Death: 1 Jun 1704 (aged 7071) Stafford County, Virginia, USA Burial: Alexander Cemetery, King George, King George County, Virginia, USA Memorial #: 130424801 Bio: Robert Alexander (1633-1704) was the son of John Alexander and Catherine (Graham) Alexander. In October of 1659 when he was about 26 years old, his father filed the paperwork to establish a plantation named Caledon. Robert Alexander inherited the plantation in 1677, after his father passed away. A book entitled the "Annals of Alexandria" noted that Robert Alexander also inherited the upper part of the Howson Patent tract from his father, and left it to his two young sons named Robert and Charles in 1704.Robert Alexander's brother named Philip Alexander, inherited the lower part of the Howson Patent tract. Philip Alexander had two sons, named Robert and Philip. Sixty acres of the lower part of the Howson Patent land were used about 70 years later, to found the city of Alexandria in July of 1749. The land grant for the city of Alexandria, was made by Captain Philip Alexander (1704-1753) and his cousin John Alexander (1711-1763). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandria%2C_Virginia A biography written for Robert Alexander's father provides some information about the Howson Patent tract, and the founding of Alexandria, VA. http://www.JohnAlexanderNSDAR.org/bio.html ***PLANTATION HISTORY The Caledon Plantation house had a lovely view of the Potomac River. The outline of the foundation of the plantation house, is within view of the family cemetery. The plantation might have been informally established as early as 1653, when Robert Alexander's father immigrated to Virginia. The plantation's cemetery was said to have been founded by 1657. The plantation was formally established by 1659, under the name of Caledon Plantation. "Caledonia" was the Latin word used by the Roman Empire to describe the Scottish Highlands, and its people were called "Caledonii" or Picts. Around 1700, Robert Alexander renamed the Caledon Plantation, and called it Salisbury. The county name changed several times, over the years. The plantation site was originally located in Westmoreland County, of the Virginia Colony. In 1664 the same area became part of Stafford County. By 1777 King George County had taken on its modern boundaries, to include the Salisbury Plantation. The plantation fell within the boundaries of St. Paul's Parish, of the Episcopalian Church. The river which was nearby was originally called the Patowmeck River, but it is now known as the Potomac River. The plantation was protected by a small promontory of land jutting out into the river, which gave it shelter from storms coming in off the Chesapeake Bay or the Atlantic Ocean. The promontory appears to have been located east of "PoPt Cr" on the attached map of 1670. "PoPt Cr" might have been an abbreviation for Pope Point Creek.***CEMETERY HISTORY The Alexander Cemetery is located at one of the earliest settlements for any Alexander family in America. Three cemetery surveys can be found online for it. 1) WPA SURVEY OF 1937A cemetery survey conducted in 1937 listed only three gravestones: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/kinggeorge/cemeteries/alexander01.txt 2) MAGAZINE ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN 1903 The WPA survey mentioned above refers to pages 315 and 316 in Volume 10 of "The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography" of 1903: http://books.google.com/books?id=jlc_AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA315&lpg=PA315&dq=Here+lies+the+body+of+Sarah+Alexander&source=bl&ots=VPJiQhj7S9&sig=MgFX7zdrkwqAgZZIDtRx9SaXroQ&hl=en&sa=X&ei=VtqYU5H8BtKVyATCyYGAAQ&ved=0CCIQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Here%20lies%20the%20body%20of%20Sarah%20Alexander&f=false 3) BOOK PUBLISHED IN 1962 An ebook link below mentions this cemetery:"ALEXANDER FAMILY CEMETERY AT SALISBURY. A word of appreciation is also due to J. Benjamin Chrismond for traveling to the cemetery, taking photos, and documenting its status. ***CURRENT STATUS OF CEMETERY AND PLANTATIONAs of 1903, only three grave markers were visible in this cemetery -- Captain Philip Alexander (1704-1753), his wife named Sarah (Hooe) Alexander, and their young son named Philip Alexander. Many colonial era graves in America were marked with simple field stones. The field stones were often not inscribed, or they were inscribed only with initials and the year of death. The inscriptions on many colonial era gravestones have