Below is an excerpt:

Sometime prior to September 21, 1691, John Davis married Mrs. Susannah Day, widow of **********
Solomon Day, of Stafford county, as on that date they conveyed to
George Brent two hundred acres of land previously owned by her former
husband. In 1694 John Davis had a Fairfax grant for 50 acres in Westmoreland
county ; and in 1696 one for 109 acres in Northumberland
county. Owing to the destruction of the early records of Stafford I
have not found John Davis' will, so cannot give date of his death and
names of his children ; but from our Bible records I get the name of his
son Thomas, b. August 1, 1693, and in the land grant records find mentioned
brothers William and John. Between 1722 and 1740 William
Davis had grants in Stafford and Prince William counties for about
1,250 acres of land, part of which adjoined that of brothers Thomas and
John. Thomas Davis was probably the second son of John and Susannah ********
Davis. Between 1725 and 1745 he was granted in Stafford and
Prince William counties about 1,550 acres of land ; and in some of the
patents he is styled " Mr. Thomas Davis." In 1737 he purchased from
his brother-in-law, Edwin Fielding, some land in Northumberland
county, and possibly owned other land by purchase.

Notes for Michael DERRYBERRY

Biography

Michael Derryberry was one of seven "first-generation" Derryberry men who appear in the records of Burke Co., NC prior
to 1800. Although the best the census records can tell us is that he was born before 1774, we know that by 1790 he had
six children, and in 1796 he had one other poll (male about age 21 or more) in his household, suggesting his oldest son
was born about 1775. We may estimate therefore that Michael was probably born in the early 1750's, and probably in New
Jersey. Furthermore, he last appears in the 1820 census and in an 1823 land record, suggesting he died between
1823-1830, probably in Warren Co., TN where he lived at the time.

Since there were several men of the same name, care must be taken to distinguish records referring to this Michael from
those referring to others. Given our estimate of his age, he could not have been the Michael Terenbargener who appears
on the 1770 Rowan Co., NC tax list; rather, that Michael was probably this man's father, who by 1778 was elderly and
referred to as "old Terryberry." In addition, two younger Michael Derryberrys, both probable nephews, can also
potentially be confused with this man. One was Michael Derryberry, son of Jacob Derryberry; he was born about 1785 and
moved out of Burke Co. before he could appear on any records there. (However, he did co-migrate with this Michael, and
they were later distinguished by "Sr." and "Jr.") The other was Michael Derreberry, son of Hannah Derreberry, who was
born about 1778 and remained in Burke Co.; although he appears in the 1800 census, he probably did not marry until
about 1798, by which time this Michael had left North Carolina. Thus, all references to a Michael Derryberry in Burke
Co. during the period 1778-1796, and all references outside of North Carolina during the period 1796-1805, are taken to
refer to this man.

Michael moved frequently during his lifetime, often joining and splitting with other Derryberrys along the way. In
1778, he and probable brother John entered adjacent parcels of land on Silver Creek in Burke Co., and both parcels were
surveyed in 1780 and granted in 1782. Michael seems to have moved on soon afterward, entering land near another
probable brother, Jacob Derryberry, on Gunpowder Creek (present-day Caldwell Co.) This land was not granted until
1794, but Michael was probably living on it in 1790 since he is adjacent to Jacob on the 1790 census for Burke Co.

Two records from 1795 indicate Michael may have returned to the Silver Creek area, or at least purchased land there.
In 1793 he was assigned land on the head of Silver Creek by John Sellers, and this land was surveyed and granted in
1795. Also in 1795, he was part of a jury (also including several Sellers) ordered to mark out a road from Cain Creek
to "Farris' old place" through the Whiteside Settlement. During this same period, Michael does not appear on tax lists
from the Silver Creek area.

In late 1795 or early 1796, Michael left North Carolina for Russell Co., VA, where he joined probable brother Adam.
The two men appear on the 1796 tax list there, but they did not stay long after that, instead following the Wilderness
Road into Kentucky. Adam went to Garrard Co., and Michael went to Warren Co., KY, where he is on the 1797 tax list.
Oddly, Michael seems to have backtracked somewhat, since he appears on the 1799 tax list for Grainger Co., TN (probably
modern-day Claiborne Co.), which is considerably to the east of where he had been in 1797. Since his probable future
son-in-law Peter Maricle was also on the Grainger Co. list, it is possible Michael moved there due to family or
friendship connections.

By 1804, however, he had returned to Warren Co., KY, where he appears on the tax lists from 1804-1807. His eldest son
John had married there in 1800, so it is possible Michael decided he preferred the area in which John had settled.
Also for the period 1805-1807, his nephew Michael Derryberry (son of Jacob) also settled in this area. The two men
were distinguished by "Sr." for this man and "Jr." for his nephew.

Michael does not appear on the 1810 census for Kentucky, suggesting he had left for Tennessee. A Michael Derryberry
Jr. (probably his nephew) entered land in Warren Co., TN in 1808, and two Michaels appear on the 1812 tax list for
Warren Co., TN, and on the 1820 census for Warren Co., TN. This suggests that both Michaels may have left Kentucky for
Tennessee about the same time, joining Jacob Derryberry (father of Michael Jr. and probable brother of this Michael),
as well as other probable brothers Andrew and Daniel, in Warren Co., TN.

