Edward I

Birth: Jun. 17, 1239
Death: Jul. 7, 1307

English Monarch. The eldest son of Henry III and Eleanor of Provence, he was known as Longshanks and "Hammer of the Scots". He ascended the throne upon the death of Henry in 1272, but was not formally crowned until August 19, 1274. He married Eleanor of Castile at Burgos, Spain on October 18, 1254. To her he was a loving and devoted, if not entirely faithful, husband and they had 16 children. After Eleanor's death in 1290, he married Margaret of France on September 8, 1299. They had three children. Much of Edward's reign was spent at war. He completed the conquest of Wales, defeating and uniting the Welsh marches, and defended his duchy of Gascony in France. But the latter half of his reign would be consumed by trouble in Scotland. The death of the young Margaret, Maid of Norway left the throne of Scotland vacant, and Edward siezed upon the opportunity to establish his control. He appointed John Balliol to the throne, but retained direct rule over the Scots and Balliol. In 1297 William Wallace rebelled and recovered much of the country, but Edward crushed the rebellion, captured Wallace and had him executed. He then summoned a complete Parliament, including elected Scottish representatives, and it was decided that a Council would rule Scotland under Edward's supervision. But Robert the Bruce unexpectedly rebelled and murdered his fellow Councillors. Despite failing health, Edward once again went north. He died en route to Scotland at Burgh-On-Sands, Cumbria at the age of 68. He was succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Edward II. (bio by: VampireRed)

Thibaut II "le Grand" de Champagne

Birth: Apr. 2, 1090
Death: Jan. 10, 1152

Nobility, as Thibaut II Count of Champagne and as Thibaut IV Count of Blois. He was the second eldest son of Etienne Henri de Blois and Adela of England. He inherited the titles Count of Troyes and Count of Champagne from his uncle Hugh in 1125. His relationship with his liege Louis VI was a very ambivalent relationship. While he supported him in 1111 against a revolt he turned against him two years later when the king denied him the county of Corbeil. He allied with his uncle Henry I of England but signed a peace contract with Louis when Henry was excommunicated. From 1127 on he again opposed the King of France. This constant changing of sides did not change with the new king Louis VII. After Thibaut had helped arrange his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1137 he came in conflict with the king about the introduction of a new Archbishop of Bourges. After the death of Henry I he was proposed by the norman barons to succeed him, as he was the eldest grandson of William the Conqueror. But his youngest brother Stephen was able to obtain the crown. In exchange he received the regency over Normandy which he lost again in 1144 when Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, invaded the county. He was unable to prevent it because he was occupied with Louis who had invaded the Champagne. But soon Louis feared the new strength of the Anjou family and now allied with Thibaut. He is known as a supporter of the Cistercians and for the foundation of the abbeys of Clairvaux, Trois-Fontaines and Pontigny. He also granted Pierre Abelard refuge after he had had to flee from Saint Denis University. Thibaut was married to Mathilde of Carinthia who bore him eleven children. His eldest sons married the daughters of King Louis and Eleanor while his youngest daughter married the king himself.

King Henry, III

Birth: Oct. 1, 1207
Death: Nov. 16, 1272

English Monarch. Born in Winchester eldest son of King John and Isabella of Angouleme. Henry was only nine when his father died in 1216 and he became King of a rebellious nation. A series of regencies ruled in his place until 1234, when Henry assumed power. Order had been restored during the regency, based on the acceptance of Magna Carta which had curtailed the King’s power over his nobles. Henry married Eleanor of Provence in 1236 and with her had at least two sons and three daughters. In 1230 and 1242 misguided attempts to win back territory in France that had been lost by his father ended in failure. Eventually he was forced to sign away Normandy, Maine, Poitou, Touraine and Anjou. Henry's reign was also marked by civil strife, as the English barons demanded more say in the running of the kingdom. The Provisions of Oxford in 1258 and the Provisions of Westminster in 1259 were attempts by the nobility to define the Magna Carta, control appointments and set up an aristocratic council. Henry tried to out maneuver his nobles by obtaining papal absolution from his oaths. Henry renounced the Provisions in 1262 and civil war broke out. The barons, under the leadership of the King’s brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, forced Henry to accept a program of reform. The struggle with his nobles eventually led to the Battle of Lewes in 1264 where the king and his son were captured and imprisoned. In May 1265 Henry’s son, Prince Edward Longshanks, escaped captivity and rallied his forces, defeating and killing de Montfort at Evesham before taking control of government from his father. Royal authority was restored by the Statute of Marlborough in 1267, in which the king promised to uphold Magna Carta. The rest of Henry’s reign was occupied by resolving the civil problems created by the rebellion. (bio by: Iola)

Richard FitzAlan de Arundel

Birth: 1306, England
Death: Jan. 24, 1376, England

10th Earl of Arundel, of the castle and honor of Arundel. Earl of Surrey. Baron of Oswestry, Shropshire. Constable of Chirk, Portchester and Caernarvon Castles, Justiciar of North Wales, Sheriff of Shropshire, Admiral of the West, Constable of the Army. Knight of the Garter. Nicknamed "Copped Hat."

Son and heir to Sir Edmund de Arundel FitzAlan and Alice de Warrene. Grandson of Sir William de Warrene and Joan de Vere, Sir Richard Fitzalan and Alice, daughter of Tommaso I, Marquis of Saluzzo.

