| 859 | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Found at findagrave.com on 10/21/2023 Elizabeth Martiau Reade Birth: 12 Dec 1625 York County, Virginia, USA Death: 10 Feb 1696 (aged 70) Yorktown, York County, Virginia, USA Burial: Grace Episcopal Churchyard, Yorktown, York County, Virginia, USA Memorial #: 11591903 Bio: Daughter of Capt. Nicholas and Elizabeth Martiau (1st wife). Married Col George Reade (1st spouse) in 1641 at Yorktown, York Co.,VA. She is decended from the Royal House of England starting with Henry the III thru Edward I, King of England. Adventurers of Purse and Person 1607 - 1624/5 and Their Families" published by the Order of First Families of Virginia, indicates in a footnote (pp. 419-420) the discrepancy between the dates inscribed on his Grace Church tablets and the filing of the wills for George Read and his wife Elizabeth as follows: "His and his wife's gravestones were discovered during street excavations in Yorktown in 1931. The inscriptions on both were recut with errors. George Reade's stone now states he died Oct. 1674, "he being in the 66th yr of his age." Since the date should be 1671 (per his will), either the age shown, or his year of birth, is in error as well....The gravestone of Elizabeth (Martiau) Read now states she was born in 1625 and died in 1696, "being in ye 71st yeare of her age." Since the year of death should be 1686 (per her will), again the age or year of birth is in error. Since Nicholas Martiau claimed...his daughter Elizabeth as headrights...it would appear Elizabeth was born prior to his arrival in Virginia in 1620...and that Elizabeth's birth occurred in 1615 rather than 1625."In 1645 Nicholas Martian married 3rd wife Isabella Beach, as shown by the records of York. His will was dated March 1, 1657 or '67, and was proved April 4, 1657. He named his oldest daughter Elizabeth, who had crossed the ocean with him and became the wife of George Reade, Mary, his second daughter, wife of John Scarbrook, of York Co.; Sarah, his third daughter, wife of Capt. William Fuller, the Puritan Governor of Maryland. Elizbeth (Martiau) Reade's will was written Feb. 10, 1685 and proven Jan. 24 1686/87 in York Co., VA. Born an illegitimate son of Geoffrey Plantagenet of Anjou he was known as Hamelin the Bastard or Hamelin d'Anjou, and was a half-brother of King Henry II of England. He was granted the title of Vicomte de Touraine. In 1164, he was present on the Council of Northampton which tried Thomas Becket and found him guilty of perjury and heresy. That same year, the king arranged his half brother's marriage to one of the wealthiest heiresses in England, Isabella de Warenne, who was in her own right, Countess of Surrey. After the wedding, he adopted his wife's name, and became the 5th Earl of Surrey in right of his wife. The couple had at least five children, they and all their descendants were called de Warenne. In 1173, while Henry II dealt with rebellious sons, his half-brother remained his staunch ally. In 1176 he escorted Princess Joan, his niece, to Sicily for her marriage to King William II. After Henry's death, he participated in the coronation of his nephew Richard I and then in John's coronation. In 1200 he was granted lands at Conisborough, Yorkshire where his seat, Conisbrough Castle, stands. He died at about age 72 and was interred at the Chapter House at Lewes Priory, in Sussex. He married Anne , who was possibly, as has been suggested, a dtr of the stepfather by a 1st wife; but it is also possible that when, in 1665, their son John spoke of Mr. Gosmer as his grandfather, it was not because of his mothers parentage, but because through his father he was a step-grandson. (There is more; see The Woodruffs of New Jersey, by Francis E. Woodruff [New York: The Grafton Press,1909] pp. 13ff.) Came to America in 1639, with wife Ann, infant son John III, mother Elizabeth, and stepfather John Gosmer, (and other family?) to Lynn, Mass. The Woodruffs of New Jersey. In 1639, at Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1640, a founder of Southampton, Long Island, New York. He was a man of wealth and refinement. ============================== Thank you for consideration. The name of Francis Cornwell's previous wife also was Mary, as indicated in an 1805 Pittsylvania County, VA, deed. Her maiden surname is unknown. She may be the mother of the other nine children of Francis Cornwell, though we cannot prove this. 10 More information on Thompson Cornwell and his family is found in: The Yeaman Family of Pittsylvania County, Virginia: Their Origin, Relatives, & Descendants, by Robert E. King, privately printed, Anchorage, AK, 1995, pp. 52-63. 