Thomas Harrison

Birth: 1647 North Yorkshire, England ?? See below ??
Death: 1716 (aged 68-69) Stafford County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Harrison CemeteryPrince William County, Virginia, USA
Memorial #: 137561514

Bio:
Baptised 20 Oct 1647 at St. Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey, London, England. ?? See above ??
Died before 1716.
Possibly buried in the Harrison family cemetery at Chopawamsic near his place of residence located near the Harrison family's Chopawamsic Plantation.
Some researchers apparently confuse him with "Thomas Harrison of Howden," buried in Apr. 3, 1716 in Yorkshire, though apparently different people.

Sometimes called "Capt. Thomas Harrison," though possibly confused with his nephew Capt. Thomas Harrison (1665- ), the son of his brother Burr Harrison.
Thomas Harrison and his elder brother Burr Harrison were sons of Cuthbert and Susannah Harrison who came from England to then Stafford County, Virginia (now Prince William County) and settled on the north side of Chopawamsic Creek.

Thomas Harrison's wife was three-quarters Native American, being the daughter of Cockacoeske, Queen of the Pamunkey, and Chief Totopotomoy (also called Toby West) who was the son of Lord de la Warr and Rachel Powhatan.

"The First Harrisons to come to Virginia, according to the best information obtainable, were Cuthbert Harrison, Esq., of Ancaster, Caxtn and Flaxby, Yorkshire, England, and his son, Burr, II, who according to the register of Dettingen Parish, Prince William County, Virginia, was baptised in the Parish of St. Margaretts, Westminster, England, on the twenth-eight of December, 1637, and on this register he is spoken of as "Burr Harrison of Chappawmsic". . . son of Cuthbert Harrison." when Cuthbert Harrison, Ind his son, Burr, II, first came to Virginia is unknown.
Cuthbert Harrison I, with his son, Burr II, settled in then Stafford County, Virginia, on the northern side of the Chappawamsic Creek near Dumfries and there today lies the old estate called "Cahappawamsic," with its quaint old grave yard, where once lived and now rest, so far as known, the first Harrisons of our line who came to America. Old deeds in Prince William and Stafford Counties show that in the latter part of the seventeenth century large tracts of land on the Chappawamsic Creek were granted to Burr Harrison, II.
The site of this estate is easily accessible from Washington. A ride of about an hour over the Southern Railroad brings one to Quantico and from Quantico to Chappawamsic Creek is only about one mile. Crossing the creek you turn inland and a ride of a few miles will bring you to a quaint old grave yard where now rest the earthly remains of the first Harrisons of Virginia."

WIFE OF THOMAS HARRISON
Born in or near the Indian village of Chopawamsic, home of the Pamunkey tribe. She was the daughter of Toby West, Chief Totopotomoy, and the Pamunkey Queen Cockacoeske.

Her Christian name is unknown but some researchers show her as Jane Totopotomoi, perhaps only a "placeholder name" but one as good as any. She married about 1671 Thomas Harrison (born 1647), brother of Burr Harrison, and was born circa 1648 (before 1655), the daughter of Cockacoeske and her first husband Toby West (Chief Totopotomoy).
Native American genealogy includes many fragmentary records and much supposition and theory. Historian William Deyo says that "Of the three women named Seth mentioned in John West's (1716) will, one may have been a daughter of his sister/or half-sister who married Thomas Harrison and the others would have been her grandchildren, OR all three could have been grandchildren."
The daughters of William Harrison and Jane Totopotomoi are thought have been:
1. "Ann" Harrison (or Daughter 1) (circa 1668) possibly married (George?) Short who is said to be the father of Seth/Sythia Elizabeth Short (born c1678) who married Thomas Harrison (1665-1746), son of Col. Burr Harrison (born 1637). If this is correct, Seth Short married her mother's first cousin.
2. Seth Harrison born circa 1670 (by 1671) who married Jacob Anderson, the son of David Anderson and wife Elizabeth, the widow of John Hallowes who had owned Burr Harrison's indenture. Their daughter was Seth Anderson who married Dr. Richard Bryant.
3. Margaret Harrison (circa 1672) who married Moses Linton and had a daughter Seth Linton who married Moses Quarles.
4.?Susannah Harrison (circa 1674)
(possibly confused with her aunt Susannah West who married Cornelius Dabney, official interpreter to Cockacoeske, as his second or third wife)
5. Daughter 5 (circa 1676) married Robert Blake and had Seth Blake (born circa 1695) who married first Henry Lucas and second John Summers.