now faded and worn away. The Salisbury Plantation was sold outside of the Alexander family, after all of the family members who lived there had either passed on, or moved away. The sale of the property was said to have occurred many years before the Civil War began in 1861. Eventually the colonial era house fell into a state of disrepair, and was abandoned entirely. In 1962, a manuscript written by Hugh Roy Stuart reported that five generations of Alexanders were interred at the Alexander Cemetery at the Salisbury Plantation. In 1974, a large portion of the land of the Salisbury Plantation was graciously donated to the state of Virginia, in order that it could become part of Caledon State Park. The land now provides sanctuary and habitat for bald eagles. The remains of the Alexander Cemetery, are now part of a privately owned farm. *** Gravesite Details No visible headstone. | 465 | -- pictures at findagrave.com -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- found at findagrave.com on 5/12/2020 Kenneth Mackenzie Birth: unknown Death: 6 Jun 1568 Highland, Scotland Burial: Beauly Priory, Beauly, Highland, Scotland Memorial #: 123961265 Bio: Kenneth Mackenzie, traditionally reckoned 10th of Kintail and nicknamed Coinneach na Cuirc (or "Kenneth of the Whittle"), was a Highland chief, head of the Clan Mackenzie, who flourished in the turbulent Scottish politics of the mid-16th century. Kenneth was the only son of John Mackenzie, 9th of Kintail (d.1561) and Elizabeth, the daughter of John Grant of Grant. In 1539 he was tenant of Little Skattil and Bawblair and, by a charter dated 24 April 1543, his father resigned to him and his wife part of the lordship of Kintail and the lands of Mekill Braan. Having succeeded his father in 1561, Kenneth was one of the Highland Chiefs who met Mary, Queen of Scots, at Inverness in 1562 and helped her to obtain possession of Inverness Castle, from which she had been excluded by Alexander Gordon, the governor. Thereafter, he appears to have retired from public life. An Act of the Privy Council of 21 May 1562 records that Kenneth delivered up to the Queen Mary Macleod, the heiress of Harris and Dunvegan, who had somehow found herself in his custody. The Act held him harmless against any proceedings by James Macdonald of Dunnyveg and the Glens, the legal guardian of Mary Macleod, who had previously demanded her return. Kenneth married in 1538 Lady Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl, by Lady Janet Campbell, daughter of the Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll. His own children also made very advantageous marriages: Colin Cam Mackenzie, who succeeded him, married Barbara Grant, daughter of John Grant of Grant. Roderick Mackenze of Redcastle married Florence, daughter of Robert Mor Munro, 15th Baron of Foulis Janet married, first, Aeneas Macdonald of Glengarry and, secondly, Alexander Chisholm of Chisholm. Catherine married Alexander Ross of Balnagown and died on 12 April 1592. Agnes married (contract 11 May 1567) Lachlan Mor Mackintosh of Mackintosh. Margaret married (contract 24 November 1556) Walter Innes, son and heir of John Innes of Inverbreckie, and died in June 1570. Elizabeth married Walter Urquhart of Cromarty. Marjory married (contract 30 May 1574) Robert Munro, son and heir of Robert Munro of Foulis. Kenneth died at Killin on 6 June 1568 and was buried at Beauly Priory. | 475 | ----------------------------------------------- See Misc-Docs folder. ----------------------------------------------- See pension application under Military ----------------------------------------------- found at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~fams/genealogy/durrenberger/nti03411.htm Notes for Andrew DERRYBERRY Biography Andrew Derryberry was one of seven "first-generation" Derryberry men who appear in the records of Burke Co., NC prior to 1800. Of the seven, Andrew is the only one for whom we have a reasonably precise estimate of birth year, namely 1765. We do not know when his parents migrated from New Jersey or Pennsylvania to North Carolina, but it likely occurred sometime in the 1760's, and so we cannot be sure where he was born. He first appears in records in 1778 as a chain carrier on land surveys for his (presumed) older brothers Michael and John in the Silver Creek area of Burke Co. He would have been a young teenager at the time, which was not unusual for chain carriers. He fought in local campaigns in the Revolutionary War starting in 1781, when he was about 16 years of