Mary Jane Dinsmore Lindsey

Birth: 1779 Spartanburg County, South Carolina, USA
Death: 10 Mar 1853 (aged 73–74) Oakville, Lawrence County, Alabama, USA
Burial: Lindsey Memorial Garden Cemetery, Oakville, Lawrence County, Alabama, USA
Memorial #: 74196640
Bio:
Mary Jane Dinsmore Lindsey was the daughter of David and Margaret Dinsmore, who came from Northern Ireland to Charleston aboard the "Earl of Donegal" on 10 Dec. 1767. David claimed land on Jamey's Creek of the Tyger River in what was then 96 District, later Spartanburg Co., where Mary Jane was born.

During the Revolution, David took the Loyalist side and was exiled to Rawdon, Hants Co., Nova Scotia, when Charleston fell. His wife Margaret moved with her children John (m. Phebe [Woodruff?]) and Mary Jane (m. Mark Lindsey) to Wayne Co., Kentucky, in 1800. Mark and Mary Jane then moved to Morgan Co., Alabama, in 1819, where they settled near the Crowdabout community on the border of Lawrence and Morgan Co. John Dinsmore and wife Phebe moved around the same time to Lawrence Co., where their son David Lewis Dinsmore was county treasurer for a number of years.

In addition to John and Mary Jane, David and Margaret Dinsmore also had children Mary (m. Nathaniel Woodruff), James, and a daughter who m. James Woodruff.

Mark and Mary Jane Dinsmore Lindsey are buried on what was the farm of their son Dennis at Oakville in Lawrence Co.

Note that though Mary Jane's tombstone says she died on 10 March 1855, the appeal to administer her estate is dated 25 March 1853, and all other documents pertaining to her estate are also dated in 1853. It appears that the tombstone has the year of death wrong by two years.
Inscription: Mary Lindsey departed this life March 10, 1855, aged 74 years.

From LaVelda Faull - e-mail 4/13/99:
Another theory:
William Hawks was born ca 1750 in Virginia, probably Amelia . I believe he was the son of Abraham and Lucy Hawks of Amelia . I'll go into all of that later. Also, I'll give you info on the Hawks in NC and SC that I have. Anyway to begin with, I don't have very good dates on William Hawks Sr.'s children. William Hawks married Rebecca Laffoon, daughter of Matthew and Mary (___) Laffoon Sr. probably ca 1775 in Brunswick or Lunenberg Counties, Virginia. There is proof in court records that she was the daughter of Matthew Laffoon. William Hawks was in Patrick, Virginia, Surry, NC, and Greenville and Pendleton, SC before moving to Green, Kentucky.

William Hawks, Sr. died in 1814 in Green, Kentucky (Inventory Will Book 2, p 60-1 dated July 1814), Administratrix was widow Rebecca Hawks. Rebecca was born ca 1755-60 in Brunswick, VA and died ca 1818-20 in Green, Kentucky.

William and Rebecca (Laffoon) Hawks Sr. had the following children:

1. Joseph Hawks - Born before 1775 (per the 1820 Green, KY census). I know very little about Joseph.
2. George Hawks, Sr. - Born between 1784-94; married 28 Feb 1806 in Green Co, KY to Jemima Dobson.

3. William W. Hawks, Jr. - Born 1784-90; Married 1)Betsy Lewis on 28 Oct 1811 Green, KY, daughter of Edward Lewis, Bondsman: Matthew Laffoon; Married 2) 1 March 1838 Green, KY to Charity Bybee; Died 15 Jan 1844 in Green, KY (Estate appraised Order Book 9 p 406 Green, KY).

FROM LAVELDA FAULL 4/13/99:

Before I get into all of the information on William Hawks, Sr., I'll start with data from deeds and court records in Green, KY on his children. So here goes some documentation (I abstracted all of this myself from the originals in the courthouse).

