Rev David Stewart Caldwell Sr. VVeteran ?? Stewart? -- s/b Andrew

Birth: 22 Mar 1725 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA
Death: 28 Aug 1824 (aged 99) Guilford County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 40478760

Bio:
Sacred to the memory of the Rev David Caldwell DD
who was born in Lancaster Co Pa graduated at Princeton College NJ moved to NC at a period
not exactly known and organized the churches of Buffalo and Alimance (sic) over which he pious faithful and beloved sustained the office of Pastor more than sixty years and
departed this life 28th of August AD 1824 aged near one hundred years.

These slabs were erected by RC & JW & Caldwell
Maj R. Donnell

Revolutionary War Vet.

Born on March 22, 1724 to Andrew and Martha Caldwell, David Caldwell and his three younger brothers spent their childhood on the family farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After practicing carpentry until he was twenty-five, David was so compelled to enter seminary that he agreed to waive his right to the family inheritance if his brothers would assist with tuition for the College of New Jersey at Princeton. After graduating in 1761, he remained at Princeton long enough to receive a Presbyterian commission two years later. After becoming an ordained minister, Caldwell was tasked with organizing congregations in North Carolina. In 1766 he married Rachel Craighead, daughter of prominent minister Alexander Craighead and assumed leadership of Alamance and Buffalo congregations near modern Greensboro two years later.

In addition to religious duties, Caldwell operated a classical academy with up to sixty pupils annually. He also became a self-taught physician. His fees were inadequate to provide for his family of nine, even when supplemented with his ministerial stipend. Therefore, he turned to agriculture, where he characteristically found success.

Caldwell was crucial to North Carolina's war efforts in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. An excellent orator, he advanced the Patriot cause from the pulpit. So influential was Caldwell that, according to biographer Eli Carruthers, both of his congregations volunteered to the last able man. During the War of 1812, recruiters asked a frail Caldwell to boost patriotism among his flock. Caldwell delivered a stirring invocation, forcing recruiters to choose from droves of volunteers.

After a lifetime of dedicated service to country and community, Caldwell died on August 25, 1824, less than a year from his centennial. He is buried at Buffalo Church in Greensboro.

Revolutionary War Vet.

** Is this Anna Elizabeth Ferguson (especially the death date) being confused with Elizabeth Ferguson who married Peter Culp (John's brother) ??**
-------------------------------------------------------------------
According to www.davidculp.com research:
Had three sons and two males were living with him aged 26 and 16 in the 1800 census. His son George was also on the 1800 census as being married with children in a separate household. That leaves sons Peter and Henry. Peter is believed to have been born about 1770 and wasn't married until 1804. He was probably living with John in 1800 and listed as 26. That leaves this Henry as being 16 in 1800, making his birth year 1784 and too young to be Henry Culp Sr. who had children born in the 1790's. This information is important later because there are:

Too Many Henrys!

Birth: 1750 North Carolina, USA ?? NC?
Death: 17 Apr 1809 (aged 58–59) Cabarrus County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 194203683
Bio:
John Culp was the Son of Hans Casper Culp and Anna Felicitas. John was married twice. The name of name of his first wife is unknown. His second wife was Anna Elizabeth. In about 1770 John Culp came to the German section of Mecklenburg County, N.C., which later in 1792 became Cabarrus County, N.C. This German Settlement was around Saint Johns Lutheran Church that is nearest to Mount Pleasant, N.C., but in present day has as the location address that of Concord, N.C. During the Revolutionary years the German community surrounding Saint Johns Lutheran Church was very much in favor of the Cause of Liberty, and John Culp is recorded as such as his name is listed as J. Culp in the North Carolina Army Account Books which is located in the North Carolina State Archives. [NOTE: The records on the American Revolution were discovered by John E. F. Misenheimer, II, Historian and Genealogist in the N.C. State Archives].