2. Seth Harrison born circa 1670 (by 1671) who married Jacob Anderson, the son of David Anderson and wife Elizabeth, the widow of John Hallowes who had owned Burr Harrison’s indenture. Their daughter was Seth Anderson who married Dr. Richard Bryant.
3. Margaret Harrison (circa 1672) who married Moses Linton and had a daughter Seth Linton who married Moses Quarles.
4. Susannah Harrison (circa 1674) who married Cornelius Dabney, official interpreter to her grandmother Cockacoeske. She was his third wife.
5. Daughter 5 (circa 1676) married Robert Blake and had Seth Blake (born circa 1695) who married first Henry Lucas and second John Summers.

Thomas R Noe

Birth: 13 Nov 1806
Death: 1 Dec 1867 (aged 61)
Burial: Pine Springs Cemetery, Sulligent, Lamar County, Alabama, USA
Memorial #: 41249039

Bio:
This is the story about Thomas R. Noe and Mary Fitzgerald Noe that was sent to me by one of their descendants: "On December 1, 1867, Thomas R and Mary Noe were murdered in their Pine Springs Community home, along with a Dr. DeGraffenreid who had come to their home to tend a sick grandson. A man named Briggs had recently been released from the asylum and had been allowed to stay overnight in an out building. The grandson had been frightened of the man and had crawled beneath his bed when when he heard Briggs enter the house. When the black man who worked for the Noes came the next morning to light the lamps and start the fire to prepare breakfast, he found the bodies of Robert and Mary Noe and the doctor. The young boy crawled from beneath the bed, and he and the hired man ran to report the murders to the authorities. Briggs was captured, hiding in the loft of a barn and led authorities to where he had hidden the murder weapon, an axe handle that had been drying near the fire . . . The murder of the Noes is common knowledge not only among Noe decendants in Lamar County but among many residents in the community. The double headstone in the Pine Springs Cemetary north of Sulligent, Lamar County, with the same date of death for Thomas R and May Noe, stands as a silent testimonial to this tragic event. At one time the murder weapon was in the Sulligent Museum but later was sold at an auction to a Noe relative."--email from Judy Clonts

Thankful Lamb

Birth: unknown
Death: unknown
Burial: Browning Cemetery, North Stonington, New London County, Connecticut, USA
Memorial #: 25458002
Bio:
A stone carved with the initials "T L" is to the right of David Lamb's gravestone. David's first wife was Thankful and probably that fieldstone and the carved initials indicate the place of her burial. Her son John was baptised in 1721 and her daughter Sarah was baptised in 1722. Unless other children were born, Thankful may have died around that time. David Lamb married on 25 Jan. 1737/8 in Stonington, CT to Esther Smith.

What was Thankful's maiden name and who were her parents? Seek any further information.

William Hibbs, b. 1699/1700; said to have d. 31 Jan. 1789, but this seems rather to be the date of his son's death; m. between 7/1m/1727 and 4/2m/1727/8 in Middletown MM Ann CARTER.[23] Because William1 had died when William2 was still a very young lad, when he grew up and had a son he was called William Senior, and his son William Jr.

Children of William and Ann (Carter):[24]

