Ebenezer Valentine "Tiney" Moore

Birth: Oct. 3, 1857
Death: Jul. 30, 1920

EBENEZER V. MOORE was born in Hopkins County, Ky., October 3, 1857, and is a son of James A. and Sardinia (Hibbs) Moore, natives of Hopkins County, and of Irish and German descent respectively. James A. Moore was reared to farming. His father, Bryant Moore is among the oldest early settlers of the county. Soon after his marriage, James A. Moore bought wild land near the old homestead, and subsequently improved a farm, upon which he resided and was engaged in agricultural pursuits for several years. In early life be learned the carpenter's trade, and followed the same in connection with farming nearly all his life. About 1872 he built the first houses ever erected in the present village of White Plains, where he was engaged in general merchandising for some two years. He then returned to his farm, where he remained for three years, when he rented a farm, and again removed to White Plains, where he built another house and engaged in business for a short time. Here he resided until his death, March 16, 1881, in his fifty-sixth year. He and wife were members of the Baptist Church. Ebenezer V. Moore was employed on the old homestead until he attained his majority, after which be engaged in farming on his own account, and has been so employed ever since. He was married January 6, 1879, to Miss Narcissa A. Whitfield, a native of Hopkins County, Ky. Three children have blessed their union, of whom Felix and Sophronin L. are living. In politics Mr. Moore is a Democrat.

41. Samuel MEADE , Sr.

Joined Lawrence Washington's Unit in the War with Spain 1730, which was not in tune with the Quaker peacefulness, making him a "flawed Quaker". Samuel wed Mary Downey at Falls Meeting, Bucks Co. PA and removed to Fairfax Co. VA 1740.
Samuel MEADE left his wife Mary to go to the war in Spain, according to Falls MM records, and apparently they were divorced but we do not know what happened to her. A major tenet of the Quaker religion was nonviolence, and his participation in war was sufficient for the later accusations that he was not a true Friend.

Samuel married again, to Margaret MEADE, and they went from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 1747, transferring from Falls Monthly Meeting (MM) to Fairfax Monthly Meeting. The family moved more than once among Cecil Co. Maryland, and Salem Co. New Jersey, all converging closely on the Falls of the Delaware River.

Falls MM records for 1758 responded to an Inquiry on Samuel from Virginia: "and for some time after marriage behaved himself orderly, found the way too strait for him and gave himself a large liberty in the Follys and vices of the world. He left his wife and went of marriage with another. He enlisted in the service of the King in the last Spanish War." It was signed by Mahlon Kirkbride and James Mason.

Samuel was disowned for disunity in 1759 at the request of Falls MM, which reported, "though he appeared to some degree a Friend, his conduct has been inconsistent with Friends' Principles."

A letter directed to William Satterwaite living in Bucks Co. near the Falls of the Delaware, PA., Nov 30 1747/48, was written by William MEADE and signed, "I remain thy affectionate brother," with an addendum by Samuel MEADE: "William Williams is of the mind of selling his land, but David Potts will sell his if he can get a Chap. No more, by my love to thee and thy family and to mother. We are all well at present and I remain thy Loving Brother. Saml MEADE"

Fairfax Co. Deed Book D, p. 549-52, Aug 1, 1764 "Samuel MEADE and Margaret MEADE his wife" to William Holmes, lease and release deeds of a tract of 180 acres "on and about the Kittockton Mountain on the drain of Secotom Branch, it being part of a larger tract conveyed by Bryan Fairfax Esq. to the above said Samuel MEADE by Good and Sufficient Deed bearing date the thirteenth day of October in the Year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Sixty one ..." mentions lines of John Hough, Samuel Coombs, and Thomas Gore.

In 1776 census of Anne Arundel Co. Maryland, listed Samuel MEADE (whether the same or not?) head of household with 1 white woman, 6 white boys, 5 white girls, 1 negro man, 1 negro woman, and 1 negro girl.
Samuel had 4 children by each wife.

Society of Friends minutes in Falls, Bucks County, PA., Fairfax, Fairfax County, Va., Goose Creek, Loudoun County, VA., and Salem M.M., in Salem County, NJ., all have records of Samuel MEADE.