11 The 1830 federal census of Smith Co., TN, listed her as "Elizabeth," with some researchers identifying her as a daughter of Abia Cheatham, who settled in Smith Co., TN. Fouche's eight children were listed in Smith County, TN, Court Minutes Vol. 13, p. 10, dated August 30,1830. 12 Their descendants are traced in King (1995:64-69). She was a sister to Jane Yeaman (above). 659 Appendix: Cornwell Family Records 7. Willis Cornwell, (b. March 3,1827, d. April 5, 1906, per Bible records) married (lsl) Mary E. McCarver in 1846, and (2,ul) Mary J. Condra in 1872 and had a total of sixteen children: (1) infant not named; (2) Login Franklin Cornwell; (3) Francis Alexander Cornwell; (4) Willis Henderson Cornwell; (5) William Howard Cornwell, husband of Louise Francis; (6) Mary Matilda Cornwell; (7) Isolinas Cornwell; (8) Ida Adaline Agness Cornwell; (9) Ida Adaline Davis Cornwell; (10) Johney Spragings Cornwell; (11) Sam Bob Lee Cornwell; (12) Teressa Viletta Cornwell; (13) stillborn child; (14) Nutin McNab Cornwell; (15) Hermosa Grace Cornwell; and (16) Andrew Benton Cornwell (1879-1950).13 In addition, research on the family of Francis Cornwell (d. 1834) has revealed three other children: 8. Elizabeth Cornwell (1781-1860) married David Cole (1780-1857), son of Tunus Cole, on (bond dated) December 2,1805, Pittsylvania Co., VA, and had six children: (1) EU Cole (1806-1882), husband of Sarah Ann Richardson;14 (2) Henry Cole, husband of Frances (...); (3) Leah Cole (never married); (4) Mahala Cole; (5) Rebecca Cole; and (6) William D. Cole (b. Nov 18, 1824, d. Jul 1, 1907) married on Aug 26, 1860, Mary H. Bennett (b. Dec 18,1829, d. Nov 16,1901) and had six children. 9. Milly Cornwell (1784-1877) married a supposed-cousin, Charles Cornwell, son of "Collet Cornwell," and had seven children: (1) Mary F. Cornwell, wife of James Sutton; (2) Artemisia Cornwell, wife of Elam Russell; (3) Cordelia "Delia" Cornwell, wife of King Robinson; (4) Elizabeth "Betsy" Cornwell, wife of Madison Smith; (5) Coleman Cornwell, husband of a Miss Fagg; (6) Francis Cornwell, husband of (1st) a Miss Potter and (2nd) Elizabeth Hanes; and (7) Jesse Cornwell. 10. Samuel C. Cornwell (dee'd pre-May 1837 in Smith Co., TN) As early as February 15, 1802, Francis Cornwell (d. 1834) and family moved to Pittsylvania County, VA, where they were listed in a deed (Pittsylvania Co., VA, Deed Book 12, p. 507). The last deed recorded there for him was dated November 18,1817, (Pittsylvania Co., VA, Deed Book 21, p. 208). Following that, Francis migrated to Smith County, TN, where several of his children already had settled. In 1997, he has many descendants living in Pittsylvania County, VA, Smith County, TN, and elsewhere. Footnotes: 13 Andrew's grandson, Carl Goad of Homer, IL, supplied much of the information summarized in this section on the Francis Cornwell (d. 1834) family. He corresponded in the 1970s and early 1980s with Robert E. King, a co-author of this history. 14 Sarah Ann Richardson (1832-1910) was a cousin through the Collie family, being a daughter of Lucy (Collie) Richardson (1802-1889), who was a granddaughter of James Collie (b. 1718), the immigrant, and Ann (Cornwell) Collie. 659 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ found at findagrave.com on 5/12/2020 Francis Marion Cornwell Birth: 1744 Prince William County, Virginia, USA Death: 1834 (aged 8990) Difficult, Smith County, Tennessee, USA Burial: Unknown Memorial #: 32420427 Bio: Will of Francis Cornwell--1830 In the name of God Amen. | 878 | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- found at findagrave.com Humphrey de Bohun Birth: c. 1276, England Death: Mar. 16, 1322, England 4th Earl of Hereford. Born the son of Humphrey de Bohun, 3rd Earl of Hereford and Maud de Fiennes at Pleshy Castle in Essex. In November 1302 he married King Edward I's daughter, Elizabeth Plantagenet, with whom he had at least eleven children. He held the office of Lord High Constable. He took part in the king's Scottish campaigns in the early 1300s. After the flight of Robert Bruce, de Bohun received many of Bruce's confiscated properties. At the battle of Bannockburn in 1314, he charged the Bruce, and his nephew Henry de Bohun was killed, but he was taken and held for ransom. He was eventually exchanged for Bruce's wife and daughter. He numbered among the peers who opposed Edward II's excesses and banished the royal favorite, Piers Gaveston. In 1316 he successfully led the suppression of the revolt of Llywelyn Bren. By 1322, however, he fell in with Lancaster's rebellion against Edward