a) Susanna Hibbs3, b. 22/11m/1728;
b) Hannah Hibbs, b. 6/4[?]m/1730; may be the Hannah Hibbs who m. James COOPER and was the grandmother of the author James Fennimore Cooper.
c) Phebe Hibbs, b. 14/2m/1732; in the will of Thomas NELSON of Middletown, dated 4 June 1753, pr. 4 Aug. 1753, left bequests to "friend Phebe Hibbs daughter of William Hibbs and her son Valentine Nelson, alias Hibbs and any child or children of hers begat by me" also Naomi Nelson alias WILDMAN, daughter of Hannah Wildman; and sister Ann WILSON "as long as she remains Ann Wilson or goes to live with her husband again"; Thomas gave real estate to Valentine Nelson alias Hibbs.[25] Friends minuted that Phebe's behavior was "so disagreeable to truth that friends can do nothing but testify against her", 2/2m/1752.[26] Eight years later, still unmarried, Phebe brought a paper condemning her action, but after consideration, and consultation with the men, it was not accepted.[27]
d) Sarah Hibbs, b. 4/1m/1734; it may have been this Sarah who paid a substitute fine for her brother, a breach of Friends' peace witness. Her paper acknowledging and condemning her action was accepted by Friends 4/5m/1780.[28]
e) William Hibbs, Jr. b. 2/10m/1735; disowned 2/9m/1756 for highway robbery. See below.
f) James Hibbs, b. 7/10m/1737; d. d. 31 Jan. 1789 In his will, dated 12/9m/1785, he identified himself as William Jr. of Northampton township. He did not name his wife. Son Benjamin was made executor. William named his son Nehemiah's children; and his own sons James and William, and daughters Anna WORSTALL, Abigail PARSONS, and Ann SMITH.[29]
**********?? this is the father's will - not James's ??**********
g) Ann Hibbs, b. 12/9m/1739;

The Middletown Monthly Meeting overseers reported that a complaint was brought against William Hibbs Sr. by Margaret THORNTON for refusing to settle long-standing accounts with her and her late husband Joseph, 6/2m/1755; they were reported settled 6/3m/1755.[30] Later that year William Hibbs Jr. was accused by John WILLIAMS of robbing him on the road at night. William Jr. denied the robbery, and came to monthly meeting but was unable to clear himself. Friends decided 4/12m/1755 that a testimony needed to be made explicitly explaining that because of behavior so inconsistent with Friends' principles, William Jr. could no longer be owned as a Friend. The following month a testimony was read, approved, and ordered to be delivered to William Jr., along with acquainting him of his right to appeal to the quarterly meeting. At the next monthly meeting, 4/3m/1756, it was reported that the testimony had been delivered and William Jr. intended to appeal. But he didn't go to Quarterly Meeting to make his appeal, so "the meeting's judgment stands", Abington minuted in 2/9m/1756. The final step was reading the testimony after meeting for worship, and at the meeting 7/10m/1756 it was reported to have been accomplished. In the meantime, on 6/11m/1755 William Sr. was asked to come to the next monthly meeting on account of his son. But when William Sr. didn't show up, a committee was named to speak to him, 4/12m/1755. They reported back that William Sr. said he would come but he was ill. Friends thought a testimony ought to be drawn up and delivered to William Hibbs Sr., who said he didn’t mean to countenance his son's disorder or to slight the meeting, 5/2m/1756. So apparently this acknowledgment was sufficient and the charges were dropped.[31] A few years later the overseers reported that William [presumably Sr. since Jr was disowned] Hibbs "in public railed and villified holy men recorded in the scriptures of Truth". Friends agreed that a testimony be prepared, 4/1m/1759; the testimony was signed, and William said he would not appeal, 1/2m/1759; the testimony was reported read, 3m/1759.[32]

•Note:
! He moved from Kentucky to Illinois for a brief period, then on to Moniteau Co. Missouri, where he died.
!It seems strange that William would be married in Boyle co., which is far removed from Hopkins Co., KY where his first children were born. Boyl is in the center of the state, while Hopkins Co. lies in the extreme western portion called The Purchase. The copy of the marriage license does not mention the county in which it was issued, but it does verify the date of issue. The marriage was no doubt performed a few days later. Materials about this part of the Loving family came from Mr. William B. King of Seattle, Washington; Thomas E. Lovan of Morton's Gap KY, and Mrs. Ruth Colby of Burlington, IA.
!William Ransom Loving's will was dated 8 May 1852 and it names each of his children, leaving the bulk of his estate to Abigail, "for her many years faithful care and attention in supporting me" and bequeathing to each of the others exactly one dollar each -- "having made them other advancement out of my estate." It seems obvious that William had been in poor health for many years prior to making his will and he lingered on another five years, dying in 1857. The date of the will coincides with the year of Abigail's marriage to Jeremiah Cooper and may have influenced her decision in that she was assured of inheriting the farm of 60 acres plus all of William's stock, the house and all the furnishings. Abigail was appointed executor of his estate. The will made a permanent record in the will book of Moniteau Co., MO on 14 oct 1857, pages 134, 135. William was illiterate and made his X in the presence of witnesses Lashby L. Wood and B. F. McCalester.