age. His statement describing his service, from his Revolutionary War pension application and dated 14 Oct 1832 at Perry Co., TN, is as follows. "In the year 1781 in the winter of said year he volunteered his services to fight the Indians being then a citizen of the County of Burke in the State of North Carolina and attached himself to a company or party commanded by Thomas Kenedy and marched to a point in said County by the name of John Davidson's Fort where he remained one month guarding the same. From thence he was marched to another point in said County known by the name of 'Warford Fort' where he remained for about two weeks guarding the same [& two weeks after Cornwallas]. He then returned home to his residence, and there remained until the 25th day of August in the year following (1782), when he ... enlisted in the Army of the United States with Captain Alexander [Brevard] and served in the Regiment of the Continental line under the following named officers: Colonel Archibald Lytle - Major __ McRee and Major __ Blount, Captain Peter McCourts - Fort 1 Lieutenant and __ Dickson second Lieutenant-- Charles Sturdevan orderly Sergeant and __ Dunigan - Sergeant. He enlisted at Ramsaw's Mill Lincoln County in the State of North Carolina. From thence he was marched to Bacons Bridge on the Ashley River seven miles below the same he reached head quarters and joined the Regular Army where he remained four months. From thence he was marched to James' Island between the Rivers Stone Oak and Ashley where we remained for six months. From thence he was marched to what was called the ten mile house leading from Charlestown to Camden where on the fifth day of July he was discharged..." [Source: Revolutionary Pension File, app. W10312.] The above statement was given by Andrew, who stated his age about 67 at the time, and was signed with a mark. The Justice of the Peace who took the statement, James Williams, stated on the same date that Andrew "lived within a few hundred yards of my house, that he is so very old as to be altogether unable to get to Court to file his declaration, that he believes the said Deberry [sic] to be as old as he states himself to be in his declaration, and that he is generally known and reputed to be a Revolutionary soldier...." North Carolina Secretary of State William Hill stated on 26 Mar 1833 that "it appears from the muster rolls of the Continental Line of this State in the Revolutionary War that Andrew Derreberry a private soldier in Capt. Bacot's Company of the 10th Regiment enlisted in 1782 for the term of 18 months, and that nothing more is said of him on said Rolls." Militia returns from Thomas Kennedy's company from the period 1780-82 describe him as age 16, 5 foot 6 inches tall, light hair, grey eyes, and fair complexion. Following his discharge in 1783 Andrew seems to have returned to Burke Co., where in 1787 he was deeded land on Silver Creek from Jacob Hipps. This property was probably close if not adjacent to that granted to Michael and John Derryberry in 1782, the surveying of which he participated in as described above. The 1790 census shows him in the Silver Creek area near widow Anne, with a single female in his household. It is likely that Andrew had married prior to 1790, possibly to a daughter of Jacob Hipps given the land record, but had no surviving children by 1790. This first wife evidently died, since he married Sarah Rucker in 1795, to whom he remained married for the rest of his life. A former next-door neighbor of Sarah's from Burke Co., Christopher Pearson, stated in 1850 that he recalled the marriage, she having borrowed a mare from him to ride to the home of Justice of the Peace John Hall for the ceremony. Andrew appears in the 1800 census in Burke Co., and on the tax rolls for the Silver Creek area for the period 1793-1808. In 1804 he deeded 100 acres of land to his probable brother Daniel, and on 10 Jul 1807 he signed a document as part of a twelve-member jury tasked with laying out the dower of Delila, widow of Mathias Hipps. Also signing was the Christopher Pearson mentioned above. Given that he disappears from Burke Co. records after the 1808 tax list, it seems likely he migrated west to Tennessee about 1808, settling by 1812 in Warren Co., TN, where he appears on the tax list there along with probable brothers Jacob and Michael. Daniel does not appear on that list but may have been living there as well, since he seems to have left Burke Co. the year after Andrew. In the 1820 census, there are two entries