| 4885 | found at findagrave.com Eva Marshal Birth: 1203 Pembroke, Wales Death: 1246, Wales Eva Marshal, Baroness Abergavenny was a Cambro-Norman noblewoman and the wife of the powerful Marcher lord William de Braose, 10th Baron Abergavenny. She was the granddaughter of Strongbow and Aoife of Leinster. She held de Braose lands and castles in her own right following the public hanging of her husband by the orders of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Wales. Eva was born in 1203, in Pembroke Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales, the fifth daughter and tenth child of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke. Her paternal grandparents were John Marshal and Sibyl of Salisbury. Her maternal grandparents were Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, known to history as Strongbow and Aoife of Leinster. Eva and her sisters were described as being handsome, high-spirited girls. From 1207 to 1212, Eva and her family lived in Ireland. Sometime before 1221, she married Marcher lord William de Braose, who in June 1228 became the 10th Baron Abergavenny, and by whom she had four daughters. William was the son of Reginald de Braose and his first wife Grecia de Briwere. He was much hated by the Welsh who called him Gwilym Ddu or Black William. Eva's husband, Baron Abergavenny was publicly hanged by Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Wales on 2 May 1230 after being discovered in the Prince's bedchamber together with his wife Joan, Lady of Wales. Several months later, Eva's eldest daughter Isabella married the Prince's son, Dafydd ap Llywelyn, as their marriage contract had been signed prior to Baron Abergavenny's death. Prince Llywelyn wrote to Eva shortly after the execution, offering his apologies, explaining that he had been forced to order the hanging due to the insistence by the Welsh barons. He concluded his letter by adding that he hoped the execution would not affect their business dealings. Following her husband's execution, Eva held de Braose lands and castles in her own right. She is listed as holder of Totnes in 1230, which she held until her death. It is recorded on the Close Rolls (1234-1237) that Eva was granted 12 marks by King Henry III of England to strengthen Hay Castle. She had gained custody of Hay as part of her dower. She died in 1246 at the age of forty-three. Eva was the direct ancestress of Anne Boleyn, Mary Boleyn, and Jane Seymour; and she has numerous descendants in the 21st century. | 4890 | found at findagrave.com Lady Constance De Beverley Knollys Birth: 1316 Pontefract West Yorkshire, England Death: unknown North Mymms Hertfordshire, England The Knollys were living in the City of London, the Year of Our Lord, Thirteen Hundred and Eighty-One and her husband, Sir Robert Knollys was a moderately wealthy person. While he was on an expedition out of the country. His wife, Lady Constance Knollys, became annoyed that light industry was being built very close to her property so she bought up the land to use as an extension to her home and to plant a rose garden. Between her two pieces of property was a main road. This presented somewhat of a problem, so she to built a small foot bridge over the road linking her two buildings. Unfortunately, she failed to get planning permission to build the bridge, so the London City council called a meeting to discuss the issue... because Constance Knollys, husband, Sir Robert Knollys, was a very powerful person, the council decided that the bridge can remain, but a fine should be imposed. There final decision was that a red rose was to be presented yearly to the Lord Mayor. Sir Robert died in 1407, and left this house on Seething Lane to the Church. The garden that remains in Seething Lane is modern, being a left over from the construction of the nearby Trinity House, built in the 1920. It is believed this helped bring back to life the Knollys Rose ceremony in 1924. There is a project to renovate the rose garden, because the Ceremony is now an integral part of the heritage of the site. Long may the roses bloom there.
