| 752 | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- found at findagrave.com Humphrey de Bohun Birth: 1249 Essex, England Death: Dec. 31, 1298 Pleshey Essex, England 7th Erl of Hereford, 8th Earl of Essex. Baron of Pleshy, Essex. Baron of Kingston, Herefordshire. Hereditary Constable of England and Deputy of England. Son and heir of Sir Humphrey de Bohun V and Eleanor de Brewes. Grandson of Sir Humphrey de Bohun and Maud de Eu, William de Brewes and Eve Marsha, daughter of William Marshall, 4th Earl of Pembroke and regent to King Henry III. Husband of Maud de Fiennes, daughter of Ingram de Fiennes and Isabelle Conde, daughter of Jacques, married 1275. They had one son, Sir Humphrey, Earl of Hereford and Essex, who would marry Elizabeth of England, the daughter of Edward I, King of England, and widow of John Holand. Humphrey was an heir to his grandfather as his father died in 1265, a prisoner at Beeston Castle. He was granted seisin of his mother's lands at aged 16(including one quarter of one third of the barony of Miles Gloucester, the lordships and manors of Hay, Huntingdon, Haverford and Brecknock) but the lands were overseen by the king until 1270. Humphrey was not able to take possession of Brecon and the lordship of Clare from the Welsh until 1276. Humphrey was known for his fierce defense of his lands, and the close relationship he had with his local folk. He was active in the Welsh wars, the opposition to King Edward over the 1297 Charters of the Magna Carta, and spent most his career recapturing Marcher lands from Llywelyn Gruffydd. He was opposed to other Marcher lords, Gilbert de Clare, the Earl of Gloucester, and Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk. Edward I interfered when the conflicts threatened civil war, and the wars were turned towards Scotland with their defeat at Stirling Bridge. Humphrey died at Pleshey Castle, and was buried alongside his wife who had pre-deceased him. | 753 | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- found at findagrave.com Maud Braose Birth: 1224 Brecon, Wales Death: Mar. 23, 1300 Wigmore Herefordshire, England Maud de Braose, Baroness Wigmore was a noble heiress and a member of the powerful de Braose family which held many lordships and domains in the Welsh Marches. She was the wife of Roger Mortimer, 1st Baron Wigmore, a celebrated soldier and Marcher baron. A staunch Royalist during the Second Barons' War, it was she who devised the plan to rescue Prince Edward (the future King Edward I of England) from the custody of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester. Maud was born in Wales in 1224, the second eldest daughter and co-heiress of Marcher lord William de Braose, 10th Baron Abergavenny and Eva Marshal. Maud had three sisters, Isabella, wife of Prince Dafydd ap Llywelyn; Eleanor, wife of Humphrey de Bohun; and Eve, wife of William de Cantelou. Her paternal grandparents were Reginald de Braose, 9th Baron Abergavenny and Grecia de Briwere. Her maternal grandparents were William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke, daughter of Strongbow and Aoife of Leinster. On 2 May 1230, when Maud was just six years old, her father was hanged by orders of Llewelyn the Great, Prince of Wales for alleged adultery with the latter's wife, Joan,Lady of Wales. Maud was described as beautiful and nimble-witted. During the Second Barons' War, she also proved to be a staunch Royalist. It was Maud herself who devised a plan for the escape of Prince Edward after he had been taken hostage by Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester following the Battle of Lewes. On 28 May 1265, when the Prince was held in custody at Hereford Castle, Maud sent a party of horsemen to spirit him away to Wigmore Castle while he was out in the open fields, some distance from the castle, taking exercise by racing horses with his unsuspecting guardians as she had instructed him to do in the messages she had smuggled to him previously. At a signal from one of the horsemen, Edward galloped off to join the party of his liberators, where they escorted him to Wigmore Castle, twenty miles away, where Maud was waiting. She gave the Prince refreshments before sending him on to Ludlow Castle where he met up with the Earl of Gloucester who had defected to the side of the King. At the Battle of Evesham on 4 August 1265, Maud's husband Roger fought on the side of Prince Edward, and personally killed Simon de