1810 GREEN CO KY CENSUS
William Hawks 1 male 45 plus; 2 females under 10; 2 females 16-26; 1 female 26-45; 1 female 45 plus (Note: the sons were out on their own by this time)
Roll No. 6 Page 256

Green KY Deed Book 4 p 258
4 April 1805. William Hawks to William Green and Eliza his wife, for 75 lbs, 156 acres Goldsby Davis northwest corner in the Barrens which is a corner also for Jacob Bale, then due west course with a line already made to William Mumford, then northwardly to a corner made on Mumford's line for William Matthews, Jr., eastwardly with said line to Jacob Bale in the Barrens. No acknowledgement. No recording date.

Green KY Deed Book 6 p 250
3 Nov 1811. William Hawks to George Hawks, 75 lbs, 156 acres in Green Co (same land description as above deed).
It would appear that William Green and Eliza his wife did not buy the land after all? Or did they sell it back to William?

Green, KY Deed book 5 p 110.
22 July 1811. William Hawks came into court and resigned his office of constable. George Hawks is appointed constable whereupon he together with Joseph Dobson and Edward Lewis his securities executed and acknowledged bond as the law directs and the said George Hawks has the proper oaths administered to him.

Notes for Adam DERRYBERRY

Biography

Adam Derryberry was one of seven "first-generation" Derryberry men who appear in the records of Burke Co., NC prior to
1800. Based on the 1830 census, when Adam's age was given as 80-89, we know that he was born between 1740 and 1750, probably in New Jersey. Adam is not mentioned after 1830, and so we know he died between 1830 and 1840, probably in Maury Co., TN where he lived at the time.

Adam served in a local North Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War. Canceled payment vouchers for his service
in the Third Chickamauga Expedition, dated September 1783, can be found in the State Archives of North Carolina at
Raleigh. These vouchers were redeemable to pay taxes and land entry fees. Adam entered 100 acres of land on Mill
Creek, off the Catawba River in Burke Co., NC, on 5 Dec 1784, and it is possible he used his war vouchers to assist
with the fees for this land. We further know that Adam owned land prior to that purchase, since a land record dated 3
Mar 1778 issued to John Franklin describes 200 acres including an undescribed improvement that Franklin purchased from Adam.

Adam seems to have remained in Burke Co. until about 1795, since he is on the census and tax records there during that period. (His daughter Elizabeth, born about 1792, claims to have been born in Kentucky or Tennessee, but this seems unlikely since Adam is on the 1792 tax list in Burke Co.) In the period 1795-1796 Adam appears on tax lists in Russell Co., VA, and from 1797-1800 in Garrard Co., KY. This route almost perfectly follows the access trails from Morganton, NC to the Cumberland Gap in Virginia, and then the Wilderness Road from there to Kentucky.

Between 1800 and 1802, Adam migrated south to Tennessee, settling in an area of Williamson Co. that in 1807 would
become Maury Co. Family legend states that Adam and his family first settled in the Harpeth River bottom lands.
Following an outbreak of typhoid fever that is said to have claimed the lives of some of his children, the family moved
from there to a homestead 2 miles north of Duck River and west of Flat Creek, now between the hamlets of Rally Hill and
Kedron, in 1802. (From 1836 to 1903, this was in Civil District 23.) Adam there built a two-story log house called
Pineview that was still standing by January 1991 when it was entered in the National Register of Historic Places, the
oldest free-standing edifice in Maury Co. Unfortunately, the house has since been demolished.

No document names Adam's wife; although family tradition states her name was Eve Liggett, her name remains unknown.
Eight children are known, born between 1779-1802. The 1790 census suggests at least three other children (two
daughters and a son) who may have died young, perhaps during the above-mentioned fever epidemic.

Adam and his wife are said to be buried in the Derryberry Cemetery, across New Lasea Road from the former home. A
monument to them has been erected by descendants, since the original fieldstones that marked their graves had been lost since the 1950's.