Husband of Isabel le Despenser, the daughter of Hugh le Despenser "the younger" executed in 1326, and Eleanor de Clare, the daughter of the Earl of Gloucester and Hertford. They were married in the King's Chapel at Havering-atte-Bower, Essex on 09 Feb 1321. They had one son, Sir Edmund, who married Sibyl Montacute. After they were married, her father settled on them, and their heirs, the manors of Keevil, Wiltshire and Wing and Blakewell, Buckinghamshire. The marriage was advantageous in that he allied himself with Edward II's favorites, but Richard had the marriage annulled and his son bastardized on the grounds that he was underage at the time of the marriage and never agreed to the marriage. The marriage was happily annulled by Pope Clement VI in December of 1344, especially since Richard had been living with Eleanor, his second wife. Historian theorize that after Isabel's father was executed, she was suddenly destitute and had no family estate, Richard simply wished to be rid of her.

Secondly, he became the husband of Eleanor Plantagenet of Lancaster, the daughter of Henry Plantagenet, the Earl of Lancaster and Maud Chaworth, and the widow of Sir John de Beaumont who died 14 April 1342. They were married in the presence of King Edward III at Ditton in Stoke Pogis, Buckinghamshire on 05 Feb 1345 by Papal dispensation as they were related in the 3rd and 4th degrees of kindred. Richard and Eleanor had three sons and two daughters:
Sir Richard, 11th Earl of Arundel
Sir John, Lord Arundel
Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury
Joan Arundel, wife of Sir Humphrey de Bohun
Alice Arundel, wife of Sir Thomas de Holand

Richard also had an illegitimate daughter, Eleanor, who married John de Bereford.

Richard's father, Edmund, was executed by Queen Isabel and her minion, Richard de Mortimer, resulting in the forfeiture of his lands and honors. In 1331, Richard was fully restored to his legacy, obtained the Castle and honors of Arundel, thusly becoming Lord Arundel. Heir to his uncle, Sir John de Warenne, he inherited vast estates including those in Surrey, and Norfolk. He also regained family estates in Sussex and the Welsh Marches as one of Edward, the Black Prince's most trusted advisers. In 1359, he loaned the Prince £2000, receiving as security the gold crown and star of the French King. Richard also loaned Edward III large sums of money. When his uncle's wife, Joan of Bar died in 1361, Richard became the Earl of Surrey.

Sir Richard distinguished himself in the French and Scottish wars, fought at the Battle of Sluys, then Tournai, became Warden o the Scottish Marches, and appointed Lieutenant of Aquitaine in 1340. Sir Richard was one of the principal English commanders in the second division at the Battle of Crecy in 1346.

Richard FitzAlan of Arundel became one of the most powerful of the lords of the northern March, who had 1900 pounds in his coffers at Holt and Clun. In an era where a magnificent tomb of marble cost £8, this was an enormous sum.

Despite his high offices in Wales, in the following decades Arundel spent much of his time fighting in Scotland (during the Second Wars of Scottish Independence) and France (during the Hundred Years' War). In 1337, Arundel was made joint commander of the English army in the north, and the next year he was made the sole commander. He fought in the fall of Calais in 1347.

Richard died at Arundel Castle and was buried at Lewes Priory in Lewes, Sussex, England. In his will Richard requested to be buried "near to the tomb of Eleanor de Lancaster, my wife; and I desire that my tomb be no higher than hers, that no men at arms, horses, hearse, or other pomp, be used at my funeral, but only five torches...as was about the corpse of my wife, be allowed."

Despite all records indicating Richard and Eleanor were buried at Lewes Priory, there is a tomb for them at Chicester Cathedral as well. Richard's death is recorded as 24 January 1376 in Sussex, England. One more source says he wrote his will on 5 December 1375, and died on 14 January 1376 at Arundel Castle.

Walter de Burgh

Birth: 1230
Death: Jul. 28, 1271
Connagh
County Galway, Ireland

Walter de Burgh was 2nd Lord of Connaught and 1st Earl of Ulster (after its restoration), the second son of Richard Mor de Burgh and Egidia de Lacy. He founded Athassel Priory.
He married Aveline, daughter of Sir John FitzGeoffrey, Justiciar of Ireland, by his wife, Isabel Bigod. In a royal order from Westminster in September 1247, Sir John FitzGeoffrey was charged by the King with seizing the lands of Walter de Burgh's older brother Richard, who had died. The de Burgh lands in Connaught were being held by John de Livet, likely the son of Gilbert de Lyvet, one of the earliest Lord Mayors of Dublin and Marmaduke de Eschales (Scales).
Walter was succeeded by his eldest son, Richard Og de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster (The Red Earl of Ulster). Other children were: three sons, Theobald, William and Thomas, and daughter, Egidia who married Sir James Stewart (1243-1309), High Steward of Scotland.

In 1154 Henry became King and his sphere of influence extended thereby from Scotland to the Pyreneeses. Over the years they had 8 children. In 1173 she encouraged her three oldest sons to rebel against him and to claim their inheritances early. In 1174 Henry defeated his sons and captured Eleonore. He imprisoned her for most of the following 16 years. She was released when the message of his death reached her prison. While Richard was in on the Crusade she reined the country very skilled. In the Winter of 1199/1200 with the high age of 77 she travelled over the Pyreneeses to Castile to visit her daughter Aenor and accompany her granddaughter Blanca to France to marry the dauphin. In later years she more often retired to the Abbey of Fontevraud where she died and was buried beside her husband and two of her children. She had survived her husbands and eight of her ten children. During the Revolution her body was exhumed, her bones scattered and never recovered.