Montfort. As a reward, Roger was given de Montfort's severed head and other parts of his anatomy. Roger sent these gruesome trophies home to Wigmore Castle as a gift to Maud. She held a great feast that very night to celebrate the victory. De Montfort's head was raised in the Great Hall, still attached to the point of the lance. In 1300, Maud is recorded as having presented to a vacant benefice in the Stoke Bliss parish church in Herefordshire, its advowson having originally belonged to the Mortimers, but was bequeathed to Limebrook Priory by Roger. Maud died on an unknown date sometime between 1300 and 23 March 1301. She was buried in Wigmore Abbey. Her husband Roger had died on 30 October 1282. In 1247 Maud married Roger Mortimer of Wigmore. As the eldest son of Ralph de Mortimer and his Welsh wife, Princess Gwladys Ddu, Roger was himself a scion of another important Marcher family, and had succeeded his father in 1246, upon the latter's death. He was created 1st Baron Wigmore on an unknown date. Maud was seven years his senior, and they had been betrothed since childhood. On the occasion of their marriage, the honour of Radnor passed from the de Braose to the Mortimer family. Her marriage portion was some land at Tetbury which she inherited from her grandfather, Reginald de Braose. She also had inherited the Manor of Charlton sometime before her marriage. Roger and Maud's principal residence was the Mortimers' family seat, Wigmore Castle in Herefordshire. Roger and Maud together had seven children: Ralph Mortimer (died before 10 August 1274), Sheriff of Shropshire and Staffordshire. Edmund Mortimer, 2nd Baron Wigmore (1251-17 July 1304), married Margaret de Fiennes, daughter of William II de Fiennes and Blanche de Brienne, by whom he had issue, including Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March. Isabella Mortimer, married firstly, John Fitzalan, 7th Earl of Arundel, by whom she had issue; she married secondly, Ralph d'Arderne; she married thirdly, Robert de Hastang. Margaret Mortimer (died September 1297), married Robert de Vere, 6th Earl of Oxford, by whom she had one son. Roger Mortimer of Chirk (died 3 August 1336 Tower of London), married Lucy de Wafre, by whom he had one son. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for having participated in the rebellion of Thomas of Lancaster in 1321. Geoffrey Mortimer (died before 1282), he was unmarried. William Mortimer (died before June 1297), married as her first husband, Hawise de Muscegros. All the monarchs of England from 1413, as well as Mary, Queen of Scots, were directly descended from Maud, as is the current British Royal Family. Queen consorts Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were also notable descendants of Maud de Braose through the latter's daughter Isabella, Countess of Arundel. Garrett & Caleb Garrett is John Garrett, Sr.: John Garrett, Sr. (1750-1806) has not been confirmed as the father of George W. Garrett (1791-1870) and Caleb Garrett (1795-1841), who are confirmed to be brothers. There are several data matches that point to John Garrett, Sr. as their father: 1) John Garrett, Sr. moved from Prince Edward Co, VA (possibly via Jefferson Co, TN) to Nashville, Davidson Co, TN about 1797; George W. Garrett was born in VA in 1791 and was serving in the militia in Nashville, Davidson Co, TN in 1812. 2) John Garrett, Sr. died in Williamson Co, TN in 1806; George W. Garrett was married in Franklin, Williamson Co, TN in 1817; Caleb Garrett lived about 40 of his 46 years in Franklin, Williamson Co, TN. 3) George W. Garrett named his 1st son John Garrett; John Garrett, the son of George W. Garrett, named his 1st son Thomas and his 2nd son John. (John Garrett, Sr. had sons named Thomas and John.) 4) George W. Garrett's second son (Caleb) named his first son John Garrett. 5) George Garrett (#894) and Thomas Garrett (#901) are the only persons with Garrett surname in the 1812 Davidson Co, TN Tax List that are listed as "In Nashville & Vicinity". 