O. King, who was stricken with paralysis Saturday morning, March 27th, from which she never rallied, passed away at her home four miles east and one mile south of Mahaska, Kansas, April 8, 1915, aged 61 years, 9 months and 15 days. Amanda Melcina Melvin was born near Ripley, Brown county, Ohio, June 23, 1853. After the death of her father she accompanied her mother to Atchison county Mo., when about sixteen years of age, There she met and united in marriage to Perry O. King in October 1875. After residing in Missouri about nine years Mr. and Mrs. King moved to Jefferson County, Nebr., locating near Reynolds, where they remained until the spring of 1900, when they came to Washington county where they have since resided. To this union were born five childre, all of whom are living and were with their mother during her illness. The children are: Zoa Liston, Oakwood, Okla., Paul Alverda, Floyd B., and Lloyd King and Mrs. Bessie Allen, of Mahaska.------- In 1893 she united with the M. E. Church, of which she remained a faihful member, being a woman of strong Christian character, patient, loving and self-sacrificing. Well may her children cherish her memory as a precious legacy and we fain would say a word of comfort to the stricken ones, but we can only let our tears flow in sympathy with theirs, and point them to the promise, "At eventide it shall be Light." Funeral services were held at M. E. Church in Mahaska at 4:00 o'clock Friday, April 9 conducted by Rev. B. E. Jacobs, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and interment made in the Mahaska cemetery. There is debate over whether Rachel's maiden name was Bacon or Jones. One possibility Rachel was the daughter of Michael & Isabella (nee Bourland) Bacon. Isabella Bourland Bacon herself is buried in this cemetery which can support there being a relation between Isabella Bacon and Rachel. Rachel Bacon Murphy was supposedly born in Eastern Tennessee, which coordinates with Isabella Bourland Bacon having with another daughter, Sarah, having been born in Hawkins, in Eastern Tennessee. Michael & Isabella Bacon's daughter, Sarah, married David Murphy, Sr.'s brother, Dubart. Dubart & Sarah (nee Bacon) Murphy are buried at the IOOF Cemetery on Ste. Genevieve Avenue in Farmington. If Rachel proves to be a daughter of Michael & Isabella Bacon, then Rachel who married David Murphy, Sr., would have been one of two Bacon sisters (Rachel & Sarah) who had married two Murphy brothers (David, Sr. & Dubart). There is a problem with the documentation of Rachel's children and the birth/death years (1773/1827) for Rachel as documented in the book "Cooks, Murphy & Hodges of Early Virginia" by Elizabeth Nichols. Rachel's actual headstone is engraved with her having died on March 10, 1853, aged 64 years, which would have meant she was born in 1788 or 89. This makes it impossible to have then born her first child in 1792. Stating this though, the generally accepted list of children of David Sr. & Rachel Murphy, beginning in the early 1790's, are as follows: 1) Isaac Murphy possibly born 1792 2) William Murphy born circa 1794 {who married Rhoda George in 1818} 3) Richard Murphy born circa 1796 {who married 1/2 cousin Sarah Barton "Sallie" Murphy} 4) Tobitha [Tabitha] Murphy born in 1799 {who married 1/2 cousin Rev. John C. Murphy in 1815} 5) Lucy Ann Murphy born circa 1800 {who married John Campbell} 6) Rachel Murphy born 1805 {who married James N. Younger} 7) Louisiana Murphy born between 1806 & 1808 {who married Watson Cole} 8) Sally Murphy born circa 1810 9) David Murphy Jr. supposedly born in 1820 {who, according to "Cooks, Murphys and Hodges of Early Virginia" by Elizabeth Nichols, married Sarah Ann Alexander, but according to Masonic Cemetery Records at the county library in Farmington married Elviny Whitenburg.} 10) Andrew Jackson Murphy born in 1828: Again according to the book "Cooks, Murphy & Hodges of Early Virginia", there is an assumption Rachel died by 1827 and David Sr. had remarried to a Miss Whitenburg in 1827 and then had child Andrew Jackson Murphy in 1828. Since Rachel's headstone clearly shows she did not die until 1853, then the more plausable assumption is Andrew Jackson Murphy was actually the child of Rachel Murphy and the "Miss Whitenburg" referred to in the "Cooks, Murphys and Hodges of Early Virginia" book was the Elviny Whitenburg who married David Sr.'s son, David Murphy, Jr. But one needs to look at the birth years of these children, there is too big of an age gap between first born (1792) and last two born (1820 and 1828 respectively). Were children #9 & #10 full siblings to their eight older brothers and sisters? The first eight children were born roughly every two years, as is an expected birth pattern for a healthy woman of that day, between 1792 and 1810, but then 10 years later, in 1820, David Murphy, Jr. is born and 8 years after him, another brother, Andrew Jackson Murphy