1790 US census, 7th Co., Morgan Dist., Burke Co., NC
Adam Dinbery (1 male >16, 3 males <16, 5 females)

The "Adam Dinbery" in the census above is enumerated close to John Franklin, who is mentioned in the land record
mentioned above. From this census it will be assumed that Adam's household consisted of himself, a wife, 3 sons under
16 years of age, and 4 daughters. Note 7th Co. Militia in 1790 was in mid-Burke Co., the area of Quaker Meadows. It
is now in Caldwell and Alexander Cos. [Location of Militia Companies in 1790 Census in "Journal of the Burke County
Genealogical Society", VI-4, p. 76 (1987).]

Burke Co., NC Tax Lists:
1792, Cpt. Henry Hilan's Co.: Adam Derebary

Adam's daughter Elizabeth consistently claims to have been born about 1792 in Kentucky or Tennessee, but this is
unlikely given Adam's appearance on the Burke Co. tax list above. It is possible Elizabeth was born later, perhaps
1796 or 1797, in Kentucky, or that she was actually born in North Carolina. In any case, Adam left Burke Co., NC
sometime between 1792 and 1795, when he appears in Russell Co., VA, joined by his probable brother Michael Derryberry.

Russell Co., VA Personal Property Tax Lists (Lower District)
1795, Adam Derryberry (2)
1796, Adam Derryberry (2) and Michael Derryberry (2)

The above tax lists indicate that in 1795 and 1796 Adam had in his household one other tithable member (male age 16-21
years). That must have been his son Jacob. In addition, because Michael joined him in 1796 and the two left Virginia
the following year (neither appears in the 1797 VA tax lists), they were very likely close family members, and probably
brothers.

Adam and his family do not appear in the 1800 census in NC, and the census returns for VA do not survive. He does,
however, appear on a tax list from Garrard Co., KY (as "Adam Derryberry") dated 6 Aug 1800. ("Second Census" of
Kentucky chapter D p. 78). Michael could not be found in the same source. This indicates Adam probably left Virginia
for Kentucky about 1796 or 1797.

He does not appear on any surviving census returns from 1810. He seems to have left Kentucky for Williamson Co., TN
between 1800 and 1802. His family appears to have remained in Williamson Co., TN, part of which became Maury Co. in
1807, as evidenced by tax records below and marriage records of son Jacob and three probable daughters. Sons John,
Jacob, Daniel, and Andrew are listed in the US census for Maury Co. 1820, as is Adam himself, with a young man,
probably younger son Thomas, living with him.

Williamson Co., TN Tax Lists:
1802 Adam Derryberry, 2 white poles, 0 black
1803 Adam Derryberry (1,0), Jacob Derryberry (1,0), Samuel Derryberry (1,0)
1805, p. 15, names listed in following order: William Davis, Elisha Davis, Dan'l Derryberry, Alex'r Gillaspie, William
Alexander, Adam Derryberry, George Alexander.

The above tax lists are from transcriptions, and it is suggested that "Samuel" is a misreading of "Daniel".

Notes for John DERRYBERRY

Biography

The John Derryberry who first appears in the 1830 census in Monroe Co., MS was born about 1806 in North Carolina,
according to later census records. His birth date and place narrows the possibilities to relatively few: of the seven
"first-generation Derryberry" men, only four (or descendants thereof) were still in North Carolina at that time: John,
Andrew, George and Daniel. Of these, George and Daniel can be eliminated as possibilities: George's widow had no sons in her household in 1810, and Daniel's three sons from the 1820 census can all be accounted for. Furthermore, although John was deceased, he had three adult sons who are potential fathers, two of which can be also eliminated: his son Michael had a son John born in 1806 who is otherwise accounted for, and his son John Jr. had no sons in his household in 1810.

This leaves, among known Derryberry lines, only two possible fathers for this John of Monroe Co.: Andrew Derryberry
(1765-1839) who went to Tennessee about 1808, and John's son George William Derreberry (1772-1849) who remained in North Carolina. There is a John who is believed to have been a son of George William, who was born about 1798 and
married Nancy Vandever in 1818. George William had another son born 1802-1804 who was still in his household in 1820, name unknown, but he cannot have had two sons named John. If one assumes that the age of John of Monroe Co., MS was consistently misstated, and (since Nancy and his children remained in North Carolina) that he abandoned Nancy to move to Mississippi, then he remains a candidate. However, this seems far-fetched.

