"On 14 July 1760, Samuel Rankin purchased 320 acres from David Alexander on James Cathey's Mill Creek in Rowan County, NC. John and William Rankin, believed by some to be Samuel's brothers, both preceded him to that part of Orange County near Rowan County which later became Guilford County. Between 1760 and 1765, Samuel was very active in Rowan County serving on various juries and grand juries. On 31 Aug 1765, he and 'wife Elenor' sold this same 320 acres on James Cathey's Mill Creek to John McNeeley." [A. Gregg Moore & Forney A. Rankin, The Rankins of North Carolina, (Marietta, GA: 1997), 20.]

Samuel and Ellen Rankin moved from Rowan County to Mecklenburg County around 1765. On 19 Jan 1768, they purchased 150 acres of land on Kuykendall's Creek in what is now Gaston County from David Alexander, planter of Mecklenburg County. Then, on 22 Dec 1768, Samuel Rankin

A bronze marker placed by D.A.R. on the stone wall surrounding Goshen Grove Cemetery where he is buried commends Samuel Rankin as patriot in Revolutionary war - due to age, probably gave supplies and services.
From Revolutionary Army Accounts for North Carolina A:179,
Historical Commission, Raleigh North Carolina: "For sundries furnished the militia of North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina as allowed by Brown, McKissick, auditors, Salisbury District September 1781 to Samuel
Rankin for wagon hire."

Also, A:225: "For sundries furnished the Militia of North Carolina as allowed by Ervin and Miler, auditors for Morgan District."Also from Revolutionary War Accounts of North Carolina, Volume 5, page 36, folio 1.

An article by Minnie Stowe Puett, Gaston Co. historian, in her book "History of Gaston County":

Samuel Rankin, the Gaston County pioneer of the family of that name, was of Scotch-Irish stock. He, with the Moores, Alexanders, and others of his countrymen, came to
the Mt. Holly section from Pennsylvania about 1763 and settled on Kuykendall or Dutchman's Creek on lands opened by the government a short time before, some of which had been taken by James Armstrong. The lands of Samuel Rankin's first settlement were purchased from Armstrong. Two years later he moved to a large grant of 2000 acres, lying between Stanley and Dutchman's Creeks. While living in Pennsylvania, he married Ellen Alexander, a sister of
Robert Alexander and an aunt of Margaret Alexander, Robert's daughter, who was betrothed to Major William Chronicle at the time of his death at King's Mountain. Robert Alexander also moved to the Mt. Holly section
and became prominent in the county.
Samuel Rankin and his wife had eleven children. One of these, William, was a soldier of the Revolution. A sketch of him will be given later.
Much of the land of the original grant to Samuel Rankin is still in possession of his descendants. The late Rufus Rankin, reared in the New Hope section of the county, built a new house on the site of the original settlement, about two miles from Stanley on the north side of Stanley
Creek. Rufus died a short time after his home was completed. His widow, Minnie Armstrong Rankin, continued to occupy it for a while, but she later moved to Gastonia.
The settlement has for years been known as Rankintown.

Article from "The Gastonia Gazette" - Gastonia, NC, May 1955 by Mrs. Kay Dixon(picture included)