In Falls MM, Salem County, NJ., Samuel witnessed marriage of -
Rachel MEADE to William Carter in 1729
Benjamin Brolssford to Martha Neel 3 Oct 1731
John Ross to Lydia Hollingsworth, dtr of "Stephen on 11th day, 10th month, 1735
James Neald of Makefield to Rachel Gregory on 3 Jan 1737
John Headley to Sarah Bidgood 1738 (with wife Mary Downey)

Marriage to Mary Downey records:
Falls M.M. Quaker Records, pg 185
"Whereas Samuel MEADE of Falls Township in the County aforementioned, having declared their intentions before several monthly meetings of the people called Quakers according to the good order ... amongst whose proceedings therein and having consent of parents, relatives, ... were allowed of by the said meeting ... their said intentions of the twenty fifth day of the eighth month 1737 ... taking the said Mary Downey by the hand did in a solomn mannor of only declare that he took her to be his wife and promising through the Lord's ... to be a loving and truthful husband untill death should separate them ... Signed Samuel and Mary MEADE. Witnesses: James Downey, Ann Humphman, William MEADE, Hannah and Elizabeth Warder, Wm. Hawkins, Martha Worrell, Rachel Janney, Hannah and Deborah Watson, Margaret Combe, Jane and Francis Hague, Richard Hough, Joseph White, Joshua Gore, Johnothan Palmer, Mahlon Kirkbride, Henry Paxson and others.

Listed in colonial soldiers of the South under Major Lawrence Washington's District copy of poll records June 13, 1748 and is listed under Virginia Militia. Quaker
Records from various meetings:
Falls Quaker Men's minutes 4/10/1758

Letter to Friends in Virginia states Samuel MEADE, while with Falls MM lost his wife and soon went out in marriage with another; enlisted in the service of the King in the last spanish war and continued a series of folly and vice.

Falls MM 1758 pg 288-289, "The Friends appointed to write to Friends in Virginia respecting Samuel MEADE report they have done so. and sent their letter by a Friend of the Meeting within the company of which he resides... a copy of which letter being produced was read and is as follows,viz. ... Whereas Friends of Virginia have desired some comment of the behaviour and conduct of Samuel MEADE whilst among us ... these may inform you that he served his ... a Friend and during his apprenticeship and some ... behaved ... our religious Meetings and was admitted to marry among Friends and for some small time after marriage behaved orderly but soon found the way of Truth to strait for him and gave himself a large liberty in the follys and vices of the world. he left his wife and soon went out in marriage with another. He enlisted in the service of the King in the last spanish War and his whole conduct after seemed to be a continued series of folly and vice. Altogether inconsistent with the profession he made for which he deserved the censure of Friends but with his speedy removal from one place to another, prevented their dealing with him in a regular manner ... therefore, as he is settled amongst you, if he continues the same disorderly practice, I will not reform to make proper ... for his misconduct and since he came amongst you it is the mind of Friends that he be testified against, and not returned as one of our religious society ... signed by order in behalf of our Monthly Meeting at the Falls the 6th day of 1758 Mahlon Kirkbride and James Mason".

31st of 3rd month 1759. "Samuel MEADE having resigned within the verge of this meeting for many years past and in some degree appeared as a Friend, though his common conduct and conversation have been inconsistant with Friends' principles, both here and in their part as well as in Pennsylvania which has been signified by Friends of the Falls MM, PA. By letter to this, in which they request that we should testify against him, which advice has been signified to him, by Friends here, and he had nothing to object against the same, but allowed it reasonable. Therefore this meeting appoints Francis Hoge and John Hough to draw a testimony against him".

28 April 1759. "Samuel MEADE was disowned from the Society of Friends ...formerly of Falls but now of Goose Creek for disunity".

30th of 6th month 1759. "Friends appointed have produced a testimony against Samuel MEADE which was read here and signed. Israel Thompson and Jacob Janney are appointed to show Samuel MEADE a testimony against him, report they have, which he had no objection against. The same is ordered to be read at the close of some public meeting of worship at Goose Creek by Jacob Janney".

24th of 9th month 1759. "The testimony against Samuel MEADE was read. Samuel's wife, Margaret, and his children: Sarah, Richard, Samuel, Ruth, Margaret Jr., continued to be members of the Society and his son, Benjamin MEADE, left and re-entered the Society of Firends in Loudoun County, VA.