6) Jacob Garrett (1730-c1798) has been confirmed to be the father of John Garrett, Sr. (1750-1806). Note: It should be taken into account that minors many times were not named in a Last Will and Testament because they had no legal standing; and it should be taken into account as well that when some minors were named, then usually all "minors" were named. ________________________________________________________ Valley Forge Muster Roll, Revolutionary War Name ID Number State Rank Regiment GARRETT, JOHN VA05631 VA PRIVATE 1 VA Note: This record is listed here for future reference; there is no confirmed connection at this time. Paternal granddaughter of King Sancho III of Castile and Blanca Ramírez of Navarre. Maternal granddaughter of King Henry II of England and Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine. Berenguela was first betrothed to Conrad II, Duke of Swabia, before 1196, but he was murdered before their marriage could be solemnized. She married King Alfonso IX of León in 1197, and together they had five children. Their marriage was annulled, however, in 1204 by Pope Innocent III because they were too closely related to each other. After the annulment, the Queen and her children returned to Castile, where she thwarted her former husband's attempts to disinherit her children. When her father died in 1214, she became Regent of Castile for her young brother Enrique I, and administered the government in his name. Enrique was accidentally killed in 1217, and because he died without issue, Berenguela became Queen of Castile in her own right. She was thirty-seven years old at the time of her accession, and abdicated the same year in favor of her eldest son, who became Ferdinand III of Castile. Following her abdication, Berenguela served as her son's adviser and retired to the Abbey de Santa María la Real de las Huelgas, where she died and was buried in 1246. Elizabeth died 04 April 1497 and was buried in the nun's choir of the Convent of the Minoresses of Aldgate. Her will left instructions to distribute her money to the poor of Whitechapel and Hackney. Sir Thomas Howard would receive licence to marry her cousin, Agnes Tilney, who had six more children. Memorial #: 95499038 Bio: Son of James, brother of James Earl of Wiltshire and Earl of Ormond. Burial Source Citation: Book 'The Catalogue of Most Memorable Tombs In the Churches of London', 1669, page 13. Thomas Butler, 7th Earl of Ormond, P.C. (c. 1426 - 3 August 1515) was the youngest son of James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormond and Joan de Beauchamp. He was attainted, but restored by Henry VII's first Parliament in November 1485, and the statutes made at Westminster, by Edward IV, which declared him and his brothers traitors, were abrogated. Thomas Butler, as an Irish peer, should only have sat in the Irish parliament. However, as a personal friend of Henry VII of England, he was summoned to the English parliament in November 1488 as "Thomas Ormond de Rochford, chevaler". At this time, he was already 8th Earl of Carrick and 7th Earl of Ormond, having succeeded his childless older brothers James Butler, 5th Earl of Ormond and John Butler, 6th Earl of Ormond. On his death, the "barony" supposedly created in 1488 fell into abeyance. He was afterwards sworn of the Privy Council of England. He was known as The Wool Earl, due to his enormous wealth. Besides being in the possession of major lands in the Irish counties of Kilkenny and Tipperary, he owned 72 manors in England, making him one of the richest subjects in the realm. In 1509, he was appointed Lord Chamberlain to Catherine of Aragon. He held this post until 1512. | 797 | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ found at findagrave.com Sir John Howard Birth: 1422 Stoke by Nayland Suffolk, England Death: Aug. 22, 1485 Norfolk, England lst Duke of Norfolk of the Howard family, son & heir of Sir Robert Howard by Margaret, dau of Thomas Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, & cousin & ultimately coheiress of John Mowbray, 4th duke of Norfolk (d. 1475). He entered the service of his kinsman John Mowbray, 3rd duke of Norfolk. He was of service to the Yorkist cause, for on the accession of Edward IV in 1461 he was knighted, appointed constable of Colchester Castle, sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, and one of the king's carvers, and was known to have 'great fellowship' with the king. In 1462 he was appointed constable of Norwich Castle, and received grants of several manors forfeited by the Earl of Wiltshire and others. He was joined in a commission with Lords Fauconberg and Clinton to keep the seas; and they made a descent on Brittany, and took Croquet and the Isle of Rhé. Towards the end of the year he served under Norfolk against the Lancastrians in the north, and was sent by the duke from Newcastle to help the Earl of Warwick at