for an Andrew Derryberry in Warren Co., TN, but they appear to be duplicate entries for this same man. He signed the petition for a new jail for Warren Co. that same year, along with John and Michael Derryberry (both probably sons of Jacob). Sometime between 1820 and 1830, Andrew and Daniel both moved west to Perry Co., TN, with Andrew settling near Decaturville, which in 1845 would become Decatur Co., and Daniel settling near Lobelville. By this time Andrew was getting on in years, and applied for a pension for his Revolutionary War service to help him in his old age, as noted above. He sought help from two famous Tennessee Congressmen in his efforts. The first was David "Davy" Crockett, "King of the Wild Frontier" and Representative for Tennessee's 9th District for 1827-31, and 12th District for 1833-35. "On motion of Mr. Crockett [on 19 Feb 1828], Revolved, That the Committee on Military Pensions be instructed to inquire into the expediency of placing Andrew Derryberry, a soldier of the Revolution, on the pension roll." (Source: Congressional Edition, vol. 168, p. 317.) Rep. Crockett made several similar attempts over the next several years, most or all of which were tabled. Another note, from 6 Apr 1830, states, "Mr. Bockee, from the Committee on Military Pensions, made an unfavorable report on the cases of ... Andrew Derryberry, ..., and others, Revolutionary soldiers, of the county of Hunterdon, in the State of New Jersey. Ordered, That the said reports do lie on the table." (Source: Congressional Edition, vol. 194, p. 507.) The second was James K. Polk, later the 11th US President and Representative for Tennessee's 6th District for 1825-33 and 9th District for 1833-39. Entry from 16 Dec 1831, "Handed J. L. Edwards Esqr. Pension office, letter of Andrew Derryberry of Perry County, desiring to know what decision had been made on his application for a pension, the papers for which were forwarded to the War Dept. some time since." And from 19 Dec 1831, "Enclosed answer of J. L. Edwards, that the application was rejected in Decr. 1827, and papers withdrawn by Col. Crockett in Feby. 1828." ("James K. Polk and His Constituents", contributed by John Spencer Bassett to "American Historical Review" vol. XXVII no. 1, Oct 1922.) The pension was at long last granted starting 4 Mar 1833 at the rate of $39.27 per annum, with arrears from the two previous years also paid totaling $78.54. This was for 11 months 24 days of service as a private in Cpt. Kennedy's company, Col. Lytle's regiment, NC Militia. The pension certificate was actually issued 6 Jun 1833 and sent to Andrew's son, Andrew Jr., of Perryville. Following Andrew Sr.'s death in 1839, his widow Sarah would receive a widow's pension at the same rate starting 4 Mar 1848 and sent to D. E. A. McElrath of Decaturville. (See Sarah's notes for further information from her widow's pension.) The Perry Co. tax list for 1837 lists an A. J. Derryberry, which could refer either to this man, or to his son Andrew Jr., since both were alive and of adult age at the time. That raises the possibility that Andrew Sr. had a middle initial of J., but this does not appear on any other documents, and it is possible it referred to, or was misread from, "Jr." Thus he is shown without middle initial here. No trade is mentioned on any document, but it is likely he was a farmer. His birth, marriage and death dates all come from statements of himself or his widow in the pension file above; thanks to that pension file, we know more details of Andrew's life than any of the other first-generation Derryberrys. It is likely that he died in Perry Co., where he was apparently still living in 1837. Shortly before his death, he appointed his son, Andrew Derryberry Jr. of Warren Co., TN, his attorney. His place of burial is, surprisingly, unknown. He and Sarah had about 11 children, of whom six sons and one daughter are known or strongly suspected. See below for further details. His Revolutionary pension statement notes that Andrew was born about 1765 and that he had lived, while in Burke Co., in proximity to the Pearsons. The Pearsons lived in 13th Company, the same area where the Andrew found in the 1790 census lived. This indicates that the Andrew in the 1790 census is the same man who served in the Revolutionary War and later lived in Perry and Madison Cos., TN. J. may refer to Andrew's son Andrew Derryberry Jr. However, given that Andrew Sr. was still alive in 1837, it is possible that A. J. refers to Andrew Sr., making his own middle