This now leaves Andrew as the best candidate for the father of John of Monroe Co. By 1820, Andrew was in Warren Co.,
TN, and he had sons who went to Mississippi and Alabama. Furthermore, John named his oldest daughter Sarah, which was Andrew's wife's name. Unfortunately, the 1820 census entries for Andrew (there are two, probably duplicate) are
somewhat ambiguous, but with some creative accounting could include John. This John of Monroe Co., MS would have been only 14 years old in 1820, and probably in his father's household. Although he was most likely Andrew's son, there is room for doubt.

This John married about 1826 to a woman also from North Carolina whose name is unknown (source: 1880 census entry for oldest daughter Sarah states both parents b. NC). Sarah was born about 1827 in Mississippi, so they either married in Mississippi or married in North Carolina and moved immediately to Mississippi. By 1840 they had four children, and
sometime between 1840 and 1850 this first wife died. In 1850, John lived still in Monroe Co., MS with Sarah Rollison,
assumed to have been his married daughter. In 1851 he remarried Mrs. Sarah Vandever, who had three children by her
first marriage. (Note the interesting similarity between Sarah Vandever and the Nancy Vandever who married George
William's son John back in North Carolina, 1818. This may be coincidence.)

Sometime between 1854 and 1860, John and his second wife moved to adjacent Itawamba Co., where John probably died sometime between 1864 and 1870. His widow Sarah is last mentioned there in the 1880 census, so she may have died between 1880 and 1900. John was a farmer, and he and his first wife had at least four children, two sons and two
daughters. Only two of these have been identified: one daughter likely as Sarah (Rollison) and one son possibly as
the John D. Derryberry incarcerated at Jackson, MS in 1860. John and his second wife had four sons, of whom three may have died relatively young.

Sources

This John is noted as a son of Andrew Derryberry, the Revolutionary War soldier, who remains the most viable candidate
for this John's father, mainly because Andrew's son Jesse also settled in Mississippi, and because John named his
eldest daughter Sarah, same as Andrew's wife.

HOLLAND, Anthony?
International Genealogical Index 4.00--
British Isles: Source Batch Number P001621
Christening: 30 March 1641?Saint Nicholas, Deptford, London, England

Anthony was possibly "transported" from Turo or Cornwall England/Wales or Virginia. Transported doesn't always mean they were a criminal. It just means that someone brought them to a certain place, usually paying their expenses that they worked off as would an indentured servant.
Anthony was brought into Maryland from Virginia by Col. William Burgess. (Annapolis Liber 24.3). When transported he must have been a mere lad.
I have always interpreted this as meaning that when Burgess brought him to Maryland with him he was quite young. Back then the English especially used to put their sons with someone of prominence to train them for the future. This is what I feel happened here. I also feel that he was a Descendant of Gabriel Hollands line, but I will probably never be able to prove this. Cousin Margie from Maryland

Will from 1639 naming an Anthony HOLLAND as the husband of Mary RICHARDS and father of a Mary HOLLAND and an Anthony HOLLAND, Jr., from Suffolk, England.?Excerpts as follows:?Archdeconry of Suffolk 1639 page 365-366?
RICHARD RICHARDS of Medham, 29 June 1639?
...To ANTHONY HOLLAND of Metfield £25 and to his wife Mary £10, and to his son ANTHONY £5 and to his daughter MARGARITE £5, and to his daughter MARY who is testator's goddaughter, £10...?
...To goddaughter MARY HOLLAND, daughter of ANTHONY HOLLAND, Senior, one feather bed, coverlet, and one posted bedstead, now in the possesion of testator's nephew JOHN RICHARDS of Fressingfield...All wearing linen and woolen to be equally divided by the executor between ANTHONY HOLLAND, THOMAS and WILLIAM RICHARDS, the sons of testator's brother ROBERT, immediately on testator's death...?Proven at Bungay 9 January 1639.

Has anyone found any connections between William Holland and Francis Holland? They were both Vestry men, and both seemed to have owned the plantation "Holland Hills" at one time.