in 1828. It appears to be too large of an age gap from first born Isaac in 1792 to Andrew in 1828, 36 years, to have all come from one mother, Rachel Bacon Murphy. Plausible assumption: With conflicting documents that stated David Murphy Sr. married either a Rachel Jones or Rachel Bacon, one research suggested Rachel might have been a widow, marrying a Mr. Jones first, then David Murphy, hence the name Rachel Bacon Jones Murphy. But that would not explain the birth years of Rachel compared to her supposed children. Possibly there really were two different Rachels. The first wife might have been Rachel Jones, having the early year children, and with one researcher stating David Sr. married twice, he could have then married Rachel Bacon which would explain the younger children birth years. All the children would have been documented as children to David Sr. & Rachel Murphy. Just speculation but there has to be an explanation with the 36 year spread of children. Side Note: One web-site by "Wendy Harrison's Family Page" states the daughters of Isabella Bourland Bacon were Sarah (b.1785 & married David Murphy, Sr.'s brother, Dubart Murphy), Mary (b. 1783 & no family listed) and Catherine (b. June 6, 1788 & married George Talyor, April of 1805). No daughter Rachel is listed, but this could/would be inconclusive evidence. Rachel's birth year is most likely 1788 as she was 64 years of age ten weeks into 1853 when she passed away and her birthday probably had not yet arrived in 1853. With the assumption Rachel most likely born in 1788, could she have been a twin to Catherine Bacon Taylor born on June 6, 1788? One last twist: Catherine Bacon Taylor herself was not a blood relative to the Murphy Family, yet two of her children carried the middle name "Murphy" according to "Wendy Harrison's Family Page." Was George Taylor a Murphy descendant himself? From "Sketches from Williamson County, Texas: Its History and Its People" Compiled and Edited by Mrs. Jean Shroyer, History Book Chairman, and Mrs. H Hazel Hood, President of WCGS, published in 1985, p.243: "THE QUEEN FAMILY" by Dewey Don Queen: Elias Butler Queen was born 5 Feb 1821 in North Carolina. He married Edna PETTY in Aa Arkansas about 1841. They had one son, Samuel. Edna died between 1843 and 1846. Then in 1847, Elias married Martha Jane BARBER.Their first child, James S. was born in Missouri. The other eleven were born in Texas. They were: Texana, William L., John, Elias Butler, Arizona, David, Fanny L., Joseph Anderson, Robert Lee, Matie, and Mabel D. Elias acquired the land between Weir and Jonah that is still called "Queen Hill." Sometime after the 1850 Census, he brought Martha, Samuel, James and Texana to their new home from Caldwell County, TX Elias and Martha's son, Robert Lee, grew up to become a Texas Ranger and Sheriff while some of his cousins were on the opposite side of the law. Samuel "Kep" Queen, Elias' nephew, and John Toliver Bar Barber, Martha's nephew, were two who rode the outlaw trail. Kep was shot and killed when he was trapped by a posse near Claremore, OK in Nov., 1888. John died in Dec. 1889. On the 1900 Census, Elias stated as his occupation as CAPITALIST. But most of his life was spent as a horse rancher. He passed away at his home 16 Oct 1906 and is buried at the Queen Hill Family Cemetery. Martha died 22 March 1910. She was laid to rest next to her husband. PAGE 244, THE QUEEN FAMILY OF QUEEN HILL, by John Lee and Katy McMillen: Elias' mother was Mary Butler (born ca 1789, NC, to Elias and Elizabeth Butler). Her other chi children were: Mrs. John Dawson (Tempe); Mrs Aaron Franklin Shaw (Bettie); Mrs. Laura Garner; Mrs. John Ringer (Huldah)(sic);birth date also shown as 2/5/1821 - Montgomery Co., NC Elias and Samuel Queen married sisters Edna and Jane Petty. It is reported that Edna died at the birth of her first child and that it died also. Elias Queen afterward remarried and raised a large family, some of whom have been in contact in latter years. Elias lived in New Mexico and it is said that there is some sort of public monument erected to his honor in that state. The family moved from Montgomery CO, NC to Carroll Co, TN to Carroll CO, AR to Milam CO, TX in 1847. Elias and his father were part of the petition to form Williamson CO, TX in 1848. "We are sad to report the death of one of our respected and venerable gentlemen, Mr. Elias Queen, who had so many years bravely faced the battles of life and from the standpoint of time had almost proven himself invulnerably, but in accordance with the established vale of the universe the ravages of time brought death and decay upon the earthly temple of this worthy citizen. He succumbed to the inevitable at 11 A.M., October 16, 1906, thus ending a useful career of 87 years. Mr. Lee Queen, sheriff of Hartley County, (Texas) and two brothers arrived in time to attend the funeral and burial of their father." Source: Williamson Co.
