MOORE was born in Hopkins County, Ky., October 3, 1857, and is a son of James A. and Sardinia (Hibbs) Moore, natives of Hopkins County, and of Irish and German descent respectively. James A. Moore was reared to farming. His father, Bryant Moore is among the oldest early settlers of the county. Soon after his marriage, James A. Moore bought wild land near the old homestead, and subsequently improved a farm, upon which he resided and was engaged in agricultural pursuits for several years. In early life be learned the carpenter's trade, and followed the same in connection with farming nearly all his life. About 1872 he built the first houses ever erected in the present village of White Plains, where he was engaged in general merchandising for some two years. He then returned to his farm, where he remained for three years, when he rented a farm, and again removed to White Plains, where he built another house and engaged in business for a short time. Here he resided until his death, March 16, 1881, in his fifty-sixth year. He and wife were members of the Baptist Church. Ebenezer V. Moore was employed on the old homestead until he attained his majority, after which be engaged in farming on his own account, and has been so employed ever since. He was married January 6, 1879, to Miss Narcissa A. Whitfield, a native of Hopkins County, Ky. Three children have blessed their union, of whom Felix and Sophronin L. are living. In politics Mr. Moore is a Democrat. Samuel MEADE , Sr. Joined Lawrence Washington's Unit in the War with Spain 1730, which was not in tune with the Quaker peacefulness, making him a "flawed Quaker". Samuel wed Mary Downey at Falls Meeting, Bucks Co. PA and removed to Fairfax Co. VA 1740. Samuel MEADE left his wife Mary to go to the war in Spain, according to Falls MM records, and apparently they were divorced but we do not know what happened to her. A major tenet of the Quaker religion was nonviolence, and his participation in war was sufficient for the later accusations that he was not a true Friend. Samuel married again, to Margaret MEADE, and they went from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 1747, transferring from Falls Monthly Meeting (MM) to Fairfax Monthly Meeting. The family moved more than once among Cecil Co. Maryland, and Salem Co. New Jersey, all converging closely on the Falls of the Delaware River. Falls MM records for 1758 responded to an Inquiry on Samuel from Virginia: "and for some time after marriage behaved himself orderly, found the way too strait for him and gave himself a large liberty in the Follys and vices of the world. He left his wife and went of marriage with another. He enlisted in the service of the King in the last Spanish War." It was signed by Mahlon Kirkbride and James Mason. Samuel was disowned for disunity in 1759 at the request of Falls MM, which reported, "though he appeared to some degree a Friend, his conduct has been inconsistent with Friends' Principles." A letter directed to William Satterwaite living in Bucks Co. near the Falls of the Delaware, PA., Nov 30 1747/48, was written by William MEADE and signed, "I remain thy affectionate brother," with an addendum by Samuel MEADE: "William Williams is of the mind of selling his land, but David Potts will sell his if he can get a Chap. Hibbs, Sr., Died, at his home in Madisonville, where he had lived for 43 years, September 19, 1309, on Sunday after noon at 3:00 oclock, Mr. Hibbs age at death was 84 years, 8 months and 19 days. Mr. Hibbs v-as born and reared iu Hopkins county, Kentucky, January 1st, 1825, and lived all of his life here. Ills death was caused by the infirmities incident to old age He lingered for four weeks, u-i lifs death was not unexpected. He leaves a wife and one half-brother, Joel Hibbs, of Essex, Mo., and one half-sister, Alice Browder, of this county. T. E. Hibbs, of Madisonville, was his nephew. He had a host of other relatives scattered all over the State He had been married four times, the first he married was Miss Nancy Utley, of Richland, to which there were six children born to them but only two daughters survived, Mattie, John Madisons wife, and Dosie, Will Mitchells wife. The second marriage was a Mrs. Herrin and the third time Mrs. Sarah Mitchell a widow with two daughters, Rosie, Josh Owens wife and Mildred, Tandy James wife. And then after him and Sarah were married, there was three children born to them, Nathan, Johnny and Jeff Davis, the little girl that died. And his fourth wife was Miss Polly Satterfield. He lost two wives by death and separated from two. When he first married he lived in Richland, then he moved to the country, and from the country to Madisonville where he lived until his death. When he was 18 years of age he began teaching school and taught -16 sessions. He taught his first school in Providence, and his last at Concord. He nearly always had exhibitions at the close of his schools, for which he enjoyed them so much. He professed a hope in Christ 63 years ago, and was a minister of the Missionary Baptist church for a few years. He bore his sufferings with a great patience and Christian fortitude and wanted to die, he said he was ready and willing to go at any time when the summons should come; all was well with him. He was the father of nine children but only four of them survived. Two boys Nathan and Johnny and two girls, Mattie and Dorie, they were til with him when he died. The funeral services were held at his old home at 3:00 oclock, Monday evening, by Rev. Pryce E. Gatlin, of Madisonville of the Baptist church. The remains were laid to rest at Odd Fellows cemetery. He was an honest, uprjght man. Ann lists my six children, to wit. Alexander DUNLAP, Betsy GAY, James DUNLAP, Ann BRATTON, John DUNLAP, and Polly CROCKET, and also names my grandson Samuel Dunlap HODGE. Meanwhile, the accompanying copy of her husband Johns will, refers to his daughter Mary Hodge and Marys son James Hodge. From this we may infer that daughter Mary was married first to a HODGE, by whom she had sons Samuel and James, and that she married, second, Robert CROCKETTboth of these familiar Big Calfpasture names. Anns will also names her grandson Robert Gayresumably a son of her daughter Elizabeth GAY. Associated with the papers of this suit is a receipt for the $20 dated 15Jun1809, annotated received of Major John GAY (identifying him thus as John2 GAY Esq, son of John1 ) for the building a gallery in Lebanon Meeting House for the use of the negroes of said Congregation. {Chalkley Circuit Court Causes Ended, 191-192} Ive downloaded all the documents of this case and examined the key onesthe complaint, the joint answer by the defendants, the copies of the wills of father John2 and mother Ann, and one undated court judgement paper (there may well be others in this case that dragged on until 1817), and sampled a few of the remaining papers of this case, which totaled 277 in number. Of interest is the fact that evidently, it was John2as oldest son Alexander3 that got up this suit, subscribed the names of at least some of his siblings without their permission, and who later formally rejected participation in it, and misrepresented what was owing to him and others. The large number of documents in this case appear to be the receipts, affidavits, etc. that were collected and kept by defendant John Gay, Esq., who was called friend and made a co-executor in Anns will, along with her son James, and who had been a county justice from the age of 21.
