, AR.

Delemore and Amy moved to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) prior to 1892, possibly to be near her parents who were living in Indian Territory at that time. Two of their children were born in Indian Territory/Oklahoma - one in September 1892 and one in August 1895.

It appears that Delemore and Amy moved their family to Florida, where they lived from about 1896 until late 1899, at which time they moved back to Texas. Their move to Florida may have been about the time Delemore began preaching.

      Karen,
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with DNA tests that match Elkin(s)---but here is the Elkin(s) tie that I have on my Boren/Standlee tree. John and Susan Boren Standlee had a daughter whom they named Elizabeth. She was born in 1830 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas (I think these people traveled between Eureka Springs and Berryville quite freely). She died in 1875 in Pontoco, Oklahoma. She married John Quincy Adams Butler (1831-1916). (He was a brother to Nathaniel Cornelius Neely Butler whose daughter Melissa Ann married George Washington Baines---Melissa and G. W. being the great-grandparents of Lyndon Baines Johnson.) John Quincy Adams Butler and Elizabeth Standlee Butler had a daughter named Tennessee Catherine Butler. She was born in 1859 in Lampasas, Texas---died in 1908 in Murry, Oklahoma. (The Butlers were on the Boren wagon train to Bell/Lampasa, Texas, abt. 1856---Isaac Boren Sr. being the wagon train leader and the husband of Mary Belle Queen Cave Boren. Mary Belle's mother was a Butler---a sister to John Quincy Adams Butler and Nathaniel Cornelius Butler.). Tennessee Catherine Butler married Benjamin Thomas Elkins (1851-1908). They had a lot of children. Among them was a Joseph Tom Elkin (1896-1905) and John Eleck Elkin (1881-1965).

This may be a situation of no relationship between the Elkin(s) mentioned above and the ones you mentioned---or it may be one of those family connections that last for several generations. Also, I've seen a suggestion on ancestry.com family trees that Elkin(s) might be a shortened form of Elkington or Elkinton. We are looking at the possibility that Mary Stratton Bryan Standlee was a descendant of Enoch and Amy Elkington Stratton.---Judy

      44. viii. Joel Christopher Ozier, m. Mary Jane Donaldson; b. 1834 TN.

      44. Joel Christopher Ozier3 Butler (Neely2, Elias1) married Mary Jane Donaldson, daughter of Robert Donaldson and Deborah (--?--) (at least 5 ch). He was born in 1834 TN.
He appeared on the census of 1880 Williams, Stone, MO.

Children of Joel Christopher Ozier3 Butler and Mary Jane Donaldson were as follows:

      i. Susan Cordelia4; m. Allen Justus Hale, son of Turner Ogborn Hale and Sarah Butler, 1872.
      ii. Malissa; b. 1855 AR.
      iii. Queen Ellen; b. Dec 1861AR (or b. 1860); m. Joseph R. Brinley 12 Sep 1881 Barry, MO.
iv. Grant; b. 1869 MO. Three Grant Butlers are known (2nd is Thomas Grant Butler; third is Ulysses Grant Butler, who stayed in Carroll Co. TN).
      v. Wilson; b. 1872 MO. Is this Wilson E. who was b. 4 Oct 1872 d. 23 Sep 1962, wife M. Etta _?_ 17 Jan 1878-10 Mar 1905, son Ernest C. 24 Mar 1897-14 Oct 1900, all bur. Blue Eye cem.?
vi. Robert; m. Rachel Shook; bur. near Grant's Pass,,, OR; b. 1876 MO. Barbara Carter relates that a contact of hers from OK was told by her grandmother that Robert was not a Butler but was found by Joel Butler's family in an abandoned house; another possibility is that Robert was born out of wedlock to one of Joel's older daughters.39

      Surnames: Butler

According to my information Robert Nely or Nely Robert Butler or N.R. Butler was born in Carrol Co, in 1875. We are told it was tradition in his family for a mans son to take his dads first name as his middle name, he named his son William Robert Butler. The confusion on which is his first vs his middle name is because I have various documents he signed all three ways listed above.
His parents died when he was young and he was raised by a sister into his teens when he ran away and moved to Oregon. The story is that he and his family moved back and forth between Stone and Carroll counties. I have seen the Elias Butler line but can not find a tie in, although I am sure there is a relation because of the family stories that were passed on that I have now found on the net and read! If you have any info on this man please let me know! It would mean the world to my father if I could get him connected to his line!
      Thankyou

It's been about 11 years since the previous post. I have the following info on apparently the same person. There are some questions concerning his parentage.