initial J. This district was in the southwest part of the county, near Decaturville and on the Henderson Co. line. It is in modern-day Decatur Co.] In 1838, Andrew assigned several properties in Warren Co. to a Thomas Hopkins. These are grants no. 5796, 5797, 5798, and 5799, dated 25 Jan 1838. Probable Children Based on the various census records, Andrew seems to have had as many as 10 children. Five sons are known or strongly suspected, while the names of four of five daughters are unfortunately unknown. We have the 1800, 1820 and 1830 censuses to account for children. He was enumerated twice in 1820, and the listing of children, particularly sons, is inconsistent between the two. It is entirely possible that Daniel and/or Michael C. were gone from the household by 1820, leaving room for probable son John, although the age estimates don't fit perfectly. Possible children: son Daniel (<10 in 1800, 18-26 in 1820); b. 1796? son Michael C. (<10 in 1800, 18-26 in 1820); b. 1799 dau (16-26 in 1820); b. 1800? dau (16-26 in 1820); b. 1802? son Andrew Jr. (16-18 in 1820, 20-30 in 1830); b. 1804 dau (16-26 in 1820, 20-30 in 1830 Thomas hh); b. 1806? son Jesse (10-16 in 1820, 20-30 in 1830); b. 1808 son Thomas (<10 in 1820, 15-20 in 1830 enumerated separately); b. 1811? dau (<10 in 1820, 10-15 in 1830 Thomas hh?); perhaps the J. J. b. 1810 (see below)? dau Minerva (<10 in 1820, 10-15 in 1830 Thomas hh?); b. 1819 The identities of the daughters (probably 5 altogether) are all currently unknown as mentioned above. However, one of them may be the J. J. Derryberry age 50 living alone in Decatur Co., TN in the 1860 census. Andrew Jr. and Jesse R. are probably the two younger men in the 1830 census. 1860 US census, Dist. 4, Decatur Co., TN (P.O. Decaturville) J. J. Dereberry [fem], age 50, [occ. illegible], $100/400, b. TN In Madison Co., TN deed book 1, pp. 478-479 is found a record of a land sale from John Chisum, on which a "Harvy Derryberry" was a witness, dated 1830-1. No "Harvey" Derryberrys are known from that time period, so it is most likely that "Harvy" was a mistranscription of "Henry", and that record is attributed to Henry W. Derryberry of Maury Co. (son of Jacob Derryberry and Margaret Long), and not someone from Andrew's family. Two indentures made by Casper Culp on 5/12/1764, each conveying 225acres to Matthew Patton and to James Patton, respectively, arerecorded in Mecklenburg, NC, records. He was Hans Casper Kolb. Hans Casper settled in Bucks County, PA and owned several properties in Pennsylvania, but had moved to Anson County South Carolina by 1753. Some researchers had decided that he was a son of Peter Kolb and a grandson of Dielman Kolb of Wolfsheim; however, he came with Alexander Mack, leader of the German Baptist Brethren and Hans Casper is recorded as being part of that group at Schwarzenau. So, he was a member of the Brethren church and not Mennonite and pretty surely not a descendant of Dielman Kolb of Wolfsheim. With our recent DNA tests, we have had confirmation that the DNA of the Hans Casper Kolb descendants does not match the patterns of the descendants of Dielman Kolb. We also now know that there are many Kolb families who are not related to each other." - Glenn Landis Hans Casper Kolb (Kulp) (1692-1770) born in Schwarzenau, Palatinate, Germany arrived in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on September 11 or 15, 1729 aboard the ship "Allen" which had sailed from Rotterdam on July 7th 1729. He immigrated along with Rev. Alexander Mack who had founded the German Baptist Brethren in 1708 in Schwarzenau. Also listed on the ship's manifest is Anna (Alcordas?) (Felicitas?) (Phillis?) Kulp (1701/15-1764) I and others believe that this may have been Hans Casper Kolb's wife. Other evidence suggests that in fact, Anna Phyllis may have been a sister. There is recorded a Phyllis Kolb living in New Castle, Delaware at the time Hans Casper was residing in Pennsylvania. Hans Casper Kolb (who signed some documents Kulp) eventually settled on land grants in South Carolina about 1754 though part of the land was in North Carolina at that time. He was a brother of James McKinney and both had come to present Chester County from Virginia. In youth, the two brothers had been hired by a horse drover to help drive horses to South Carolina. Later, they entered into the business on their own and finally settled on Fishing Creek. William McKinney's father was a Scotsman that had come to America from England and settled in Virginia. William McKinney seems