Rev Josiah Stovall

Birth: 1749 Henrico County, Virginia, USA
Death: 20 Nov 1798 (aged 48-49) Lincoln County, Georgia, USA
Burial: Burial Details Unknown. Specifically: He is believed to be buried in a cemetery which was covered by a TVA lake. The development and creation of Clarke Hill Dam created a large reservoir that covered portions of Lincoln and nearby counties.

Memorial #: 133114621

Bio:
Josiah Stovall was born in 1749 in Henrico County or Lunenburg Co., Virginia. When he was a child, his family moved to Granville County, North Carolina. He married Mary Hicks in 1768 in Virginia. She was born on November 20, 1751 in Hanover Co., Virginia.

Josiah is listed in documents as being a Private in the Revolutionary War under the command of Colonel Richard Henderson’s Regiment in Captain James Yancey’s Company of Foot on the date of October 3, 1771. Josiah’s brothers; William, John Jr. and Drury are also in this unit.

A Farmer by trade, he moved his family to Lincoln County (was Wilkes County), Georgia in 1785 upon receipt of land as payment for military service during the American Revolution (see Miss. Rev. Soldiers, page 289-294 or Miss. Gen. Exchange, Vol. 6, page 3-5) Josiah and Mary had at least 17 children with three mentioned in his last will and testament; Polly, Drury and Charles. Later in an estate settlement in 1804, the following heirs were named; Polly (widow), Charles, David, Ralph, Josiah, William, Polly (daughter), Lewis, John, Elisha Holmes (for his wife Sally Stovall Holmes) and Charles Kennon (for his late wife Lucy Stovall Kennon) .
. His death is recorded in the Lincoln Co. GA., Book A, page 15. After Josiah’s death on November 20, 1798, his will, recorded on November 17 and probated on December 14, 1798 in Lincoln Co., Georgia, bequeath tools, Plantation, livestock, land and slaves to wife and children.

His wife, Mary moved to the area known as Spring Ridge Community near Mississippi Springs in Hinds County, Mississippi. She died there, December 12, 1845 and is buried in the Old Friendship / Stovall / Smylie Cemetery. Seven of the children moved to Alabama and Mississippi around 1811. (I have visited her grave.)

A letter written in 1845 and mailed to William T. Rattiff in Raymond, MS describes the obituary of Mary. The sum of the letter is the following; Mary died at the age of 96 on Friday, December 12th, 1845 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Tatum near Jackson, MS. The widow of Josiah Stovall of Georgia for nearly 50 years and a devout member of the Baptist Church for 78 years. She raised 17 children, 10 sons and 7 daughters, of whom 6 sons and 3 daughters died before she did.

Josiah Stovall

Birth: 1749
Henrico County
Virginia, USA
Death: Nov., 1798
Lincoln County
Georgia, USA

Josiah Stovall was born in 1749 in Henrico County or Lunenburg Co., Virginia. When he was a child, his family moved to Granville County, North Carolina. He married Mary Hicks in 1768 in Virginia. She was born on November 20, 1751 in Hanover Co., Virginia.

Josiah is listed in documents as being a Private in the Revolutionary War under the command of Colonel Richard Henderson?s Regiment in Captain James Yancey?s Company of Foot on the date of October 3, 1771. Josiah?s brothers; William, John Jr. and Drury are also in this unit.

After Josiah?s death in November 20, 1798, his will, recorded on November 17 and probated on December 14, 1798 in Lincoln Co., Georgia, bequeath tools, Plantation, livestock, land and slaves to wife and children.

She raised 17 children, 10 sons and 7 daughters, of whom 6 sons and 3daughters died before she did.