Samuel Rankin and wife, Ellen Alexander, were pioneers who settled in this area in 1765, and obtained a grant to a large tract of land, the majority of which is still in the possession of the Rankin family. Samuel built a house in 1765 on a hill overlooking the 300 acres that he was later to deed to his son William (born 1760 - died 1853, age 93 years). When a boy of 17 William joined the military company of his uncle, Captain Robert Alexander; he saw service in the Cherokee uprising, in the battles of Cowpens and Eutaw Springs. When he was 27 years old he married Mary Moore Campbell, sister of General John Moore. They settled on land Samuel Rankin gave them and built a small log house with a tremendous eight foot fireplace. Here they lived until the finer, larger house in front of it was completed in 1800. The first cabin then was used for a kitchen; unfortunately this interesting old building has been torn down, and many tools, looms, farm implements of by-gone days have been lost. The charming old house, of logs covered with siding, has small rooms, quaint old mantles, and an inclosed (sic) stairway. The house is a veritable store house of valuable and interesting articles, among which are straight chair that William Rankin used,
cupboards with some of the original china in them; spool beds, old trunks, and tables, the old Bisanar clock with weights that rest in a sand box, a fine old secretary with secret drawers. The furniture was said to have been made by Isaac Holland. William's sister Ellen married Joseph Dickson, son of General Joseph Dickson and went with that family to Tennessee. William and Mary Moore had nine children, who married into the Rutledge, Moore, Johnson, and Campbell families, neighbors in that section. William's son Richard (born 1804, died 1899) married Annie
Hartgrove, Carolyn Beatty, and Delia Bisaner. There were 14 children, the progenitors of the many Rankins of Gaston county.Richard represented Lincoln county in the legislature of 1844-1850, and Gaston county in 1856, was influential in the organization of Gaston county in 1847.
The youngest son of Richard Rankin and Delia Bisaner, Rev. Frank Rankin, inherited the old home. He married Aneta Battley and their children were born in the house. Mrs. W. H. Jarman (Mary Delia), Mrs. Craig Watson, (Katharine), Mrs. Landon Roberts, (Jean), and the two sons Richard and Frank. The sons live in Mt. Holly and "Willowside" is cared
for and cherished by the widow of Rev. Frank Rankin. Rev. Frank Rankin and his sister, Mrs. Kathleen Rankin Moore have died in the past few years. They were among the very few grandchildren of a Revolutionary soldier left in the county.

William Rankin died in 1854, age 93, Richard died in 1899, age 95; William is buried at Goshen, Richard at Mt. Holly.

•Note:
This John Lewis was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses PIONEER LEWIS FAMILIES by Michael L. Cook Indicates that Major JOHN LEWIS was the son of Col. John Lewis born about 16 16-18 in Monmouthshire, Wales & grandson of the immigrant John Lewis & wife Lidia. Major JOHN LEWIS was born about 1639-40 probably in Monmouthshire or Brecknockshire, Wales and migrated to America approximately 1655 a few years after his father. He lived with the Mostyn family in Denbighshire for a time before emigrating.

CONFLICT: He married ISABELLA MILLER Some sources say this wife was ISABELLA WARNER but there several wives.

They had 15 children. She married 2nd Robert Yard.

Children of Major JOHN & ISABELLA were:
Mary born about 1665
Edward born September 5, 1667
Elizabeth born about 1668
John born November 30, 16 69
William born about 1670
Nicholas born about 1671
David born about 1672
Zachary born about 1673
Thomas born about 1674
James born about 1675
Mildred born about 1676
Sarah born about 1678 (ours)
Gawin born about 1680
Patience born ab out 1682
Owen born about 1684
{note: there is still controversy over the number of John Lewises in this line I am in the corner that believes there were 3 John (Immigrant), Maj. John, and John (Warner Hall) The lineage above is not
correct based on their tombstones. On the tombstone of Edward Lewis he states he is the Child of JOHN LEWIS & ISABELLA and grandson of JOHN LEWIS of Monmouthshire. That makes JOHN who married ISABELLA son of the immigrant - not grandson}

Lewis Family of Warner Hall Now there was a John Lewis who has better claims than either Robert or Major William Lewis to be considered the propositus of the family of Warner Hall. This was John Lewis who patented 100 acres in Warwick county at the Deceased of Deep Creek, and in 1653 patented 250 acres on a branch of Poropo tank Creek, in Glouchester county, which branch was then called LewisÆ Creek bu t formerly TotopotomoyÆs Creek. At the foot of the later patent are given the names of those on account of whose importation he was entitled to the land (i.e. , 50 acres for each), viz., John Lewis, probably himself; Lydia Lewis, probably his wife; William Lewis, Edward Lewis and John Lewis, Jr. (probably his sons). à "JOHN LEWIS, JR.," had a grant in 1655 for 250 acres at the main swamp of Po ropotank Creek. As "Mr. JOHN LEWIS," he patented April 22, 1658, 100 acres in New Kent, northeast side of CainhowÆs Swamp, and in 1667, 2600 acres in New Kent and Glouchester on both sides of Poropotank Creek, "next below the plantation of said JOHN LEWIS," 600 acres of which was granted to said JOHN LEWIS by patent dated November 23, 1663. His residence in 1676 being near Major Thomas PateÆs , where Bacon encamped, he suffered severely from the depredations of his troop s. In 1680, he was captain of horse in the militia of New Kent, and one of its justices. New Kent then took in King and Queen county as far down as Poropotank Creek. In 1675 he was termed major (in the foot service) and patented in New Kent 10,000 acres with Lieut. Col. John Smith, Capt. Philip Lightfoot, Mr. Thoma s Royston and Mr. John Buckner (General Court Records).