William Holland was involved also in the transfer of a servant and her Mulatto child to Anthony Holland in 1698-9. Has anyone run across this before?

????????

from: "St James'-Old Herring Creek Parish-- A history 1663-1799"?(page 19) after a short history of Colonel William Holland there is a footnote. It reads:?
Francis Holland came up from York County, Va., to Anne Arundel County about 1656. He is listed in the early records as a Justice of the Anne Arundel County Court. He died in 1684, leaving a wife, Margaret, and two children, a daughter, Margaret and a son Francis. He left to his children a large landed estate most of which descended to his daughter, as his son Francis died in 1687 without issue.
His wife married 2nd. between 1684 and 1691 Hugh Gill (See Vol. 1 pages 51, 173).

Margaret, the daughter, married her distant kinsman William Holland. This marriage has led to confusion among historians and genealogists, some listing William as son of Francis 1, and William's wife as the daughter of Hugh Gill; clarification of this matter is found in William Holland's will (Baldwin, Vol.VI, page 234) and in Lord Baltimore's Rent Rolls, 1700-1707, found at the d. Hall of Records. Colonel William Holland's second wife was Elizabeth ???, executrix of his will.? "Holland's Hills," 190 acres, "to the westward of Herring Creek Bay," surveyed for Francis Holland 1 in 1663, was inherited by his son Francis Jr., who sold it to Richard Harrison in 1685; now known as "Holly Hill," there is on the property a very old and charming plantation house listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been conjectured that the old Herring Creek Church was on this Harrison land.

Anthony Holland came into Ann Arundel County in 1650 and his transport was claimed by William Burgess, who was one of the movers and shakers of the early times and had brought a number of Quakers up from Virginia, which is apparently where Anthony Holland and Richard Gott (1) lived before Maryland. Burgess had a number of ships and it is possible Anthony Holland may have been a worker on one of them or he may have been a younger, perhaps orphaned member of the Quaker group who came from Virginia but did not pay his way. (From Rebecca Garret Patterson)
Anthony Holland made his will on February 12, 1702, and it was proved on August 2, 1703. He died a wealthy man with a personal estate amounting to 290.5.3 (pounds), plus 996 acres of land including 580 entailed acres of "Holland's Choice", lying in Baltimore County. (Per Allnutt, from "Wills,1703, 11/362-267, Maryland State Archives, Testamentary Papers, 1719, Box 25, folder 30.

Richard Gott of Baltimore County, Richard Holland of Prince George's County and Jacob Holland petitioned the General Assembly on June 21, 1747, to have the entail docked on "Holland's Choice". Although Anthony Holland had stated in his will that the "Holland's Choice" lay in Baltimore County, the Act of Assembly cutting the entail stated it was in Anne Arundel County. Jacob Holland owned 360 Acres of it and "being through misfortunes reduced to the necessity of selling...and conveying an estate in fee simple" prayed to be free of the entail (Archives of Maryland, XLVI pp290-291 and pp 326-328)
According to Dallam's "St. James Parish" pp 131-132, Anthony Holland left in servitude one particular servant, Katherin Worley with her mulatto child, conceived out of wedlock, whose punishment of servitude was sold to Holland by the minister and Vestry of St. James' Parish on April 25, 1699.

According to the Allnutt essay, William Burgess had transported Anthony Holland into the Province in 1650. Anthony served an indentureship of four to seven years to person(s) unknown and on 14 December 1672 claimed 50 acres of land for his time of service as was the custom. In forty two years of life in Anne Arundel County, Anthony Holland had prospered well. (see Maryland Patent Liber - hereafter cited as MPL - Q/32.