Col Thomas Harrison IV VVeteran

Birth: 1704 Stafford County, Virginia, USA
Death: 1774 (aged 69-70) Stafford County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Harrison CemeteryPrince William County, Virginia, USA
Memorial #: 74802936

Bio:
Col Thomas Harrison IV, husband of Ann Grayson Quarles Harrison; son of Col Thomas Harrison III, grandson of Burr Harrison II, great-grandson of Cuthbert Harrison I of Westminster, London, England who immigrated to Virginia. Beleived to be buried in the historic Harrison Family Cemetery that is contained within the grounds of the Quantico National Cemetery and Marine Base in Virginia. The government acquired 50,000 acres in 1942 to expand the Marine Base, and with it took over many old family cemeteries. Most of the original markers for the Harrison ancestors buried here no longer exit, however descendants placed a Memorial Marker recognizing a few of those believed to be buried on the grounds of the old Harrison family plantation that was then located in what was part of Stafford County.

Notes for George DERREBERRY

Biography

George Derryberry was one of seven "first-generation" Derryberry men who appear in the records of Burke Co., NC prior
to 1800. He appears to have been one of the younger of these men, and did not marry until after 1800. We presume he
was the lone male in the household of widow Anne Derryberry in the 1800 census, at which time he was age 26-44 years, placing his birth between 1756 and 1774. Given the fact that he married late, that his wife was considerably younger, that his brother Andrew was born about 1765, and that his brother Daniel, likely the very youngest, was born about 1771, a resonable estimate of George's birth date might be 1768, between Andrew and Daniel in the birth order. We do not know when his parents migrated from New Jersey or Pennsylvania to North Carolina, but it likely occurred sometime in the 1760's, and so we cannot be sure where he was born.

Because of the presence of a second George Derreberry of similar age, distinguishing the two Georges in the early
records is difficult. There is a special section below dedicated to sorting out the two men in the pre-1807 records.
Described here are the results as they pertain to this man.

Based on our estimated birth year of 1768 above, George was of age by about 1789. By this time, his brother Andrew had married and was living on his own, leaving George as the older of the two brothers in his mother Anne's household in
1790. Although Anne is the named head of household in 1790 and 1800, it is George who appears in the tax lists for
1793-1795, in the Silver Creek area of Burke Co. The three Derryberrys listed in those years were Hannah, George and
Andrew. (There are no surviving tax lists for the Silver Creek area for the period 1796-1801.)

Following Daniel's marriage about 1798, George became the only son left in Anne's household in 1800. George himself
married about 1801, to a woman named Nancy whose maiden name is unknown. They seem to have left the Silver Creek area, since George is listed in the 1804-1806 Burke Co. tax lists in Capt. Dysart's company, which was in the west Burke / east McDowell area. George probably died in early 1806, since he is not listed on Dysart's tax list in 1807 or later. Burke Co. court records from Jan 1807 include the administration bond for George's estate:

"We acknowledge ourselves justly indebted unto James Greenlee Esq. as presiding member of the County Court of Burke in the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds, and to be void on conditions that the Nancy O'Kelly formerly Nancy Derreberry, widow of George Derreberry Deceased, and Elijah Largent, shall will and justly administer on all and singular the goods and chattells rights and credits of the said George Derreberry Dec'd, and a just and free inventory of the same return within ninety days from the date hereof, and all the just debts to pay. Otherwise to remain in full force and
vesture[?] Given under our hands and seals 28th Jan 1807. [Signed Nancy O'Kelly, Elijah Largent, Thoma Largent, and
James Hennes(?).]"

Court minutes from the same session, abstracted by Peggy Dale Chapman in "Diehl Descendants" by same, p. 67:
"...George Derreberry deceased to Nancy OKelly the widow and relict of George Derryberry decd and Elijah Largent who
gave bond with approved Security in the Sum of 250 [pounds] ordered that the Estate be sold agreeable to law.
Maintenance: Ordered that Robert McElrath, Elisha Dossey, Charles Pearson be the freeholders and look to Poor be the
Justices to lay off one years provision for the widow and family of Geo Derryberry Decd for one year and report..."