According to the tombstone of his son Col. John Lewis (Quarterly, II., p. 227), he married ISABELLA _______, and had issue, John Lewis of Warner Hall.

Accordingly 3 John Lewis, of Warner Hall, son of 2 Major JOHN2 LEWIS and ISABELLA his wife, who was probably son of 1 John1 Lewis and Lydia his wife.

I forgot to tell you that Jennie Penland was the daughter of William Penland Sr. and Anna (Annis) Donnal and I have the Penlands back to 1500's if you would like that also.
James Fox born 1740 married unknown first wife and the following children I believe are hers. Her last name may be Sisk as that family moved from Virginia to North Carolina and part of them went on as James Fox did to Hopkins County, Kentucky. Hugh Fox; James Fox; Titus Fox born 1760 Shenandoah County, Virginia and died June 22, 1825 in Hopkins County, Kentucky; John Wesley Fox Sr. born February 19, 1764 Shenandoah County, Virginia died August 1, 1840 in Knox County, Tennessee; Daniel Fox born January 1, 1766 in Shenandoah County, Virginia died April 22, 1845 in Marshall County, Kentucky; Allen Fox born 1768 in Shenandoah County, Virginia died July 13, 1843 in Weaverville, Buncome County, North Carolina.
Then James Fox remarried to Elizabeth (I believe Elizabeth Bean) on May 12, 1773 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. She was born about 1751. Then they had at least two sons
Noah Fox born 1776 in Virginia/North Carolina died before 1860 in Hopkins County, Kentucky and Enoch Fox born July 3, 1774 in Shenandoah County, Virginia and died May 1853 in Lafayette, Missouri. Now I know they were in North Carolina and were at Kings Mountain in 1780 and in 1782 they are listed on the tax list at Wilkes County North Carolina and he purchases his land on October 23, 1783 on the middle prong of Swan Creek 138 acres on his own line and that of William Lewis's line so when he to have land prior to that to match his own line and William Lewis's but this is the earliest deed I have found so far. I find them on the tax lists till 1796 and on the 1790 Census of Wilkes County, North Carolina however everyone trys to say that the Fox's in Burke are not related to the ones in Wilkes and I say wrong. I have only a few children of Hugh's and none of his son James a lot on the others and since my grandfather said that the ones in Burke were part of his father's family and some of the names are so close I believe that they are related.
Also on page 17 of Alexander County, North Carlina Heritage book published in 1986 it states"Alexander County was formed in 1847 and parts of what was Wilkes and Burke Counties became Alexander County."Fox Family" James Fox's survey of 325 acres on September 6, 1779 was on both sides of Lower Little River and adjoined Alexander Grahn's line. The chain carriers were William Irons and Alexander Graham. James Fox had three state land grants on Lower Little River totaling 675 acres of land. Hugh and William Fox settled on the Middle Little River. They seemed to arrive after the Revolutionary War and entries for land were made in the 1790's. The relationship to James Fox is not know, but they seem to be the same generation. Hugh Fox had 410 acres and William Fox had 150 acres of land in 1796, according to a Burke County tax list."
Now according to our family history and the list of men at Kings Mountain there was a James Fox listed right with and right together as Captain Lewis seemed to list family together and since everything they told me has proven true then I have to believe that this might will be James Fox's son James and Hugh Fox and the William Fox could be one of their sons or another son of old James Fox. So to me this proves they were related in some way to the ones in Wilkes just like I was told.