Michael appears on several land records also including his probable son-in-law Peter Maricle, with the first known
entry in 1811 and the last in Sep 1823. He and his wife, whose name remains unknown, may have had at least 10
children: the 1790 census implies 3 sons and 3 daughters born by that time, plus later son Andrew (b. 1800) and
assumed several children born between 1790 and 1800. Of these, none are documented, and only four have been attributed
to him, all by association or by process of elimination.

Jacob Dereberry (1 male >16 yrs, 4 males <16 yrs, 3 females)
Michael Derebury (1 male >16 yrs, 3 males <16 yrs, 4 females)

It will be assumed, unless shown otherwise, that Michael's household in 1790 consisted of himself, a wife, 3 sons under
16 years of age, and 3 daughters.

Land entry 2194 (22 Aug 1795). Michael Derabery, 50 a on head of Silver Creek. Assigned to Michael Derryberry 27 Aug
1793 by John Sellers. Grant to Sellers from 1790 describes 50 a at head of Silver Creek joining lines of John Mackey's
upper land. Survey for Michael Derryberry 7 Mar 1795, 50 a at head of Silver Creek bounded by Sellers's line.
Certified: Peter Phillips and John Derryberry. [This John Derryberry may have been Michael's oldest son, John R.
Derryberry, who would have been about age 20 or 21.]

Court record, Jan 1795. Jury ordered to view and mark road from Cain Creek to Farris' old place, 2 mi through
Whiteside Settlement. Jury included Michael Derreberry.

Russell Co., VA Personal Property Tax Lists (Lower District):
1796, Adam Derryberry (2) and Michael Derryberry (2)

The above tax lists indicate that in 1796 Michael had in his household one other tithable member (male age 16-21
years). That must have been his son John R. In addition, because Michael joined Adam and the two left Virginia the
following year (neither appears in the 1797 VA tax lists), Adam was probably another brother of Michael's and Jacob's.
Michael stayed in Virginia only about a year, after which he appears in Warren Co., KY, with perhaps one year
intervening in Grainger Co., TN.

Warren Co., KY Tax Lists:
1797, Michael Derrybury
1803, John Derebery, Drakes Creek, from James Butler
1804, John Derryberrry, Drakes Creek, from James Butler
1804, Michael Derryberry, Drakes Creek, from William Beasley

1805, Michael Duberry, Drakes Creek, from Michael Duberry
1805, John Duberry, Drakes Creek, from James Butler
1806, John Durreberry, Barren River, from James Butler
1806, Michael Durreberry Sr., Barren River, from J. White
1806, Michael Durreberry Jr., Barren River, from Michael Durreberry
1807, John Derrybery, Drakes Creek, from James Butler
1807, Michael Derrybery Sr., Drakes Creek, from William Busby
1807, Michael Derrybery Jr., Drakes Creek, from self

It seems clear from the tax lists above that this Michael Derryberry (Sr.) purchased or received land from William
Beasley. Michael Sr., in turn, sold or transferred land to a Michael Jr., probably his nephew, in about 1805. He also
assigned land to James Butler who in turn passed it to Michael's son John R. Note that, according to secondary
sources, William Beasley married Mary Ann Farr, the sister of Margaret Farr who married William Lowe, and therefore
Michael's daughter-in-law's uncle. James Butler married William Lowe's daughter Charity and was therefore Michael's
daughter-in-law's brother-in-law.

The following land record from Logan Co., KY indicates that perhaps one of either Michael Sr. or Jr. still held this
same land on Drakes Creek in Kentucky by 1816.

Logan Co., KY Land Records:
William Lowe, Warren Co., and Thomas Hammond tr in Logan Co., being one half tr belonging to Lowe, lying on Drakes
Creek, tr adjoining John Armstrong and conditional line between Lowe and Michael Derryberry and William Smith, 87 a.
30 Sep 1816.

Warren Co., TN, land grant no. 8847 dated 6 Mar 1816, entered 16 May 1811, to Michael Derreberry and Peter Marracle,
assignees of David Ross (original warrant 19 Feb 1787). "Two hundred acres by survey bearing date the 20th day of June
1811 lying in Warren County, in the Second District on the waters of the Barren Fork of Collin River, and bounded as
follows to wit. Beginning at a walnut the north east corner of Michael Derreberry occupant claim, running thence west
forty chains crossing the creek to a post oak, thence south fifty chains to a white oak on the north bank of the creek,
thence east forty chains crossing the creek several times to a post oak, thence to the beginning, including Peter
Marracle and Michael Derreberry's improvements."

1812 Warren Co., TN tax list (Graham's list, pp. 8 and 9):
59. Micheal Derrebery [adjacent to Peter Mirecle]
...
83. Jacob Darebery
84. Micheal Derrebery [near Joel and Jarvis Starky]
92. Jas. Derreby

It seems likely that the Michael adjacent to Jacob was Jacob's son, while the Michael adjacent to Peter Mirecle was
Peter's father-in-law.