A family Bible from the O'Kelley family notes that "Francis M. O'Kelley married the widow Dearaberry 1808." This
almost certainly refers to George's widow, despite the fact that they probably married in 1806 and not 1808. The same
Bible notes that Francis and Nancy had three children together, two daughters and a son. The 1810 and 1820 censuses
note five daughters altogether and no sons born by 1810, and so we can surmise that George and Nancy had three
daughters of their own, and no sons. Two of these daughters must be the Susannah and Charity Derreberry who
co-migrated with the O'Kelley family to Rhea Co., TN by 1850. (This is all consistent with the court records above,
which note that George had a "widow and family.") George's widow Nancy died sometime before 1830, in which year
Francis remarried.

Others of Same Name

There were two George Derreberrys in Burke Co. of similar ages, and care must be taken to distinguish them. One of
them was likely the son of Anne, and therefore one of the original seven, "first-generation" Derryberrys. The other
was likely the son of Hannah (and John). One of them married Nancy about 1801 and died relatively young in 1806, and
the other married Elizabeth McElrath about 1797 and died quite old in 1849. Therefore, all records of a George after
1806 must refer to Elizabeth McElrath's husband, and it is the period prior to that that we must be concerned about.

In the 1790 census, there are no George Derryberrys listed, and so both Georges were probably living with their
respective mothers. Both of Anne's sons were listed as over 16 years of age, while two of Hannah's three sons were
listed as under 16 years of age. Since one of Hannah's sons, John, begins appearing in land records in the early
1790's, he must have been the oldest of her sons, making George one of the sons under 16.

We can estimate that the single George Derryberry listed in the 1800 census, Burke Co., was the husband of Elizabeth
McElrath due to the presence of a wife and son in the household. Later records of Nancy and her family suggest that
she and her husband George had only daughters, all born 1802 and afterwards. Although that 1800 census is listed
alphabetically rather than by order of visitation, George is listed close to Hannah and Hannah's son Michael, in the
Silver Creek area. This suggests that the George in the 1800 census, husband of Elizabeth McElrath, was the son of
Hannah. This is further supported by the following land record:

"Land entry 3828 (10 Feb 1800). George Derryberry, 100 a on Silver Creek bounded by John Derrebery line, John Deal's
corner, and John George Hipps line including the vacancy between the lines for compliment. Warrant 26 Jul 1800.
Survey 24 Aug 1800, bounded by John Derebery on the west, George Deal on the north, and George Hips on the east.
Witnesses: John Derryberry, Jacob Hipps."

The John Derreberry named in the above record must have been Hannah's son, and the proximity of the property to George and Jacob Hipps suggests this was very near Hannah's own land described in earlier records. We surmise, again, that the George named in the above land record was the husband of Elizabeth McElrath, son of Hannah and brother of John.

Given that George, husband of Nancy, was not married in 1800, he was probably the lone male living in the household of
widow Anne in that census. Anne does not appear in the pre-1800 Burke Co. tax records, but a George does, as does
Hannah. We therefore surmise that the lone George Derryberry listed in the 1793-1795 Burke Co. tax records, from the
Silver Creek area, was Anne's son and later Nancy's husband.

There are no surviving tax lists for the period 1796-1801, but when tax records resume in 1802, there are two George
Derryberrys listed: one in the Silver Creek area (Simpson's, Whetstone's, and Neill's companies) for the period
1802-1809 but not 1810 on, and one in the west Burke / east McDowell area (Dysart's company) for the period 1804-1806 but not 1807 on. Since Nancy's husband died in 1806, there can be no doubt that the George in west Burke was Nancy's husband, while the George in Silver Creek was Elizabeth McElrath's husband. (This is counterintuitive since it means the George in Silver Creek for 1793-1795 was not the same George in Silver Creek in the period 1802-1809.)

Further confusion can arise since Elizabeth McElrath's husband George, who disappears from the Silver Creek lists after
1809, eventually ended up in what became McDowell Co., where Nancy's husband George had been living in 1804-1806.

These records are imprecise, and admittedly the interpretations above leave some inconsistency. However, this seems to be the most likely interpretation of the records. A case can also be made for Elizabeth McElrath's husband being one
of the "original seven" and Nancy's husband being the son of Hannah, but the interpretation here seems be slightly more
likely given the available data.