CPT Robert Alexander

Birth: 1743
Death: 1813 (aged 69–70)
Burial: Goshen Cemetery, Belmont, Gaston County, North Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 173282901
Bio:
Captain Robert Alexander, of Lincoln county, emigrated from Pennsylvania to North Carolina about 1760.
He commanded a company during the Revolution, in the Cherokee expedition, under General Rutherford; acted for several years as Commissary, and performed other minor, but important trusts for the county. He was one of the early band of patriots who met at Newborn on the 25th of August, 1774, and again attended the Convention at Hillsboro, on the 21st of August, 1775. After the war, he settled on his farm, one mile northwest of Tuckasege Ford, on the Catawba River. His residence was long a general stopping-place for travelers, and painted red—hence, it was widely known as the "Red House Place."
He was elected to the State Legislature consecutively from 1781 to 1787; and acted, for many years, as one of the magistrates of the county, showing the general acceptance with which his services were held. He died in 1813, aged about seventy years, and is buried in Goshen graveyard, Gaston county, N. C.

Birth: 1774 Wilkes County, North Carolina, USA
Death: 1866 (aged 91–92)
Burial: Mount Gilead Cemetery, Keller, Tarrant County, Texas, USA
Memorial #: 16874325

Bio:
Permelia "Milly" Lindsey Loving married Thomas Allen in 1796. She was born in 1774 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. I am a direct descendant of her husband Thomas Allen's father, Richard Allen. - information courtesy of Bob McEver.

Mr. Neace wrote of his grandmother Allen, "…many times she has recited to me the depredations upon her people by Tarleton and his men…One of her uncles named Sisk was killed at the battle of King's Mountain. Another uncle, Col. Linsy, had one of his hands cut off in a fight with Tarleton's troops. She saw the republic of America firmly established, and lived to see the same country convulsed with one of the greatest civil wars of modern times, and died in 1866 at the ripe age of 96 years…" She lies buried at Mount Gilead.

GARRETT, JACOB (1776-ca. 1842). Jacob Garrett, early settler and political figure, was born in Tennessee in 1776 and moved to Texas from Arkansas in 1824. He was a representative to the conventions of 1832 and 1833 from the Ayish Bayou District. He was one of the commissioners to raise troops in October 1835 and was appointed agent to collect money in the hands of officials due the Mexican government and to contract loans in the name of the General Council for the use of Texans. Garrett introduced to the council the last resolution for peace with Mexico. He died in Hot Springs, Arkansas, about 1842 and was buried there.

When I arrived in Texas in 1824 I found [it] so sparsely settled that there was no regulations in any legal form. As we had no knowledge of the Mexican laws we were a law unto ourselves. But as the country became more thickly settled it became manifest that there must be some rule to collect debts and punish crimes. The people agreed to elect a man whom they called an Alcalde and a Sheriff to execute his orders. The Alcalde's power extended to all cases civil and criminal without any regard to the amount in controversy. Murder, thefts, and all other cases came under his jurisdiction except divorces, and as the old Texas men and women were always true and loyal to each other, divorce cases was never heard of. The Alcalde had the power in all cases to call to his assistance twelve good and lawful citizens to his aid when he deemed it necessary or the parties required it, and the decision of the Alcalde and 12 men was final from which no appeal could be taken, and there was as much justice done then as there is now and not half so much grumbling. The first Alcalde was Baily Anderson, the next was John Sprowl. In 1830 Jacob Garrett was Alcalde, 1831 Elisha Roberts, 1832 Benjamin Lindsey, 1833 William McFarland, in 1834 Charles Taylor was Alcalde. I served as Sheriff under Roberts, Lindsey, McFarland and Taylor, but the year of thirty five called me to the tented field in defense of my country.

George D. Davidson was born on January 5, 1768 in Burke County, North Carolina to Major William and Margaret (McConnell) Davidson. He married Sarah McWhorter. They were the parents of seven children: Sarah, Hanceford, Alney, John P., Margaret M., George H., and Fidelus. It is likely that the 4 other children buried in the family cemetery are George and Sarah's children also - Dovey (died at age 5); Ruth (died at age 17); Ben J. (died at age 11); and William (died at 27). George D. died on Aug. 26, 1837 of milk fever, an illness which took several family members including his wife.

The family had moved from North Carolina to Franklin County in the early 1800's and later to Mississippi to raise cotton.