Michael Sr. is probably the following entry in the 1820 census, as his age is given as over 45 years and no children.
Entries in the 1830 and 1840 census clearly refer to Michael Jr. (see Michael Jr.'s notes for details).

1820 US census, Warren Co., TN
Michael Derryberry 000001 // 00001 (both Michael and wife age >45)

Warren Co., TN Deed Book D (in "Ansearchin' News" (TN Genealogical Society, Memphis), vol 26 no. 2, spring 1979):
"p. 383 - 17 Jan 1820: Thomas HOPKINS of Sullivan Co., Tn to John LEMON, 52 [acres] on the waters of Barren fork of
Collins River ... corner of William SMITH ... Michael DERREBERRY's line of his occupant claim. Witnesses: Robt.
FRENCH, Wmson C. HERBEN(?). Proven in. court by the subscribing witnesses 19 Oct 1820; registered 23 Apr 1823."

Michael also witnessed a land record related to his son-in-law Peter Maricle in Sep 1823 (see Peter's notes for
details). Michael does not appear in the 1830 census or after, and he probably died between 1823 and 1830 in Warren
Co., TN.

Probable children

Michael is shown here with four children. However, based on the early census records he probably had several others,
possibly as many as ten in all. Census records suggest children as follows.

son John R. (<16 in 1790, 16-21 in 1796, enumerated separately in 1820); b. 1775
dau (in 1790, not found in 1820); b. 1778

He may have had several other children born between 1789 and 1800, but they are all unaccounted for.

Southern Campaign American Revolution Pension Statements & Rosters
Pension application of Leonard Stringer R10267 f6VA
Transcribed by Will Graves 5/5/12
[Methodology: Spelling, punctuation and/or grammar have been corrected in some instances for ease of reading and to facilitate searches of the database. Where the meaning is not compromised by adhering to the spelling, punctuation or grammar, no change has been made. Corrections or additional notes have been inserted within brackets or footnotes. Blanks appearing in the transcripts reflect blanks in the original. A bracketed question mark indicates that the word or words preceding it represent(s) a guess by me. Only materials pertinent to the military service of the veteran and to contemporary events have been transcribed. Affidavits that provide additional information on these events are included and genealogical information is abstracted, while standard, 'boilerplate' affidavits and attestations related solely to the application, and later nineteenth and twentieth century research requests for information have been omitted. I use speech recognition software to make all my transcriptions. Such software misinterprets my southern accent with unfortunate regularity and my poor proofreading fails to catch all misinterpretations. Also, dates or numbers which the software treats as numerals rather than words are not corrected: for example, the software transcribes "the eighth of June one thousand eighty six" as "the 8th of June 1786." Please call errors or omissions to my attention.]
[Note: This file contains no copy of the application filed by the veteran. The only indication in the file of the contents of the application are reflected in the following letter:

War Dept. Pension Office.
Nov. 25, 1837.
Sir:
The declaration of Leonard Stringer has been examined. He alleges one tour of about two months and one tour of about three months as a Militia man of Virginia, and also two tours of service in driving wagons, and a soldier on board a vessel called the "Polly Hacker", Captain Parcels. Service as a wagoner is not provided for by the Act of 7th of June, 1832, and the vessel in which he served was a private armed vessel, which service is not provided for by the above mentioned Act. That Act provides for none who did not perform six months service in a Militia capacity or in a public armed vessel. The claim has therefore been rejected & the papers filed in this Office.

Bond: 21 Oct 1822. Groom given as Leonard STRINGER. Bondsman: Nathan BENNETT. Signed: Leonard BENNETT (STRINGER?) & Nathan BENNETT. Test: A. McALISTER, D.C. License: 21 Oct 1822.

Leonard STRINGER, Jr. is buried in the Miller Cemetery in Livingston County, Kentucky. Birth and death dates for Leonard Junior were located on his tombstone in Cemetery Records for Livingston County, Kentucky. Showed a picture of his tombstone.

Leonard STRINGER, Jr.'s father, Leonard STRINGER fought in the Revolutionary War under Col. Elijah CLARK. He was an intimate friend of George WASHINGTON and preached in a pulpit once occupied by John WESLEY. Having been captured , Leonard was in prison when CORNWALLIS was taken to Yorktown and surrendered. He was given several hundred acres of land in Livingston county, Kentucky in a military land grant for his service in the Revolutionary War.

Leonard was a close friend of Andrew JACKSON. His daughter, Susan, remembered seeing her father and Andrew JACKSON riding horse-back together. See History of Livingston County, Kentucky, page 136.

Leonard STRINGER was a man of versatility. Besides being a soldier he was a doctor, a minister and a school teacher. He was an ardent Baptist.

Leonard was married three times. Nancy DICKERSON was his first wife and Dolly WARE WILLIAMS was his second wife. Dolly was the widow of Bowery WILLIAMS.

Leonard was well educated for his day and time, but seemed to be a wander at heart, for he checked out all stories of new places by moving his family there (Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and back to Kentucky. A STRINGER book was being prepared by Marie STRINGER KAEHLER of Califonia.