William1 Hibbs, supposed to be the son of William and Joanne (__) Hibbs of the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, was said to have been born the 23 of December or January 1664/5. However, I have not yet seen any proof that the Gloustershire man was the same one who came to Pennsylvania and died sometime between 28 Seventh Month [September] 1708 and 5 March 1709/10 in Byberry, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. William married 12 February 1686/7 Hannah HOWELL, daughter of Thomas.

Our William, whoever were his parents, emigrated to America on the Greyhound, Joseph Wasey, master. The ship loaded in London from 11 April to 31 May 1677, just after the more famous Kent, and like her was also bound for New Jersey. The Greyhound arrived at Wickaco [sic] in the Delaware River in October 1677. William Hibbs or Hebes is identified among her passengers by Sheppard, which is definitive enough for me.[6]

If our William was born in 1664/5, he would be twelve years old when he arrived in New Jersey. My assumption is that he would have been apprenticed or indentured to someone. Thus far I have found no trace of him until he shows up five to eight years later in Pennsylvania.

If William turned 21 in 1685, my guess is that this is when he would have been able to settle. He showed up in the general vicinity of Byberry by 1685.[7] His land lay northwest of the tract belonging to Henry ENGLISH. On Holmes's map, Henry English shares a tract with Henry COMLY, Sarah WOOLMAN, and Abel NOBLE on the county line.[8] William Hibbs's land is not marked.

Friends meetings for worship were settled in Byberry in 1683, meeting first at the home of John Hart. The first meeting house was constructed in about 1694. About the year 1701 it became a Preparative Meeting under Abington Monthly Meeting. The stone meeting house was built in 1714, with an addition in 1753. This was replaced in 1808 by a new stone meeting house, about 66 feet by 36 feet.[9] So the building presently in use is not the one in which our Hibbs family worshipped.

William and Hannah HOWELL, sometimes spelled Houl, and perhaps Hywel in Welsh, daughter of Thomas, were married 12 February 1686/7 in Byberry Meeting.[10] On Holmes's map, the tract for "Thomas Hould" was just over the county line in Bucks County, bordered by Lawrence and Joseph Growden to the southeast, John Gilbert to the northeast,

On 26/12m/1689 "Will Hibbs" and Nicholas HICKET witnessed a power of attorney granted by two Bucks County shipwrights to appoint Abel HINEKSTON [sic] to be their attorney to receive a deed for 40 acres.[11]

When the Keithian controversy[12] erupted in 1692, John HART was a leading supporter of George KEITH. Because Byberry Meeting was held so near Hart's house, and was considerably under his influence, a group of Friends seceeded and met at the home of Henry ENGLISH. William Hibbs was one of those who left. Since the Friends burying ground was on Hart's farm, in 1694 English gave an acre of his land for Friends to use as a "burying-place" for those in good standing with the meeting. In spite of the provision that the land only be used for burials, a meeting house was soon erected there, with the full consent of the donor. The building was of logs, chinked with mud, and covered with bark. It served as a place of worship for twenty years before being replaced with a more comfortable stone structure.[13]

At some point Abington Monthly Meeting minuted dealing with a William Hibbs for refusing to take off his hat when William WALTON (d. 1736), the first recorded minister in Byberry, prayed.[14] I do not know the date. It might well have been part of the Keithian controversy: a person who did not remove his hat when another Friend prayed was saying, in effect, that the praying Friend was not really communicating with God, that he was at best insincere, and more likely an imposter, not a true minister called by Christ. This, obviously, was a serious charge to make against someone the meeting had recognized as being given by God gifts of ministry. This needs more research in the minutes of Abington MM. It is possible it concerns a different man with the same name.

Local historian Joseph Martindale cryptically wrote that William Hibbs "seems to have had some difficulty with his neighbors."[15] Meeting minutes and court records need to be checked to confirm this and uncover details. He is perhaps confusing William with his son and grandson?