2. Thomas raised a family of 6 girls & 2 boys on farms in Granville & Warren Counties, NC, and Mecklenberg County, VA. Daughters, Nancy married John Malone in 1787 & Judah married Matthew Bates in 1792. In 1795 those families moved with Thomas, wife Mary & the other children to Jefferson County, TN where his brother Frederick had recently moved. In 1797 daughter, Sarah married Joseph Witt & in 1801 Thomas moved his family including the 3 married daughters to Washington County, KY where, in 1802, daughter, Elizabeth married Simon Malone. Sons Thomas Jr, & Merdith, married in Adair County, KY, raising families of 3 boys & a girl & 5 boys, respectively. Thomas & Mary were in Crocus, Adair County when they died in 1831. In 1837 Thomas Jr. filed suit against his siblings claiming ownership of the farm as his due for taking care of his parents during their later years.

John Malone

Birth: 1765
Death: 1859 (aged 93–94) Taylor County, Kentucky, USA
Burial: Malone CemeteryCasey County, Kentucky, USA
Plot: per research information, but not confirmed
Memorial #: 115335664
Bio:
Probably born North Carolina or Virginia in 1765 or before. Married Ann "Nancy" Earles, 17 Sept. 1787, Warren Co., North Carolina. Arrived in Kentucky around the year 1793 and settled near the town of Bradfordsville (at that time, a part of Washington County, but now in Marion County).
Some references state that his father was George Booth Malone but this is not confirmed.
The United States Census of 1810 for Washington County, KY, lists: John Malone, head; 2 males less than 10; 2 males 16 - 26; 1 male over 45; 2 females less than 10; 2 females 16 - 26; 1 female 25 - 45. This census also lists 2 families headed by an older and younger Simon Malone, who could have been his father and brother (Elizabeth Earles, the sister of John's wife, was married to a Simon Malone; the two Simon Malone's were listed as tax payers in Washington Co. in 1800).
United States Census of 1820 for Washington County, KY, lists: John Melone, head; 1 male 10 - 16; 1 male 16 - 18; 2 males 18 - 26; 1 male over 45; 2 females 10 - 16; 1 female 26 - 45. Not found on subsequent censuses. John Malone is not found in records after 1820 until his estate settlement of 1859. However, that settlement may have actually been for a grandson of the same name (a son of Rueben) who died the same year.
F.A.G. contributor and family researcher C.J. Malone adds: "As far as I can tell, John Malone who died in 1859 is buried in the Malone cemetery near Jacktown and Bradsfordsville, KY."
Many of his descendents would remain in Kentucky (Marion, Taylor, and Casey Counties), while others moved on to Macoupin Co., Illinois, and Crawford County, Missouri.
Children (not all accounted for):
Reuben Malone [born ca. 1788, prob. Warren Co. NC, died aft. 1860 Taylor Co., KY; married Jane Coppage, Mar. 1812, Washington Co., KY]
Sarah "Sallie" Malone Coppage [1791-1854]
Ann "Nancy" Malone Tongate [1792-1876]
Micajah ("Cage") Malone [born 27 Mar. 1793, prob. Washington Co., KY; died 6 June 1847, Raywick Precinct, Marion Co., KY; married Susan Batsel 16 Mar. 1819, Marion Co., KY (she lived 1801-29 Oct. 1839); reportedly, at one time Micajah was Sheriff of Marion Co., KY]. The Census of 1850 finds a number of their children living in various households in Marion County. Among his many children were a son also named Micajah Malone [1830-1920] who moved to Illinois. Another son, Quinton C. Malone [1837-1859] also went to Illinois. Son, John M. Malone [1834-1904] remained in Kentucky.
Mary "Polly" Malone
(per census of 1820, a male age 16-18, possibly John Malone. who was born 1804 ?)
Thomas C. Malone
Charlotte Malone
Another possible relative (brother of John ?) was a Richard Alexander Malone, b. VA, 1766; mar. Eve McDonald; relocated to KY ca. 1797, recorded by family members to have lived in Washington County (possibly being the Richard Malone recorded there on the census of 1820, age 45+, but apparently the only person in the household. Later relocated to Pulaski Co., MO; found there on the censuses of 1840 age 70-80, 1850 age 83 invalid and blind, and 1860 age 94). Richard was somehow linked with families named Arthur, Constable/Constible, and Wright (some of these named are also linked to the family of John Malone.