Anthony Holland, a Puritan, probably became a Quaker, though not an early one, perhaps being converted following George Fox's 1672 visits to the county. He appointed his "well beloved friends" (all Quakers) Benajmin Capell, Mordecai Price, William Richardson and Samuel Galloway, "executors of his will to "doe take upon the full Execution of this My Last Will and Testament and take under their care and Management my Youngest children and their Estates" (Of the four executors, Benjamin Capell was the closest relative. Capell had wed the widow of Thomas Parsons, Isabella (?) Parsons and thus was Anthony Holland's step Father-in-Law and step grandfather of the six children by Anthony's second wife, Isabel (Parsons) Holland. Capell had no children of his own and both Richard Gott and Anthony Holland named sons after him, i.e. Capell Gott and Capell Holland. Capell duly noted his namesakes in his will (see wills, 10 May 1711, 13/333-336, MSA).

Anthony Holland, Herring Creek, Anne Arundel County, February 12, 1702 will written-August 2,1703 will proved according to Baldwin's "Maryland Calendar of Wills". Testator has 4 tracts lying in Herring Creek Swamp obtained as follows: 120 a "Goldsborough" purchased from Robt. Anne Stith Bolling

Birth: 25 Jan 1660 Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia, USA
Death: Sep 1712 (aged 52) Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Kippax Plantation Cemetery, Hopewell, Hopewell City, Virginia, USA
Memorial #: 43155013

Bio:
Born about 1660, in Charles Cittie Shire (sic), Colonial Virginia, the daughter of English immigrants, Major John and Jane (Mosby, Gregory, Parsons) Stith Sr.; a family of much notoriety and wealth in the flourishing James River tobacco plantations of seventeenth century Virginia.

In 1681, at the age of twenty one, Anne met and married the elder English gentryman, Colonel Robert Bolling, Sr. and made her home at the opulent Kippax Plantation. Over looking the south bank of the Appomattox River, this plantation house was not unlike the royal estates of England. It was in these old mansions a generation lived in lordly manner, and entertained with lavish hospitality.

It was here, at Kippax Plantation, that Anne and the Colonel raised their eight children; Jane Bolling (b. 1682), Major Robert Bolling Jr. (1682-1749), married Anne Mary Cocke; (Robert was the grandfather of Beverley Randolph, the eighth Governor of Virginia); Stith Bolling (1686-1727), married Elizabeth Hartwell; Captain Edward "Ned" Bolling (1687-1720), married Ms. Slaughter; Anne Bolling (1690-1750), married Robert Wynne; Drury Bolling (1695-1726), married Elizabeth Meriwether (NOTE: it is the daughter of Drury and Elizabeth that is [the only] Ann Meriwether); Thomas Bolling (1697-1734); Agnes Bolling (1700-1762), married Richard Kennon;.

(Not a verified or documented child of Anne and Robert Bolling .. A Mary "Molly" Bolling is said to have married Andrew Baker however, NO document to date proves she existed or this connection is accurate, nor was an Andrew Baker ever documented in this location at this time)

Her death came at an early age and in c. 1712, Anne was buried at her beloved Kippax Plantation, the final resting place of many Bolling and Rolfe descendants.

The foregoing biographical information is a compilation of historical data as found in various writings of the era and not one particular source.

Her husband, Robert died on July 17, 1709 according to the diary of Robert Bolling. However, in the same printed volume he mentions Anne (Stith) Bolling on February 24, 1711 on page 305 of the book The Secret Diary of William Byrd of Westover. Here is what he wrote, "Mr. Drury Stith called on his way over the river where he was going to see his sister Bolling who was sick." Then according to the annotation at the bottom of the page it points out that, "Anne (Stith), widow of Colonel Robert Bolling." So she at the very least lived beyond Feb. 24, 1711 and most likely beyond the scope of Byrd's diary because he no doubt would have mentioned her passing if she had died before Sept. 29, 1712, the last date of his diary between 1709-1712. Philip Goodbread Henson

Birth: 1789 North Carolina, USA
Death: 25 Apr 1855 (aged 65-66) Jackson County, Illinois, USA
Burial: Goodbread Cemetery, Gorham, Jackson County, Illinois, USA
Plot: Location unknown
Memorial #: 176622136