William died between 28 September 1708 when he signed his will and 5 March 1709/10 when it was probated.[16] He signed with his mark, indicating he was illiterate, and it was witnessed by Abraham GRIFFITH, and Henry ENGLISH (who also signed with a mark). William named his wife Hannah executrix, and mentioned his children Joseph, Jonathan, Jacob, William, Jeremiah, Sarah, Phebe, and Hannah. For overseers he named Daniel WALTON and William WALTON, possibly (but not necessarily) the one who was a recorded minister.[17]

The confusion on the part of many familysearch entries as to where he died or was buried is probably a result of unfamiliarity with the structure of Friends meetings and records. Abington was the Monthly Meeting, under whose care all marriages occurred, and in whose records all births and deaths were recorded. Byberry was a Preparative Meeting under Abington, with its own burying ground. William would technically be a member of Abington Monthly Meeting but would be an active participant of Byberry, because that is where he lived and worshipped.

Hannah married secondly, in 1712, Henry ENGLISH, whose farm lay southeast of the Hibbs's. Before they were married, in March 1711/2, Henry had made a deed of his property to her, "in consideration of the love, good-will and affection which he had and did bear toward his loving friend, Hannah Hibbs." Henry died about 1724. They had no children.[18]

Hannah's will was written 13 June 1737 and probated 30 August 1737. She listed her daughters Sarah Cooper and Phobey BLICOR [sic: Blaker], and youngest son Jeremiah. Executors were her sons Joseph and William Hibbs.[19]

b) Hannah Hibbs, b. 6/4[?]m/1730; may be the Hannah Hibbs who m. James COOPER and was the grandmother of the author James Fennimore Cooper.
c) Phebe Hibbs, b. 14/2m/1732; in the will of Thomas NELSON of Middletown, dated 4 June 1753, pr. 4 Aug. 1753, left bequests to "friend Phebe Hibbs daughter of William Hibbs and her son Valentine Nelson, alias Hibbs and any child or children of hers begat by me" also Naomi Nelson alias WILDMAN, daughter of Hannah Wildman; and sister Ann WILSON "as long as she remains Ann Wilson or goes to live with her husband again"; Thomas gave real estate to Valentine Nelson alias Hibbs.[25] Friends minuted that Phebe's behavior was "so disagreeable to truth that friends can do nothing but testify against her", 2/2m/1752.[26] Eight years later, still unmarried, Phebe brought a paper condemning her action, but after consideration, and consultation with the men, it was not accepted.[27]
d) Sarah Hibbs, b. 4/1m/1734; it may have been this Sarah who paid a substitute fine for her brother, a breach of Friends' peace witness. Her paper acknowledging and condemning her action was accepted by Friends 4/5m/1780.[28]
e) William Hibbs, Jr. b. 2/10m/1735; disowned 2/9m/1756 for highway robbery. See below.
f) James Hibbs, b. 7/10m/1737; d. d. 31 Jan. 1789 In his will, dated 12/9m/1785, he identified himself as William Jr. of Northampton township. He did not name his wife. Son Benjamin was made executor. William named his son Nehemiah's children; and his own sons James and William, and daughters Anna WORSTALL, Abigail PARSONS, and Ann SMITH.[29]
g) Ann Hibbs, b. 12/9m/1739;

The Middletown Monthly Meeting overseers reported that a complaint was brought against William Hibbs Sr. by Margaret THORNTON for refusing to settle long-standing accounts with her and her late husband Joseph, 6/2m/1755; they were reported settled 6/3m/1755.[30] Later that year William Hibbs Jr. was accused by John WILLIAMS of robbing him on the road at night. William Jr. denied the robbery, and came to monthly meeting but was unable to clear himself. Friends decided 4/12m/1755 that a testimony needed to be made explicitly explaining that because of behavior so inconsistent with Friends' principles, William Jr. could no longer be owned as a Friend. The following month a testimony was read, approved, and ordered to be delivered to William Jr., along with acquainting him of his right to appeal to the quarterly meeting. At the next monthly meeting, 4/3m/1756, it was reported that the testimony had been delivered and William Jr. intended to appeal. But he didn't go to Quarterly Meeting to make his appeal, so "the meeting's judgment stands", Abington minuted in 2/9m/1756. The final step was reading the testimony after meeting for worship, and at the meeting 7/10m/1756 it was reported to have been accomplished. In the meantime, on 6/11m/1755 William Sr. was asked to come to the next monthly meeting on account of his son. But when William Sr. didn't show up, a committee was named to speak to him, 4/12m/1755. They reported back that William Sr. said he would come but he was ill. Friends thought a testimony ought to be drawn up and delivered to William Hibbs Sr., who said he didn’t mean to countenance his son's disorder or to slight the meeting, 5/2m/1756. So apparently this acknowledgment was sufficient and the charges were dropped.[31] A few years later the overseers reported that William [presumably Sr. since Jr was disowned] Hibbs "in public railed and villified holy men recorded in the scriptures of Truth". Friends agreed that a testimony be prepared, 4/1m/1759; the testimony was signed, and William said he would not appeal, 1/2m/1759; the testimony was reported read, 3m/1759.[32]