to have been a very highly educated man and he became a much sought after legal advisor of the area, a "backwoods lawyer," when the closest such was in Charlestown, some two hundred miles and a week away. His name is found in many deeds and estates of the area and, in fact, many of the originals were penned by him. The home he built on Fishing Creek was marked on old maps as close to (Upper) Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church and the home stood until after the middle of this century when it was demolished for building material. On 11 August 1774, William McKinney bought 100 acres of land from Christopher Strait that included the church, adjacent to the former land of Hans Casper Culp, so he actually owned the most famous landmark of Chester County today! William was hired to a horse drover who took horses to South Carolina. Later he carried horses to South Carolina and sold them on his own account. He finally settled in SC and purchased a tract of land about a mile west of Fishing Creek, nine miles from Chester village, the county seat of Chester Dist. It is thought that William married Barbary Culp a German lady in about 1750/2. They lived on a large farm with a very large spring on it in Craven, South Carolina. In a deed dated September 9, 1771 in Chester District, James and Agnes Ferguson sold 140 acres to William McKinney on the north side of Fishing Creek. Apparently they had bought or obtained land in SC. The 140 acres sold were part of a land grant of 30 acres on Fishing Creek to James Ferguson dated December 12, 1768. Barbara Culp was probably born in Pennsylvania in about 1733 the daughter of Hans Caspar Culp and Anna Phillis or Felicitas. It is recorded that Barbara Culp had been partially scalped in one of the South Carolina Indian raids but had survived and lived to get married and rear a family. Barbara (Culp) McKinney is best remembered as having been the victim of a Cherokee Indian attack in August of 1761, during which she was abducted, tomahawked, scalped, and left for dead. She miraculously survived to bear more children. There have been many pages written into history books about the incident, but the best by far is in Elizabeth F. Ellett's "Women of the American Revolution", Vol III. That account was written by Daniel Green Stinson (1793-1879), the great histographer of Chester County. After Barbara (Culp) McKinney's horrible experience, she wore black silken caps to hide her baldness and wounds. My late great-grandmother, Margaret (McFadden) Edwards, a great-granddaughter of Barbara's, owned one of those caps, but its whereabouts is now unknown. [This comes from "Captain Bill Book III" by Robert J. Stevens.....page 163-4] Her date of death in present Chester County, SC is not known, but sometime after 1782, when she was named as administratrix in her husband's will. She is buried in Old Richardson's Church, or Burnt Meeting House Cemetery, beside her husband, both graves unmarked. The little settlement of white settlers had spread over the rich lands on Fishing and Rocky Creeks, the dwellings being gathered into clusters, of which there were some three or four within a short distance of each other.? Not a great way from Steel?s and Taylor?s Forts was another settlement consisting of a few families, among which were those of William McKenny and his brother James.? These lived near Fishing Creek.? In the summer of 1761, sixteen Indians, with some squaws of the Cherokee tribe, took up their abode for several weeks near what is called Simpson?s Shoals, for the purpose of hunting and fishing during the hot months.? In August, the two McKennys being absent on a journey to Camden, William?s wife, Barbara, was left alone with several young children.? One day she saw the Indian women running towards her house in great haste, followed by the men.? She had no time to offer resistance; the squaws seized her and the children, pulled them into the house, and shoved them behind the door, where they immediately placed themselves on guard, pushing back the Indians as fast as they tried to force their way in, and uttering the most fearful outcries.? Mrs. McKenny concluded it was their intention to kill her, and expected her fate every moment.? The assistance rendered by the squaws, whether given out of compassion for a lonely mother, or in return for kindness shown them, --proved effectual for her protection till the arrival of one of the chiefs, who drew his long knife and drove off the savages.? The mother, apprehending another