Bio:
*This burial could also be Phillip Calloway G. HENSON, instead of, or in addition to, the elder Phillip Goodbread Henson. **See note below:
A HENSON FAMILY HISTORY 1725-1850Author: A. L. Henson, from MissouriB4-148 - Pages 227-228This account is given to us by the Goodbread family records (Philip's cousins) and Jackson County estate records.
While visiting with Henson and Goodbread relatives (in Jackson County, Illinois), Philip G. HENSON became ill and died (abt. April 25, 1855). He was buried near Grand Tower, Illinois in the Goodbread Cemetery at Goram, Jackson, Illinois (age 65).
*Buried in an unmarked grave.∼SECOND ACCOUNT given by author - A. L. HENSON, from MissouriThis writer had heard all of his life about Philip G. HENSON leaving his invalid wife (Matilda), the Indian woman Lydia, and his home in Wayne County, Illinois, going on west to Missouri with his new found love, a woman no one seems to know.
Supporting source:History of Wayne and Clay Counties, Illinois, 1884- Pg. 266Here Philip (Henson) lived an upright life, and in 1860 he moved to Southeast Missouri, where he and wife died some time afterward.
**My Note:It is very likely that the researchers confused the probate records of Phillip Calloway G. HENSON, born 1833 - died 1855, in Jackson County, Illinois, with this Phillip Goodbread HENSON, 1789-1855. This also means that Phillip Calloway G. HENSON, is buried in this cemetery instead of, or in addition to, the elder Phillip.

D. Elizabeth4 Laird, born ca. 1804 in Augusta Co., VA,[184] married Thomas J. Noel on 12 Feb. 1833 in Hopkins Co., KY.[185] He was born ca. 1801 in KY,[186] and they settled in Hopkins Co., KY. They were living in Hopkins County in the 1840 federal census,[187] and in District 1 of Hopkins Co., KY, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer.[188] He died intestate in 1854 in Hopkins Co., and his widow, Elizabeth Noel, was granted administration of is estate. His “perishable” inventory was appraised on 4 Oct. 1854 by Richard Gregory, Thomas Yates, and W.W. Bowers.[189] No guardianships were found for his minor children in Hopkins County. Elizabeth Noel was still living in 1856 when her uncle, Samuel Laird, died, and she was living within the Madisonville post office district of Hopkins Co., KY, in the 1860 federal census.[190] She died testate in ca. 1873 in Hopkins Co., KY. Her will was dated 19 Sept. 1871, and probated on 12 Feb. 1873. She mentioned her son W. F. Noel, to whom she commented, “I have already given to W. F. Noel all that I intended that he should have,” daughters Martha V. Noel and Mary E. Noel, who each got $600 plus a bed and bedding, and daughter L. A. Whitfield, who had already received her portion, and S. B. Noel, who got $300.[191] They had children:

1. William F. Noel,[192] born ca. 1834 in Hopkins Co., KY,[193] married 1.) Henny Ann Kelly, daughter of John and Mary A. (Robertson) Kelly, of Hopkins Co.,[194] on 19 Oct. 1859 in Hopkins Co.[195] She was born in ca. 1843 in Hopkins County,[196] and they were also living within the Madisonville post office district of Hopkins Co., KY, in the 1860 federal census, where he was a farmer.[197] He was living in Hopkins Co., KY, in the 1870 federal census.[198] She probably died by 1880, and he remarried to 2.) Leila Oakley, and they were living in Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IN, in the 1880 federal census, where he was a commission merchant.[199]

2. Martha V. Noel, born ca. 1836 in Hopkins Co., KY,[200] marriage not found. She was still unmarried and living with her mother in the 1860 federal census, and she may have been the Martha Noel living in Madisonville, KY, in the 1870 federal census,[201] but she was not found in the 1880 federal census in Kentucky. She was still unmarried when her mother wrote her will in Sept. 1871.

3. Lockey A. Noel, born ca. 1838 in Hopkins Co., KY,[202] married Ezias T. Whitfield on 27 Jan. 1859 in Hopkins County.[203] They were not found in the 1860 federal census in Hopkins Co., KY. He enlisted in the Union Army as a private in Company A, 17th Calvary Regiment, on 15 Feb. 1865 in Louisville, KY, and was mustered out on 20 Sept. 1865,[204] but he was not found in the 1880 federal census. L. A. Whitfield was named in her mother’s will in Sept. 1871.