William is in the Northampton tax duplicate for 1761, assessed on £16.4.0.[33] William was named co-executor of his mother's will in 1737.

John West

Birth: 14 Dec 1590 Hampshire, England
Death: 1 Mar 1659 (aged 68) West Point, King William County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Burial Details Unknown

Memorial #: 152517278
Bio:
John West was born on 14 December 1590 in Hampshire, England, the fifth son of Sir Thomas West, second Baron De La Warr and Lady Anne Knollys, a cousin of Elizabeth I. A graduate of Magdalene College Oxford, he was one of four brothers who came to Virginia. These included Thomas West, Lord De la Warr, who was Virginia's first governor, and Francis West who was a later governor. John West arrived on the Bony Bess (sic) in 1618. After the massacre in March 1622 he commanded a company in attacks against the Indians.

He was elected to the House of Burgesses in the years 1628 to 1630, and then when lands became available upon the York River in 1630 he patented 600 acres at Chiskiack, east of Felgate's Creek, which land was later known as Bellfield, selling it after he left in 1650 to Edward Digges. He then moved to the area of the current city of West Point, Virginia, where in 1652 he patented 850 acres, subsequently in 1654 enlarging the patent to 3000 acres. Other patents included 1550 acres in 1651 along the south fork of the York River and 1000 acres on the northeast side of the Mattaponi River.

Very much a leader in the colony, he was a member of the council from 1631 to 1659, and a justice of York County in 1634. After the famous incident in which Governor Harvey was "thrust out" and sent back to England, John West being the senior member of the council was selected by the others and served as acting governor from May 1635 to January 1637. In 1637 together with four others he was ordered back to London to answer to the King for these activities but was cleared and in 1642 with Governor Berkeley's arrival was appointed at the king's direction to be Virginia's Muster‑Master. He married Ann (unknown) and they had a son named John born in 1632. In 1659 John West died at West Point, and the following year the House of Burgesses passed a resolution in honor of John West and the noble West family, ordering that the heir, his only child, young John West, be exempt from paying all levies during his lifetime.

Burial: Westover Plantation Cemetery, Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia, USA
Memorial #: 260881982

Bio:
The twice-widowed Jane Stith, now wife of the colonial aristocrat Major John Stith Sr., a First Family of the Virginia Colonies, is thought to be the daughter of Edward Mosby and his wife Hanna (last name unknown) Born in England 1624, she is first documented as "Ja. Gregory" by Firdinando Austin, February 13, 1653, along with her first husband Thomas Gregory, when Austin claimed headrights for paying their transportation to the new world.
In the latter part of 1656, and soon after the death of her second husband Joseph Parsons, Jane met and married John Stith. In 1663, after the death of Edward Mosby, John was made guardian of Jane's stepchild, Judith Parsons. John and Jane had at least the following Five children: Captain John Stith Jr., their first male child and heir to his father's fortune, married Mary Randolph, the daughter of Colonel William Randolph and Mary Royal Isham of Turkey Island; a second son, Lieutenant Colonel Drury Stith whom married Susanna Bathurst; a daughter Ann, second wife of the wealthy Colonel Robert Bolling Sr. of Kippax Plantation of Hopewell, Virginia; husband of first wife Jane Rolfe, granddaughter of Matoaka "Pocahontas"; a daughter Agnes, wife of Thomas Wynn, and Jane, wife of Captain Daniel Llewellyn.
Once poor and widowed, now a Colonial Dame, married into wealthy Virginia Society, Jane lived a life of luxury not unlike the Lords and Ladies of her English homeland. She is said to have died in the winter of 1685 at their James River plantation, however the location of her grave is still unknown, although historians reference Westover as her resting place.
The foregoing biographical information is a compilation of historical data as found in various writings of the era and not one particular source. § By C. Hileman