John Culp's children were: (1) George Culp, born ca. 1772, married Barbara Guthmann/Goodman, born 1777; (2) Hannah Culp; (3) Peter Culp, born 1776; (4) Henry Cup, born 1780; (5) Elizabeth Culp; (6) John Culp; (7) Unknown daughter, born ca, 1770/1775 (This daughter is not mentioned in John Culp's will when it was probated. John Culp died in 1809. The unknown daughter was the 1st wife of John Tobias Goodman. She died between 1793 to 1806, and sometime after the birth of their son, John Goodman, in 1793.)

When John Culp died in 1809, his living children by his first wife, George and Hannah, sued Peter, Henry, Elizabeth and John, children of the 2nd wife, to force them to probate John Culp's Last Will.

George Culp received a grant for 33 acres in Cabarrus County, N.C. on the waters of Buffalo Creek next to Christian Goodman's line on March 1, 1792.

John Goodman, (1793 - 1867), who was the son of Miss (Given Name Unknown) Culp and John Tobias Goodman, married Susanna Summers (1801 - 1876), the daughter of Zachariah Summers and Sarah Dawson. They lived in the Amity Hill section of Iredell County, N.C. on Withrow's Creek. Their son James A. Goodman married Lunda Margaret Goodman, a distant cousin. She was the daughter of Michael Goodman and Sarah Poutz. James and Lunda's son, James William Goodman. married Etta Corinna Little of Stanfield, Stanly County, N.C. Etta was the daughter of Daniel Ransom Little and Rebecca Pur.

In the 1500's, the Kolb's/Culp's were Anabaptists and fled Switzerland to avoid persecution for their religion. They went first to Germany, then to Holland, and then to America. In Germany, the name was Kolb. The first new generation in America Americanized the name to Culp.

Hans Casper Culp, came to America with his three brothers and Mr. Alexander Mack, a founder of the German Baptists denomination, and a group of his followers. They arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the ship "Allen" in 1729.

Hans Casper Culp received a warrent for land on the Great Swamo in Bucks County, Pa., in 1735. He sold this land to Ulrich Spinner in 1739. Hans Casper Culp received warrents for land in 1739 and in 1740 in "Tohickon" in Bucks County.

Hans Casper Culp was in Anson County, N.C. (that part which becane became Chester County, S.C.) where his Uncle Jonathan was living as early as 1753. In 1753, he received a warrent for 300 acres on the west side of the Catawba River adjoining his own line. In 1754, he received a grant for 987 acres of land. Records indicate that a number of "Tunkers" (German Baptist Brethern) settled in the neighborhood of Beaver Creek in 1748. The Beaver Creek Church was near Hans Casper Culp's plantaion.

Hans Casper Culp was born 1701 in Mannheim, Baden, Germany. His father was Peter Kolb, born 1671 in Wolfsheim, Pfalz, Germany.

Hans Casper Culp's wife was Anna Falicitas. Their children were: 1) Henry Culp; 2) Augustian Culp; 3) John Culp, born 1750; 4) Mary Culp; 5) Barbara Culp; 6) Margaret Culp; 7) Cathren Culp; 8) Benjamin Culp, born 1741 in Chester County, S.C.; and 9) Peter Culp.

Message Board Post:

I'm looking for information on the John Mills and Mariam Wadlington family who came from Rutherford Co, NC to Christian Co, KY by the 1803 tax list.
Mariam was a d/o of Thomas Wadlington, who also came from Rutherford Co, NC to Christian Co, KY by the early 1800s.
John Mills was in the 1810 Christian Co, KY census and then in the 1820 Trigg Co, KY census.
I believe he had sons:
Ambrose, who married Susan Humphries.
John Jr., who married Elizabeth Malone. ********
Jesse.
and others.
I would like to contact any living descendants but would appreciate any help.
Thanks, Don

Elizabeth Graves (35) was born 27 Aug. 1820 in Franklin Co., TN, died 18 Oct. 1870, and was buried in Cobb/Love Cem., near Medon, TN, in Madison Co. She married James Harrison, son of John Harrison. He was born about 1818 in NC.