4. James C. Noel, born ca. 1841 in Hopkins Co., KY,[205] died after 1860, probably unmarried.[206] He was not found in Hopkins Co., KY, in the 1870 or 1880 federal censuses, and he was not listed in his mother’s will in 1871.

5. Samuel B. Noel,[207] born ca. 1844 in Hopkins Co., KY,[208] married Elizabeth C. Hibbs on 24 Jan. 1872 in Hopkins Co.[209] She was born ca. 1850 in KY,[210] possibly the daughter of Tolbert and Elizabeth Hibbs, of Hopkins Co., KY.[211] He was not found in Kentucky, in the 1870 federal census, but he was in his mother’s will in 1871, and they were living in Triplett, Chariton Co., MO, in the 1880 federal census, where he was a farmer.[212] They had children:
a. Ida E. Noel, born ca. 1873 in MO.[213]
b. Dicey B. Noel, born ca. 1878 in MO.[214]
c. Thomas Noel, born ca. 1880 in MO.[215]

6. Mary E. Noel, born ca. 1847 in Hopkins Co., KY,[216] marriage not found. A guardian was appointed for her after her father died,[217] and she was still unmarried when her mother wrote her will in Sept. 1871, but she was not found in the 1880 federal census in Kentucky, and may have been married by then.

Dielman Kolb Jr.

Birth: 10 May 1691
Death: 28 Dec 1756 (aged 65)

Memorial #: 77705267

The following is taken from an old book which was printed in Germany in 1581, and was brought over to this country by Dielman Kolb and was in the possession of the family until 1895, when it was sold at public sale after the death of Daniel K. Cassel, Harleysville, PA.

(Translation)
Anno, 1691, the 10th of November, I Dielman Kolb, was born into this world at one o'clock in the afternoon. Anno 1714, on St. Jacob's Day, in the 23rd year of my age, I was married
to my housewife, Elizabeth. Anno, 1717, the 21st of March, we went to Ibersheim, in the Palatinate, on the journey to Pennsylvania and the 10th August, 1717, arrived safely here
in Philadelphia.
This book belongs to me, Dielman Kolb, and I have received it from Jacob Schnebli of Manheim, in the Palatinate, Anno Dom., 1722 at this time dwelling in Solforth township, in the County of Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania.

Dielman Kolb made his will July 8, 1748, and it was proved April 30, 1757,
nearly nine years later. In this will, he named as trustees his "loving and
trusty friend Henry Funk" and John Ulrich Berger. He provided well for his
widow, Elizabeth, during her natural life; it is not know how long she
survived him. Except for 50 acres of land to be laid out of that part next
adjoining the land he had sold to his stepson, Jacob Snebley, which he left
to his grandson Dielman Ziegler, he bequeathed to his only child, Elizabeth,
wife of Andrew Ziegler, Sr., all his lands, plantations and tenements whatsoever.
To his stepson, Matthias, and granddaughter, Catherine Ziegler, he left cash
money and to the "Congregation of ye Dutch Mennonists in Salford" he bequeathed
2 pounds 1 shilling and to the Mennonists of "Perkyomin & Skepack," he left a

Dielman Kolb died December 28, 1756. David Shultze, the surveyor, entered upon
his notebook the following under date of December 28, 1756: "Der alte Dielman
Kolb zu Shippack is auch gestorben d. 28th xbr." And then on December 30:
"Went to Shippack to the burial." While there is no doubt that he was buried
in the graveyard adjoining the church in Lower Salford, which he so long and
faithfully served, there is no stone standing today to mark his last resting
place. He was in his sixty-seventh year, not quite having reached the alotted
three score and ten. "Few men, even in that day of heroic characters, can lay
claim to a nobler life, and while no monument marks his last resting place, his
name for all time will be indissolubly linked with that great historical work
of the Pennsylvania Mennonites, the most durable monument of the denomination.