A letter from R.B. Davidson to his cousin Allen Davidson relates the family's tragedy after moving from Tennessee to Mississippi:

"Dec 18th 1892, Tennessee

My Dear Cousin Allen,

Did you know that we had an Uncle named George Davidson? He moved to Tennessee at the early part of this century, bringing his family from N.C. and settled in Franklin County. His wife's name was Sally McWhorter. After he had become old he moved to the State of Mississippi to cultivate cotton. Of the marriage there were sons Hance, Pinkney, Alney, George and Lawson and daughters Sally and Margaret. Sally first married Woods, by whom she had a son named Davidson who moved to Texas. I remember writing a letter to him in 1842 and Sally's husband having died; she married a second husband who lived in Alabama a little south of the Tennessee River. This husbands name was Holland, and I remember that my brother Sam & I enjoyed their hospitality from Saturday p.m. till Monday a.m. in Jan. 1838.

Margaret, the second daughter married John Hutton, a Dutchman who settled in this (Bedford) County prior to the removal of our Uncle George and his family to Mississippi.

Now came from Mississippi news of a scourge that swept nearly the whole family into their graves, except Hance and George. That is the parents of the family, and sons Pinkney, Alney and Lawson, all died suddenly of milk sickness. John Hutton hearing of the scourge in the family hurried off to Mississippi and suddenly dies of the same sickness...

I cease to write lest I weary you with much reading.

Kind regards to all my Kindred, Yours truly, R.B. Davidson"

MALONE AND ALLIED FAMILIES
By Dr. Randolph A. Malone
Page 13

William Malone, Sr. 3-1 (d. 1745 Surrey Co, VA) Lived in Southwark Parish north of the
Nottaway River along Southwester Swamp in Surry County very close to the Prince George County border and was already a landowner in 1718. He lived near Nathaniel Malone and adjacent to Christopher and Nathaniel Robertson, and also shows close ties to the Wynne family, as did Nathaniel. Robert Wynne witnessed both their wills. He deeded adjacent land to his sons and left his will in Surry County, proved in 1745.

Page 22
William Malone 3-1 was a Surry Co. land owner at least by 6-18-1718 when John Roberts deeded land to William Moor(e) on the north side of Nottoway River adjacent to William Malone. How long he had owned this land is not known. He had received an additional land grant by 9-5-1720 which was situated on the north side of the Nottoway River and bounded by the southeast side of Southwest Swamp, as described in a 1745 deed from his son John Malone 4-3 to his other son William Malone, Jr. 4-1 at William Malone Sr. 3-1 's. death. This may have been the same land which records show was actually patented to William Malone, Sr. on 9-5-1723, described in the Patent Book as being 195 acres on the north side of Nottaway River, beginning on the south side of Southwestern Swamp. On 3-17-1722 William 3-1 , with his wife Ann, deeded 100 acres on the north side of Nottoway River to William Moor(e).

It is important to note that all of the land dealings of William Malone 3-1 and his son William Malone 4-1 were described as being on the north side of Nottoway River, and/or adjacent to Southwest(er) Swamp, the Robertson family, and the other related neighbors. When one examines these records as a group and compares them with the records of William Malone 4-11, it is a relatively simple matter to distinguish between the two William Malones and their sons of the same name who lived in Surry/Sussex and Prince George/Dinwiddie Counties during this time period.

William Malone, Sr. 3-l's son William Malone, Jr. 4-1 owned land in the immediate Nottoway River and Southwest Swamp area as early as 1727, which abutted the property of Nathaniel Robertson. It is probable this had been also part of William Malone Sr.'s patent, because another deed in 1739 describes the land as being on the north side of Nottoway River and bounded by Southwest Swamp and William Malone. In addition, William Malone, Sr.'s land left by his will to son William, Jr. is described as joining Nathaniel Robertson's property also. On 3-20-1738 William Malone, Sr. deeded 100 acres to his son John Malone, which. was part of the land he was patented in 1723. Again, this was land which he owned on the south side of Southwest(er) Swamp.