attack, went to some of her neighbors and entreated them to come and stay with her.? Robert Brown and Joanna his wife, Sarah Ferguson, her daughter Sarah and two sons, and a young man named Michael Melbury, came in compliance with her request, and took up their quarters in the house.? The next morning Mrs. McKenny ventured out alone to milk her cows.? It had been her practice heretofore to take some of the children with her, and she could not explain why she went alone this time, though she was not free from apprehension, it seemed to be so by a special ordering of Providence.? While she was milking, the Indians crept towards her on their hands and knees; she heard not their approach, nor knew anything till they seized her.? Sensible at once of all the horror of her situation, she made no effort to escape, but promised to go quietly with them.? They then set off towards the house, holding her fast by the arm.? She had the presence of mind to walk as far off as possible from the Indian who held her, expecting Melbury to fire as they approached her dwelling.? As they came up, he fired, wounding the one who held Mrs. McKenny; she broke from his hold and ran, and another Indian pursued and seized her.? At this moment she was just at her own door, which John Ferguson imprudently opening that she might enter, the Indians shot him dead as he presented himself.? His mother ran to him and received another shot in her thigh, of which she died in a few days.? Melbury, who saw that all their lives depended on prompt action, dragged them from the door, fastened it, and repairing to the loft, prepared for a vigorous defense.? There were in all, five guns. Sarah Ferguson loaded for him while he kept up a continual fire, aiming at the Indians wherever one could be seen. ? Determined to effect their object of forcing an entrance, some of the savages came very near the house, keeping under cover of an outhouse in which Brown and his wife had taken refuge, not being able on the alarm, to get into the house.? They had crept into a corner and were crouched there close to the boarding.? One of the Indians, coming up, leaned against the outside, separated from them only by a few boards, the crevices between which probably enabled them to see him.? Mrs. Brown proposed to take a sword that lie by them and run the savage through the body, but her husband refused; he expected death, he said, every moment, and did not wish to go out of the world having his hands crimsoned with the blood of any fellow creature.? "Let me die in peace", were his words, "with all the world".? Joanna, though in the same peril, could not respond to the charitable feeling.? "If I am to die", she said, "I should like first to send some of the redskins on their journey.? But we are not so sure we have to die don?t you hear the crack of Melbury?s rifle?? He holds the house.? I warrant you, that redskin looked awfully scared as he leaned against the corner here.? We could have done it in a moment."?? Mrs. McKenny, meanwhile, having failed to get into her house, had been again seized by the Indians, and desperately regardless of here own safety, was doing all in her power to help her besieged friends.? She would knock the priming out of the guns carried by the savages, and when they presented them to fire would throw them up, so that the discharge might prove harmless.? She was often heard to say, afterwards, that all fear had left her, and she thought only of those within the building, for she expected for herself neither deliverance nor mercy.? Melbury continued to fire whenever one of the enemy appeared; they kept themselves, however, concealed, for the most part, behind trees or the outhouse.? Several were wounded by his cool and well-directed shots, and at length, tired of the contest, the Indians retreated, carrying Mrs. McKenny with them.? She now resisted with all her strength, preferring instant death to the more terrible fate of a captive in the hands of the fierce Cherokees.? Her refusal to go forward irritated her captors, and when they had dragged her about half a mile, near a rock upon the plantation now occupied by John Culp, she received a second blow with the tomahawk which stretched her insensible upon the ground.? When after some time consciousness returned, she found herself lying upon the rock, to which she had been dragged from the spot where she fell.? She was stripped naked, and her scalp had been taken off.? By degrees the knowledge of her condition, and the desire of obtaining help came