Warkworth, and in the spring of 1464 was with Norfolk in Wales when the duke was securing the country for the king. Howard returned home on 8 June (1464), and bought the reversion of the constableship of Bamborough Castle. On 3 Nov. 1465 his wife Catharine(dau of Wm., Lord Moleyns,) died. He married his 2nd wife, Margaret, dau of Sir John Chedworth, and in Apr was elected knight of the shire for Suffolk. He was employed in June 1468 in attending the king's sis Eliz to Flanders on her marriage with Charles, duke of Burgundy . When Henry VI was restored he created Howard a baron by a writ of summons dated 15 Oct. 1470, making him Baron de Howard. Nevertheless, he appears to have remained faithful to the Yorkist cause. He commanded a fleet sent to oppose the Lancastrians & on Edward's landing in Mar,1471 proclaimed him king in Suffolk. Was at the battles of Barnet & Tewkesbury. In June he was appointed deputy-governor of Calais, and after having sworn to maintain the succession of the Prince of Wales, crossed over on 3 June, and was engaged in negotiations with France. When Edward invaded France in July 1475 he was accompanied by Howard, who was one of the king's most trusted councillors during the expedition; he was one of the commissioners who made the truce at Amiens, received a pension from Louis XI, and met Philip de Commines to arrange the conference between the two kings at Picquigny. He remained in France as a hostage for a short time after Edward left, and on his return to England received from the king as a reward for his fidelity and prudence grants of several manors in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. He also was sent to Scotland in command of a fleet. . At the funeral of Edward in April 1483, Howard, who is styled the king's bannerer, bore the late king's banner. Next he attached himself to Richard of Gloucester, and became privy to all his plans and doings. He was appointed high steward of the duchy of Lancaster on 13 May, and a privy councillor, and on 28 June was created Duke of Norfolk and earl marshal with remainder to the heirs male of his body, the patent thus reviving the dignities held by the Mowbrays and Thomas of Brotherton, son of Edward I, from whom he was descended on the mother's side through females. He was concerned in persuading the widowed queen [Elizabeth Woodville] to deliver up her younger son the Duke of York, that he might be lodged with his brother in the Tower. At the coronation of Richard III on 6 July he acted as high steward, bore the crown, and as marshal rode into Westminster Hall after the ceremony. He was appointed admiral of England, Ireland, and Aquitaine. Was with Richardn his visit to the north on 12 Sept. 1484 when he was nominated chief of the commissioners to treat with the ambassadors of James III of Scotland. | 799 | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ found at findagrave.com Thomas Mowbray, I Birth: May 22, 1367 Epworth Lincolnshire, England Death: Sep. 22, 1399 Venice Veneto, Italy Named 1st Duke of Norfolk, Baron Mowbray and Baron Segrave when his elder brother John died in Feb. 1382; about the same time Richard II created him Earl of Nottingham, a title held by his dead brother, & made him marshal of England for life.lst married Elizabeth Le Strange daug. of John le Strange 4th Lord Strange (of Blackmere). 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Fitzalan dau. of Richard 11th Earl of Arundel and Elizabeth de B by whom he fathered Lady Margaret (Howard), Thomas 2nd Duke, John de Mowbray and Lady Isabel Mowbray. He was a favorite with King for awhile. Later he was present when Gloucester was arrested at Pleshey, and Froissart says that he, (Nottingham or Mowbray) actually beheaded Arundel himself. (his brother-in-law). Gloucester was entrusted to his keeping at Calais, and in September 1397 he reported that his prisoner was dead. The duke had been murdered, and Nottingham was probably responsible, although the evidence against him is not conclusive. As a reward he received most of Arundel's lands in Surrey and Sussex, and was created duke of Norfolk. In a dispute for loyalties, a duel was planned but King stopped by bannishing men. Mowbray (or Nottingham) got to keep his estates but had to leave country. He lived in Paris until treaty was signed between ENG & France. He died in Venice, Italy where he was buried at St George's Abbey. His body was later supposedly turned to England.