Although these families of Malones and those living adjacent were all in a relatively small area and could have been called "neighbors", nowhere is William Malone, Sr. 3-1's, or William Malone, Jr.4-1 's property described as being on or adjacent to Stony River, as was the younger William Malone 4-11 who married Ann Booth. At the same time, the younger William Malone 4-11 (whose wife was Ann Booth) is never described as owning property on Nottoway River and Southwest Swamp, but he and his children are consistently shown as owners of Stony River property at the county line , and neighbors of George Booth , whose daughter this younger William Malone married. It is because of the consistency of these records that we realize that the William Malone who married Ann Booth is he who owned land on Stony River, was living adjacent to George Booth, (father of Ann Booth Malone), and was the son of Nathaniel Malone 3-3.

The 1736 will (probated 1745) of William Malone 3-1 left his property to his two sons William Malone, Jr. 4-1 and John Malone 4-3. To William, Jr. 4-1 he left 97 and one half acres "along a line of marked trees to Southwest Swamp thence up the said swamp to Nathaniel Robertsons deceased line ... " The other half of his property he left to son John, land "along the line that divides my son William and my son John to Southwest Swamp , thence down the said swamp to a beach tree ..." Bibliography of records concerning William Malone 3-1. Bibliography of records for William Malone 4-1, (who married Mary Hill, son of William Malone 2-1, indicating continuation of same property holdings. If one examines these records as well as those for William Malone 4-11 above, the problem is clarified.

Page 38
William Malone 3-1 (c 1670/1685 VA - 1745 Surry Co., VA), was probably a brother of Nathaniel Malone, Sr. 3-3 and possibly a son of Daniel Malone 2-1 and possible grandson of Daniel Malone 1-1 . William 3-1 married Anne ----· [135] In the first edition of this book your author... believed him to be a son of Nathaniel Malone 3-3. This is now proven to be
incorrect. The reader is referred to the chapter "The Two William Malones" for a detailed and documented explanation which will not be repeated here.

William Malone, Sr. 3-1 was born about 1675 - 1685, and was a contemporary of
Nathaniel Malone 3-3 . His birth date is suggested by the fact that his son William, Jr.
4-1 was old enough to be a land and patent owner by 1727, with a birth date by about 1705/6. [138b] William, Sr. 3-1 lived in the frontier parish of Southwark in the corner of Surry County near the Prince George County Line. The only parishes in Surry Co. at that time were Southwark and Lyons Creek. When Surry County was divided in 1752 this portion became Sussex County and Albemarle Parish. Fortunately, Surry and Sussex County records survived, as well as some Albemarle Parish records. Thus William Malone 3-1 and his childrens' records are available for study.

William Malone 3-1 was a Surry Co. land owner at least by 6-18-1718 when John Roberts deeded land to William Moor(e) on the north side of Nottoway River adjacent to William Malone. [130b] How long he had owned this land is not known. He had received an
additional land grant by 9-5-1720 which was situated on the north side of the Nottoway River and bounded by the southeast side of Southwest Swamp, as described in a 1745 deed from his son John Malone 4-3 to his other son William Malone, Jr. 4-1 at William Malone Sr. 3-1 's. death. [148c] This may have been the same land which records show was actually patented to William Malone, Sr. on 9-5-1723, described in the Patent Book as being 195 acres on the north side of Nottaway River, beginning on the south side of Southwestern Swamp. [136] On 3-17-1722 William 3-1, with his wife Ann, deeded 100 acres on the north side of Nottoway River to William Moor(e). [135] On 2-18-1722 Christopher Robertson was granted 80 acres of land on the north side of Nottoway River, on William Malone's corner. [134] Christopher (dec'd by 2-19-1727) [138b] was the father of Nathaniel Robertson, [138b] and a contemporary of William Malone 3-1. It was Nathaniel's son Drury Robertson who married Winifred Malone 5-24, daughter of William Malone 4-11 and his wife Ann (Booth) Malone. (See the "William Malone 4-1 1" Chapter.) It was Nathaniel Robertson's younger son Nathaniel who married Winifred Malone 5-10, granddaughter of William Malone 3-1 and daughter of William Malone 4-1. [165c, 161a, 1 54, 21b pp 64-67] Because of the close association of William Malone 3-1 with Christopher and Nathaniel Robertson, many researchers have felt that his wife was probably Ann(e) Robertson, though the author knows of no documentary proof of this assertion.