II, and as the rebels approached Boroughbridge in Yorkshire, de Bohun led an attempt to storm the bridge held by royal pike men. The Earl, however, was run through by pike men secreted beneath the bridge and died in the field, his gruesome death breaking the advance, and spelling failure for the rebels. Son of Sir Walter de Burgh and Aveline FitzJohn, grandson of Sir John FitzGeoffrey and Isabel de Bigod, Sir Richard de Burgh and Margaret de Lacy. Richard married Margaret, the possible daughter of Arnoul II, Count of Guines and Alice de Coucy. They were married before 27 Feb 1281 and had fours sons and six daughters: * Walter de Burgh * John de Burgh, married Elizbeth de Clare * Thomas de Burgh * Sir Edmund de Burgh * Eleanor, wife of Thomas de Multon, Lord Multon of Egremont * Elizabeth, wife of Robert de Brus, King of Scotland * Maud, wife of Gilbert de Clare Aveline, wife of John Bermingham, Earl of Louth * Katherine, wife of Maurice FitzThomas * Joan, wife of Thomas FitzGerald, Earl of Kildare & Sir John Darcy, Baron de Knayth Richard was the most powerful of the Burghs, succeeding his father in 1280, and constantly tangling with the Irish, particularly in Connaught, his own Lord. Queen Eleanor granted him her manor of Roteneche in Ireland in 1283. Richard invaded Connaught in 1286, plundering the monasteries and churches, taking hostages and then attacked King of Connaught, Magnus O'Connor at the castle of Milic. Despite his daughter married the King of Scotland, Richard joined King Edward's fight against the Scots. A feud with Sir John FitzThomas, who held Richard hostage in his own castle Dec 1294 to Mar 1295 led to Sir John's forfeit of 120 librates (land having the annual value of one pound.) He was appointed Lieutenant of Ireland in 1308, but the position was immediately canceled and give to Peter de Gaveston, the favorite of Edward II. Invasions into Ireland by Edward Bruce and Felim Conhuir lost Richard his authority until he recovered Ulster after the defeat at Faughart and ultimately, Conhuir's death. Sir Richard built churches, granted lands to religious groups, was a benefactor of the Cistercian house of St Mary at Dunbrody and built three castles; Ballimore, Greencastle and Sligo, and founded the Carmelite monastery at Loughrea, Connaught, Ireland. Richard retired to the Athassel Priory, Cashel, Donegal, Ireland, where he died. | 887 | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- found at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mjr6387&id=I95961 ----------------------------------------------- Post-em Display Return to WorldConnect ----------------------------------------------- Database: mjr6387 Individual: I95961 ----------------------------------------------- Martin Wood 2012-03-31 01:29:20 [email protected] I have seen your RootsWeb pages under 'Mary Eileen Moore' and think you should know the following: Various otherwise reputable genealogy sites contain serious errors in regard to this family, some even giving a high star rating for accuracy. The documented facts are as follows: Mary More, the daughter of Thomas More II (1531-1606) and Mary Scrope (1534-1607) was born on 25 December 1553. However, she was NOT born at Barnborough (the correct spelling), Yorkshire, but at Hambleden, Buckinghamshire. The event is recorded in the familys Book of Hours. I have a copy of the entry. Mary did not have 'Eileen' anywhere in her name. Mary married Edward More (of an unrelated family) born at Lower Haddon in the Parish of Bampton, Oxfordshire, where his family farmed their estate. The name 'Robert' does not appear anywhere in Edward's records. Many people write Edwards second name Moore, but I have a copy of a letter from one of their daughters which shows that they wrote their own name More (i.e. with one o). Edwards birthdate is usually given as c.1560, but this is pure guesswork. His date of birth/baptism are not recorded. The family had remained Catholic and these events were not recorded in Church of England Parish Registers. Edward and Mary married, most probably in 1585-6 as, for a few years before that, Edward was in various London prisons as a convicted Recusant (i.e. someone who had refused to conform to the Church of England). Family records, Jesuit Records, Convent Records (three of the daughters became Nuns at Convents in Catholic Europe) and Court Records for Recusancy show that Edward and Mary spent all their married life on the small estate owned by Marys father at Low Leyton, Essex. They had no connection with Shropshire. Low Leyton is where their seven children were born - five daughters and two sons. The