Birth: 1 Jan 1825 Hopkins County, Kentucky, USA
Death: 19 Sep 1909 (aged 84) Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky, USA
Burial: Odd Fellows Cemetery, Madisonville, Hopkins County, Kentucky, USA
Memorial #: 62685951
Bio:
n Memory of Nathan A. Hibbs, Sr., Died, at his home in Madisonville, where he had lived for 43 years, September 19, 1309, on Sunday after noon at 3:00 oclock, Mr. Hibbs age at death was 84 years, 8 months and 19 days. Mr. Hibbs v-as born and reared iu Hopkins county, Kentucky, January 1st, 1825, and lived all of his life here. Ills death was caused by the infirmities incident to old age He lingered for four weeks, u-i lifs death was not unexpected. He leaves a wife and one half-brother, Joel Hibbs, of Essex, Mo., and one half-sister, Alice Browder, of this county. T. E. Hibbs, of Madisonville, was his nephew. He had a host of other relatives scattered all over the State He had been married four times, the first he married was Miss Nancy Utley, of Richland, to which there were six children born to them but only two daughters survived, Mattie, John Madisons wife, and Dosie, Will Mitchells wife. The second marriage was a Mrs. Herrin and the third time Mrs. Sarah Mitchell a widow with two daughters, Rosie, Josh Owens wife and Mildred, Tandy James wife. And then after him and Sarah were married, there was three children born to them, Nathan, Johnny and Jeff Davis, the little girl that died. And his fourth wife was Miss Polly Satterfield. He lost two wives by death and separated from two. When he first married he lived in Richland, then he moved to the country, and from the country to Madisonville where he lived until his death. When he was 18 years of age he began teaching school and taught -16 sessions. He taught his first school in Providence, and his last at Concord. He nearly always had exhibitions at the close of his schools, for which he enjoyed them so much. He professed a hope in Christ 63 years ago, and was a minister of the Missionary Baptist church for a few years. He bore his sufferings with a great patience and Christian fortitude and wanted to die, he said he was ready and willing to go at any time when the summons should come; all was well with him. He was the father of nine children but only four of them survived. Two boys Nathan and Johnny and two girls, Mattie and Dorie, they were til with him when he died. The funeral services were held at his old home at 3:00 oclock, Monday evening, by Rev. Pryce E. Gatlin, of Madisonville of the Baptist church. The remains were laid to rest at Odd Fellows cemetery. He was an honest, uprjght man.

DUNLAP Abstracts from Chalkley 5

MAGGART vs. CROCKETT {VA Chancery Court (Staunton) Ended Causes, 117/40}
“John Maggart made an entry into Rockbridge for 200 acres on Bratton’s Run. Shortly afterwards John Dunlap made an entry on a
part of John’s tract. Died, leaving it to his daughter Polly HODGE. John DUNLAP had a brother, James. MAGGART is a German.
Polly HODGE married Robert CROCKETT. James DUNLAP Jr. was son of James DUNLAP....{Chalkley “Causes Ended”, 2:115}

[John &Ann] DUNLAP Heirs vs. [Ann] DUNLAP Exors [James Dunlap and John Gay]
{VA Chancery Court (Staunton) Ended Causes, 249/87—now identified in the LVA database as case 1817-037}

This suit, which is rich in DUNLAP genealogical content, includes a copy of the 19May1808 will of Ann DUNLAP, John2
(Alexander1)’s widow. Ann lists “my six children, to wit. Alexander DUNLAP, Betsy GAY, James DUNLAP, Ann BRATTON, John
DUNLAP, and Polly CROCKET”, and also names “my grandson Samuel Dunlap HODGE”. Meanwhile, the accompanying copy of her
husband John’s will, refers to his daughter Mary Hodge and Mary’s son James Hodge. From this we may infer that daughter Mary was
married first to a HODGE, by whom she had sons Samuel and James, and that she married, second, Robert CROCKETT—both of these
familiar Big Calfpasture names. Ann’s will also names her grandson Robert Gay—resumably a son of her daughter Elizabeth GAY.

Associated with the papers of this suit is a receipt for the $20 dated 15Jun1809, annotated “received of Major John GAY” (identifying
him thus as John2 GAY Esq, son of John1
) “for the building a gallery in Lebanon Meeting House for the use of the negroes of said
Congregation”. {Chalkley “Circuit Court Causes Ended”, 191-192}

I’ve downloaded all the documents of this case and examined the key ones—the complaint, the joint answer by the defendants, the copies
of the wills of father John2 and mother Ann, and one undated court judgement paper (there may well be others in this case that dragged
on until 1817), and sampled a few of the remaining papers of this case, which totaled 277 in number. Of interest is the fact that evidently,
it was John2a’s oldest son Alexander3 that got up this suit, subscribed the names of at least some of his siblings without their permission,
and who later formally rejected participation in it, and misrepresented what was owing to him and others. The large number of documents
in this case appear to be the receipts, affidavits, etc. that were collected and kept by defendant John Gay, Esq., who was called “friend” and
made a co-executor in Ann’s will, along with her son James, and who had been a county justice from the age of 21. From this and another
case where Gay was a defendant (and was held blameless in the judgement) it’s evident that he was not only the sole of rectitude, but also
meticulous in his record keeping.