It is important to note that all of the land dealings of William Malone 3-1 and his son William Malone 4-1 were described as being on the north side of Nottoway River, and/or adjacent to Southwest(er) Swamp, the Robertson family, and the other related neighbors. This differentiates William Malone 3-1 and his son William Malone 4- l (who married Mary Hill) from William Malone 4- 11 (who married Ann Booth) and was the son of Nathaniel Malone 3-3.

William Malone, Sr. 3-1 's son William Malone, Jr. 4-1 owned land in the immediate Nottoway River and Southwest(er) Swamp area as early as 1727, which abutted the
property of Nathaniel Robertson. [138b] It is probable this had been also part of William Malone Sr.'s patent, because another deed in 1739 describes the land as being on the north side of Nottoway River and bounded by Southwest Swamp and William Malone.[145b] In addition, William Malone, Sr.'s land left by his will to son William, Jr. is described as joining Nathaniel Robertson's property also. [148b] On 3-20-1738 William Malone, Sr. deeded 100 acres to his son John Malone 4-3, which was part of the land he was patented in 1723. [144] Again, this was land which he owned on the south side of Southwest(er) Swamp.

On 5-3-1736 William Malone, Sr. wrote his will, which was probated on 10-16-1745. [148b] In it, he left his property to his two sons William Malone, Jr. 4-1 and John Malone 4-3 . To William, Jr. 4-1 he left 97 and one half acres "along a line of marked trees to Southwest Swamp thence up the said swamp to Nathaniel Robertsons deceased line ... " The other half of his property he left to son John, land "along the line that divides my son William and my son John to Southwest Swamp, thence down the said swamp to a beach tree ... " [148b]

The will is as follows:
Surry County Will Book 9, p 5 10 , Will of William Malone of Southwalk Parish dated 5-3-
1736, proved, 10-16-1745:

In the name of God , Amen , I William Malone of Southwark Parish in the County of Surry in the Colony of Virginia being weak in body but of sound Perfect and disposing mind and memory praise be therefore given to almighty God and calling to Remembrance the uncertain State of this transitory Life, and that all flesh must yeald unto Death, when it Shall please God to Call, Do make & ordain this my last Will and testament, hereafter Revoking all other Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made.

Beginning at a pine at Ganlers meadow thence along a line of marked trees to Southwest Swamp thence up the said swamp to Nathaniel Robertsons deceased line, thence along the said Robertsons line to my line, thence along my line to the beginning.

Item: I devise to my loving son John and his heirs forever the plantation that I now live on
and the land that belong to it which is Ninety Seven and a half Acres Beginning at the said
pine at Ganlers Meadow thence along the Line that divides my son William and my son John to South West Swamp thence Down the said Swamp to a beach tree a corner thence
along my line to the said pine at the Beginning. After the decease of my loving Wife Anne
or her marriage and also I give to my son John one feather bed and the furniture that belongs to it, which is called his Bed, and two cows and their increase.

Item: I devise unto my daughter Elizabeth and her heirs forever one feather bed and the funiture that belongs unto it, it is called her bed and one cow and calf and one ewe and lamb.

Item: (He devises a cow and calf also to daughters Hannah, Agnes, and Milley.)

Item: I devise unto my loving wife Anne all the rest of my estate... making her my hole and sole executrix of this my last will and testament.

In witness my hand and seal this third day of May 1736. William Malone (his mark).
Witness: Robert Wynne , Thomas Wynne. Copied from microfilm of the original will by the author. Also abstracted [125a p 37].