Maj William Davidson V Veteran

Birth: 10 Oct 1736 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA
Death: 16 May 1814 (aged 77) Swannanoa, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Piney Grove Cemetery, Swannanoa, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 28757645
Bio:
According to the Buncombe County Genealogical Society, Maj. William Davidson and his wife Margaret McConnell Davidson were originally buried on their property at the mouth of Bee Tree Creek where it enters the Swannanoa River and were later moved to Piney Grove.

Research by Holt Felmet disputes that the burial site wa moved to Piney Grove.

The land where the Charles D Owen Park is located is part of the land owned by William.

Inscription on DAR marker contains incorrect birth and death dates: William Davidson,Soldier of the Revolution. House of Commons 1790. Senate 1792. One of the Earliest Settlers of the French Broad Valley. He was prominent in the organization of Buncombe County.

Parents are John Davidson and his wife Jane (whose maiden name was likely Tucker). William was a twin to Samuel Davidson. He married Margaret in 1758.

His first child, Mary McConnell "Polly" Davidson, was born 4 Oct 1760. She married Col. Daniel Smith

Suggested edit: Maj William was one of five sons of John and Jane Davidson who fought in the Revolution and his first cousin on his father's side was Gen William Lee Davidson who died at the Battle of Cowan's Ford. Contributor: KatieMac (46896687) •

Death: May 16, 1814

Martha is fibbing about her age (she is at least 49). Whose child is McGilbra? Why is he living with them? Is Martha perhaps a WYATT? Otherwise, Lawrence ASHTON is very likely Martha's father. One secondary source treats McGilbra as a grandchild. Living two doors down from William C. HOLLAND, who is living next door to John L. HOLLAND.

William Young VVeteran

Birth: 15 Oct 1744
Death: 1834 (aged 89-90) Perry County, Tennessee, USA
Burial: Dickson-Blackburn Cemetery, Linden, Perry County, Tennessee, USA
Memorial #: 32649493

Bio:
Capt William Young, son of Thomas Young

According to his 1833 pension application, William Young was born in 1744, in what would later become York County, Pennsylvania. He was born to Thomas B. Young Esq., and his first, unknown wife.(1) They also had a daughter Mary about whom little is known. By 1755, when William was 11, his father moved, with William, and perhaps William's sister Mary, down the "Great Wagon Road" through the Shenandoah Valley, and then along the east front of the Blue Ridge Mountains, to South Carolina. His mother must have died before then, as the first child, George, of William's father Thomas and his new wife, Catherine Brandon, was born in South Carolina in 1755. They settled in the Ninety-Six District, in the area that would later become Laurens County. William and his father Thomas received land grants adjacent to each other; both were later, in 1774, sold to Joseph Whitmore.

During the Revolutionary War, William was commissioned as a Lieutenant in Captain Lewis Bobo's Company, in Colonel Thomas Brandon's Second Spartan regiment of South Carolina militia (Colonel Brandon was the brother of William's stepmother Catherine [Brandon] Young). He served a nine-month enrollment, in 1777, and during this term he was involved in a skirmish with the Cherokee Indians. Later, in Sept. 15, 1779, he was enrolled for another two months, as a Captain in Colonel Brandon's regiment; during this time he was at the siege and battle of Savannah. He later served another term of seven months as a Captain in Colonel Brandon's regiment, and was at the siege of Ninety Six, in May and June of 1781. Two months later, as a Captain, he was placed in command of Colonel Brandon's blockhouse on Fair Forest Creek, where he remained for 18 months, until the war's end.