two sons were Henry and Thomas, both of who were sent into Catholic Europe to be educated. They both became Jesuit Priests. Edward died at Low Leyton in 1605 when Mary was granted permission by the Court to administer his almost non-existent estate. Mary later went to live with one of her married daughters at Stondon Massey, Essex where she died in 1630. It follows from the above that Edward and Mary DID NOT have a son John Moore - let alone a Robert John Moore. Nor did they have a daughter Mary Jane Moore. According to which site you visit, John Moore is said to have been born in Bampton, Oxford, Reading, Shropshire (a County, not a town or village), Swaffham in Norfolk, and even in Ireland all (apart from the Parish of Bampton) being guesses/invention. The John Moore who emigrated to Virginia in the ship Bona Nova in 1620, followed two years later by his wife Elizabeth (said to have been a Merritt ) in the Abigail, settled in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. The English ancestry of this John Moore is unknown. The Elizabeth City line gave rise to an Augustine Moore who married Mary Woolley. There is, however, no known connection between this line and, as some record, the line of Colonel Augustine Moore of King Williams County. Colonel Augustine Moore is said to have been born in England in 1585. He died in Virginia in 1643.He married, as his second wife, the widow Elizabeth Seaton who was, by birth a Todd. They had five children. The English ancestry of Col. Augustine Moore is also unknown. You say you welcome additions/corrections, so I hope this will be of interest to you. The following is from The Heritage of Old Buncombe County, Doris Cline Ward, Editor (1981) at 190-191 (Article #307, "Major William and Margaret McConnell Davidson" by Mrs. Dorothy Hyde and Mr. William E. Bryson): Major William Davidson was born October 10, 1736 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania [most likely in Ireland], the son of John and Mary Morrison Davidson and twin brother to Samuel. He married Margaret McConnell, daughter of John Sr. and Mary Winsley McConnell, who were among the first settlers of Rowan County, and during the Revolutionary War the family was living in Rowan County (now McDowell) at a place called the Glades, on the Catawba River. William was active in the fight for independence -- a member of the Committee on Safety and Independence, and a Lieutenant in Captain Houston's Company. He was in the military campaigns of 1780-81 when Cornwallis invaded North Carolina and fought at King's Mountain, during which time he rose to the rank of Major. In 1785, several months after the death of his brother Samuel, William and his family crossed the mountains into the Swannanoa Valley and settled on a large, fertile farm near the mouth of Bee Tree River. On August 7, 1787, the first land grant in Buncombe County was issued to William and James Davidson for 600 acres "on both sides of the Savannah" (Swannanoa). William and Margaret were charter members of Piney Grove Presbyterian Church (now Swannanoa). At his death, Major Davidson was buried on his plantation, but later his body was moved to the Swannanoa Presbyterian Church Cemetery, and in July 1902 the D.A.R. erected a monument to his memory. Their children were: Mary (1790-1842) m. Daniel Smith; John, b. 1764; Hugh and George (b. 1768); Jean (1772-1804) m. Thomas Davidson; Sallie (1774-1838) m. Joshua Williams; Ruth b. 1777 m. General Samuel Williams; William Mitchell (1780-1840) m. Elizabeth Vance; and Samuel Winslow Davidson. The Ruth Davidson Chapter DAR, Asheville, was named in honor of Ruth, above. She was the youngest daughter of Thibaut IV de Blois, a brother of King Stephen, and Mathilde of Carinthia. She married Louis VII on November 13th, 1160 in Paris, five weeks after his second wife Constance de Castille had died. They both liked each other and she had some influence on him. Louis married his daughters, Marie and Alix, from his first marriage to her brothers, Henri and Thibaut. In 1165 she gave birth to the longed for successor, Philippe-Auguste. Two girls, Alix and Agnes, were born in 1170 and 1171. Following tradition her son was crowned king when he was fourteen, at this time Louis was very ill. Adèle hoped to act as a regent for him if Louis died suddenly, but Philippe surprised everyone and claimed the power for himself and choose a wife without his parents consent. Her husband died in 1180 and Philippe became king. During his absence on the crusade she reigned the kingdom following strict rules set by him. After his return to France she quietly retired.