Neely Robert Butler b. ca. 1876 Viola, Stone Co. MO (across the river from Carroll Co. AR), mar. Rachel Shook; he is bur. near Grants Pass, OR. Census records indicate that he is a son of Joel O. Butler (b. 1834 TN, d. aft. 1880) and Mary Jane "Gincy" Donaldson (b. 1837 IN or NC, d. aft 1880); Gincy/Gincie/Gensie/Jennie/etc. are nicknames for Jane.

1880 census Stone Co. MO, Williams township: Joel Buttler 46 TN NC NC, Gencies wife 43 IN TN NC, Malissa dau 25 AR TN IN, Ellen dau 20 AR TN IN, Grant son 11 MO TN IN, Wilson son 8 MO TN IN, Robbert son 4 MO TN IN.

Joel O. is sometimes called Joel Christopher Ozier Butler, as he may have been nicknamed "Chris". The middle name "Ozier" is someone's guess based on his mother's surname, but neither Christopher nor Ozier are verified by any known record, so I call him Joel O. He is a son of Neely Butler (1796-1880) and Amy Arina Ozier (1799-1875). Neely is a son of Elias Butler of Montgomery Co. NC and Carroll Co. TN (not AR), as mentioned in the previous post. I call N. R. b. 1876 Neely rather than Nely, since his grandfather is Neely (that's the likely connection).

Mary Jane Donaldson is the dau. of Robert Donaldson (b. ca. 1805 TN, d. bef. 1870) and Deborah _?_ (b. ca. 1802, d. ca. 1882 Stone Co. MO). This Robert Donaldson is in the 1840/50/60 censuses of Carroll Co. AR. Deborah Donaldson's will dated 26 Dec 1881 Stone Co. MO, probated 13 Mar 1882; mentions "my children" Susan Shipman, Carline (Caroline?) Hulsey (Hulse/Hulce?), Jonathan Donaldson, $5 each; balance of estate to Lidy Gady (Gaddy) and Jincy Butler (also ch.?). Deborah had an earlier marriage to an unk. Green, by whom she had 2 ch. Lydia (mar. James Gaddy, the "Lidy Gady" in her will) and Terry (in 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses with Deborah's family, apparently never married). The will doesn't explicitly name Jincy Butler as a daughter, but the 1850 census indicates that this is the case.

One source Barbara Carter relates that a contact of hers from OK was told by her grandmother that Robert was not a Butler but was found by Joel Butler's family in an abandoned house; although he is called the son of Joel in the 1880 census, this abandoned house story is also interesting, though it seems a bit far-fetched. Perhaps another possibility is that Robert was born out of wedlock to one of Joel's daughters; since Susan b. 1858 had already mar. Allen Justus Hale in 1876, it would more likely have been Malissa b. 1855 or Queen Ellen (b. 1861, did not marry Joseph Brinley until 1881), both of whom are enum. with Joel in 1880. DNA testing might in the future shed some light on this, especially if descendants of Neely Robert don't match descendants of Joel O.

My Butler line does not seem to be related to this one, despite published genealogies to the contrary (DNA testing shows a "no match" between me and a descendant of Neely's son Rev. Martin J. Butler). But I have studied the Elias Butler family quite a bit - see the reports at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~b2222b/index.htm; these reports are slightly dated - am having software problems preventing updates.

      • xi. Amy Arena; b. 1842 AR. She sometimes seen as Anna Arena, but handwriting in 1860 census is most likely Amy rather than Any. She and Amy Adeline Butler could be same person? She appeared on the census of 1860 Carroll, AR with her parents.