William is believed to have married Margaret Haile (from the research of Melton Meek), the daughter of William Haile, a French Huguenot who had settled in South Carolina many years earlier, and who was a neighbor to the family (he owned property next to Col Brandon, William's step-cousin, later sold to William's father Thomas Young). They lived in the Ninety Six district (Ninety Six district later became Laurens, Union, Spartanburg, and several other Counties, in 1785). Their first known child, John (believed to have married Hannah Miller), was born in Ninety Six about 1775;(2) they also had daughter Catherine born 1788 (married Nathan Ragan), and son Samuel born 1792 (married Mary "Polly" Young). They may also have had sons James, Jesse, and Christopher, but this is uncertain.(3)

William's eldest son, John, married about 1800, and John's first child, William, was born, according to census records, in 1801, while the family was still in Union County South Carolina. By 1807, they had moved to Dickson County, in north central Tennessee. John Miller Young, the second son of William's son John, was born in Dickson County that year, 1807. William's second son Samuel, however, remained in South Carolina when the family moved to Tennessee. William's daughter Catherine may have married her husband Nathan Ragan while the family was in Dickson County, where she and her husband lived until sometime after 1830; by 1840, after William's death, Catherine and Nathan were in Hardeman County, TN.

William's stay in Dickson County must have been short; by 1810, the family had moved across the state line to Christian County, Kentucky, where they appear in the census record under William's name, and where John's next 3 children were born (John Miller Young, Thomas W., and Samuel. John's sons Charles and George were born, later, in Perry county, after 1818). The 1810 Christian County KY census record matches the ages of William and wife, John and his wife and children, and one unknown young woman (possibly daughter Catherine, who about this time married Nathan Ragan back in Dickson County).

According to William's daughter Catherine (Young) Ragan, as recorded in her 1860 application for her father's pension, the family had moved from Union County directly to Christian County KY; however this is incorrect. See note (4) below.

By 1820, the family was in Perry County Tennessee, where they appear in the census record, but in the household of William's eldest son John.

John died in 1830; William appears in the census record that year living with his daughter Catherine in Perry County. He applied for his pension 22 Oct 1833, in Perry County, and received his last disbursement on 6 May 1834; he must have died shortly after. He is buried in a large stone crypt in the Dickson-Blackburn cemetery in Linden, TN, next to his son John. Notably, he is listed as "William Young 3d" in his pension payment record. As his father was Thomas, this suffix probably refers to his grandfather (William I) and an uncle (William II).

(1) We know William was the son of Thomas from a story related by William's son Samuel. A "stranger," who identified himself as Thomas Young of Spartanburg, appeared at Samuel's gate, and after a short introduction explained that he had come in order to borrow money, needed to save his farm. This Thomas Young mentioned that he was the grandson of the Young who was "...the Tory that met your uncle Thomas Young in the middle of the Enoree River at the battle of Blackstock's farm in October, 1781." According to the memoirs of Major Thomas Young (Samuel's uncle), this incident, where he and his cousin Tory Col William Young confronted each other across a creek, actually occurred during a scouting expedition at Mudlick Creek, south of Laurens, in July or August of 1781. The Battle of Blackstock's Farm occurred a year earlier, in November 1780. The Thomas who was the "stranger" in this story was probably the son of Tory Col William Young's son Richard. Col William had one other grandson Thomas, the son of his son Nathaniel, but that Thomas emigrated to Giles County County, in 1818, probably too early to have been the Thomas in this story. Thomas, the son of Richard, remained in Union County, where he died in 1837.

(2) John's census record in 1820 in Perry County TN shows two males - John and William - aged 45 or older.

(3) From the research (family bibles, records) of Brent Holcomb and Melton Meeks

(4) Catherine died in 1861, one year after she wrote the pension application, wherein she indicated she was 85 years old, and her only surviving brother Samuel was 78 (she was actually 72, according to a Bible record, and Samuel was 68). She also admitted to "being old & her memory weak she cannot be positive as to dates." She also indicated the family moved directly from South Carolina, to Kentucky, in 1822, when we know the family had already passed through Kentucky, and were living in Perry County Tennessee at that time. She also mentioned that the family records had all been burned in a fire; this fact is repeated in family histories of other of William's descendants.