At the same time William Sr.'s will was being probated, his son John Malone 4-3 and wife Elizabeth "of Bath Parish in Prince George Co." made a deed of "lease and release" of his inherited land to his brother, William Malone, Jr. [148c] The most likely reason for this deed is that John Malone 4-3 was living in Prince George Co.(Dinwiddie Co. in 1752). He is shown moving in 1764 to land deeded him in Granville Co, NC, which later became Bute/Warren Co. Many researchers have believed that the Rev.War soldier John Malone (c 1734-1797), who married Mary, was the son of Willlam Malone, Sr., (this author included), but the above deed shows not only that William Malone 3-l's son John had a wife named Elizabeth, but that he also resided out of Surry Co in Bath Parish, Prince George County. He was also too old to likely be a Rev. War soldier, since he was a land owner in 1738. He would have been 60 or more years old during the time of the revolution.
We note that the witnesses of William Malone 3-l's will were Robert Wynne and Thomas Wynne, indicating a close association of William Malone 3-1 with the Wynnes as well as his probable brother Nathaniel Malone 3-3, who married the daughter of Thomas Wynne. Robert Wynne, son of Thomas Wynne, was a witness at both of their wills. The inventory of William's estate was made and received 10-12-1745 with Anne Malone as executrix. His

Williamson County, Tennessee - Slow down at mile 3.7 and check out the historic home on the right called Cottonwood or Hamilton Place, but also known as Caleb's Consort. The home reportedly was built in 1800, making it one of the oldest in this area. It derives its latter name from one grave in a nearby graveyard that reads to the memory of the "consort of Caleb Garrett," a prominent citizen in the early 1800s.

Jacob Graves (2) was born 1 Jan. 1783 in North Carolina (or possibly SC), died 9 March 1875 in Tippah Co., MS, and was buried in Shelby Creek Cem., on the Tippah Co.-Benton Co. line. He was a farmer and lived in Saulsbury, Tippah Co. He was in the 1840 Hardeman Co., TN census, and in Tippah Co. in 1860 and 1870. His full name may have been Jacob Thomas Graves.

He moved through TN and arrived in Tippah Co., MS in 1854. He bought land from Zadock Brewer and John Hopkins in 1858.

In the Tippah Co. Courthouse, Ripley, MS, is a probate packet titled "Thomas Graves, Dec.", but all papers included in it refer to Jacob Graves, Dec. An original document in it states: "Graves, Jacob (PR480), original bill 12 Sept. 1879. Jacob Graves of Benton Co. died 1876, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, and the following heirs: (a) W. C. Graves, a son, (b) J. E. Graves, a son, (c) F. M. Graves, a son, (d) H. L. Graves, a son, (e) James Simpson, Elizabeth Hobson (wife of Frank Hobson), children of Hettie Graves Simpson, dec., dau. of Jacob Graves, dec., (f) John Meeks and William M. Meeks, children of Catherine Meeks, dec., daughter of Jacob Graves, (g) Thomas Graves of Marshall, Searcy Co., Ark., and George Graves of Whitehall, Poinsett Co., Ark., sons of Jacob Graves, (h) Guy Meeks, a minor child of Catherine Meeks, (i) Jane McDowell, a minor child of Catherine Meeks, (j) Sarah Simpson, a minor dau. of Hettie Simpson, (k) Martha J. Brock, a dau. of Hettie Simpson, now the wife of Jacob Brock of Texas, (l) George Day, Laura Day, Eugenia Day, and Ellen Day, children of Martha Day, dec., and grandchildren of Jacob Graves, dec., all of Carthage, Jasper Co., Missouri."

Jacob first married Peggy Johnson probably about 1806. He married second Mary Counce (or Counts), daughter of John Counts, about 1821 (or 1824[1]). He married Elizabeth Brumley on 24 Jan. 1843. She was his third wife. She was born 1 Jan. 1806 in TN, died 27 Aug. 1884 in Tippah Co., and was buried in Shelby Creek Cem.

At the time of the 1820 Franklin Co., TN census, Jacob Graves was a widower with 7 children. (R-2, R-7, R-8, R-9, R-10, R-11)