upon her.? She lifted up her head, and looking around, saw the wretches who had so cruelly mangled her, pulling ears of corn from a field near, to roast for their meal.? She laid her head quickly down again, well knowing that if they saw her alive, they would not be slack in coming for finish the work of death.? Thus she lay motionless till all was silent, and she found they were gone; then with great pain and difficulty she dragged herself back to the house.? It may be imagined with what feelings the unfortunate woman was received by her friends and children, and how she met the bereaved mother wounded unto death, who had suffered for her attempt to save others.? One of the blows received by Mrs. McKenny had made a deep wound in her back; the others were upon her head.? When her wounds had been dressed as well as was practicable, Melbury and the others assisted her to a bed.? Brown and his brave wife having then joined the little garrison, preparations were made for defense in case of another attack? the guns were all loaded and placed ready for use, and committing the house to the care of the Browns, Melbury sallied forth, rifle in hand, and took to the woods.? He made his way directly, and as quickly as possible, to Taylor?s Fort at Landsford.? The men there, informed of what had happened, immediately set about preparations for pursuing the treacherous Indians who had thus violated the implied good faith of neighbors by assailing an unprotected woman.? The next morning a number of the, well armed, started for the Indian encampment at the shoals.? The Cherokees were gone; but the indignant pursuers took up the trail, which they followed as far as Broad River.? Here they saw the Indians on the other side, but did not judge it expedient to pursue them further, or provoke an encounter. ??? In the meantime William McKenny had reason for uneasiness in his absence from home; for he knew that the Indians had been at the shoals some time, nor was the deceitful and cruel character of the tribe unknown to him.? He was accustomed long afterwards to tell of the warning conveyed to him while on his road to Camden; two nights in succession he dreamed of losing his hat, and looking upon this as an omen of evil, became so uncomfortable that he could proceed no further.? Taking one of the horses out of the wagon, he mounted and rode homeward at his utmost speed.? Reaching his own house a little after dark, he was admitted by the women as soon as he made himself known.? The scene that greeted his eyes was one truly heart-rending; the slain man, John Ferguson, still lay there, and in the same apartment the dying mother and Mrs. McKenny, more like one dead than living, mangled almost past recognition- the blood still gushing from her wounds, and drenching the pillows on which she lay.? No fictitious tragedy could surpass the horrors of this in real life.? Days later a group of men from the area trailed the Indians within miles of the Cherokee Nation. One of the men, Thomas Garett, killed the Indian that scalped Mrs. McKinney and actually found her scalp in the Indian?s shot bag.? The wounds in Mrs. McKenny?s head never healed entirely; but continued to break out occasionally, so that the blood flowing from them stained the bed at night, and sometimes fragments of bone came off; nevertheless, she lived many years afterwards and bore several children.? She was at the time with child, and in about three months gave birth to a daughter-Hannah, afterwards married to John Stedman- living in Tennessee in 1827.? This child was plainly marked with a tomahawk and drops of blood, as if running down the side of her face.? The families of McKenny and McFadden residing on Fishing Creek, are descended from this Barbara McKenny; but most of her descendants have emigrated to the West.? The above-mentioned occurrence is narrated in a manuscript in the hand-writing of her grandson, Robert McFadden. ********** WILL OF CASPER KULP In the name of God, Amen, I Casper Kulp, Being weak of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God therefore, calling into mind the Mortality of my Body, knowing that it is appointed for all Men once for to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul unto the Hands of God who gave it and my Body for to be Buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executor and such worldly Goods as it hath pleased God to Bless me with in this Life I give and bequeath of in the following Manner Viz: First my Will is that all my lawful debts be paid.