James Harrison was granted letters of administration for the estate of his deceased father, John Harrison, in the March term, 1846, of Madison Co., TN Court, as well as guardianship of minors of John Harrison, viz., Andrew J., Robert T., Sarah J., Francis M., Charles L., and Thomas J. L./C. Harrison, in the August term, 1847, of the County Court.

According to the Federal Census records of 1850 and 1860 of Madison Co., TN, Civil District 2, with the post office at Medon, TN, James Harrison, a wagon/carriage maker, and Elizabeth, his wife, had children: John T., William F. (or H.?), Sarah E., James A., Agnes M., and Margaret. In 1870 the Madison Co., TN, census of the 2nd Dist., post office Medon, TN, showed James Harrison, a miller, with wife E., and children named only by initials of A., a 22 yr. old male, A., an 18 yr. old male, M., 23 yr. old male, J., 20 yr. old female, and F., 24 yr. old male. All were born in TN.

James Harrison may have married a second time after Elizabeth's death, since the 1880 census for Gibson Co., TN, Civil Dist. 24, lists a James Harrison, miller, at the right age, b. NC, whose wife, Minerva, is 48, born in TN. In this household no. 31, p. 374-B of the census, are also Margaret Griffey, dau., age 28, b. TN, father b. in NC, and mother in TN. Others listed are Charles Griffey, 6, grandson, b. TN; Johnnie Griffy, 1, granddau., b. TN; and Margaret Reed, 62, sister-in-law, b. TN.

This seems to indicate that James secondly married Minerva ------, who was born about 1832 in TN, and he moved to Gibson Co., TN. Living next door in 1880 was a James Harrison, age 36, miller, b. TN (whose father was b. NC, and mother b. TN), his wife Fannie, and their 3 children Alice, age 10, Phillip, age 5, and Duncan, age 4. (R-11)

6. BENJAMIN2 CULP (HANS CASPER1 KOLB) was born 15 May 1741 in PA, and died 29 Oct 1819 in Chester Co., SC4. He married (1) DOROTHEA ABENDSCHON 1769, daughter of CHRISTIANUS ABENDSCHON and ANNA BERINGER. She was born Abt. 1750 in Berks Co., PA, and died 1786 in Chester Co., SC4. He married (2) MARY ANN CLINE 4 Sep 1787, daughter of HANS KLEIN and ANNA SCHUFFERT. She was born 24 Sep 1761 in Mecklenburg Co., NC, and died 6 Jul 1837 in Chester Co., SC4.

Notes for BENJAMIN CULP:
Benjamin settled in the Tinkers Creek section of eastern Chester Co., SC. His brother Augustine went on up the river in York County. His sister Barbara is remembered as being scalped by the indians; she survived and lived to rear a family. Some of the children of Benjamin and his second wife, Mary Cline, retained the German version of his name -- KOLB.

Benjamin saw service in the Revolutionary War. From records in the Historical Commission Office of South Carolina is found: "State of South Carolina debtor to Bangman Culp for sarvis dun under Captain George Nealey 11 days shoresman's duty 28 Apr 1781 11. To bees apresd by George Nealy and Andrew Lookerd to the value South Carolina Lbs. 26, the hol account amount Lbs. 37. Camdon District."

Benjamin in 1790 Chester Co. census. In 1810 Chester Co. census (pp. 256, 264, 265, 270, 274):

Benjamin Culp John Culp
Henry Culp John Culp, Jr.
John Culp

Lived In Charleston, SC. His will probated 2 Nov 1819. Both are buried in Burnt Meeting House (Old Richardson) Cem., Chester Co., SC. Benjamin sold land to the Presbyterian Church (Book N, pg. 334). Ben is buried between his 2 wives. Tombstone (which from its appearance seems to have been erected long after the deaths of Benj. and his wives) incorrectly states that Dorothea was dau. of Samuel Heinrich. She was his granddau. The will of her father, Christian Abendschon, names as his heirs ... "children of Darity [Dorothea] Culp." His will was made in 1793 after his daughter's death so he left her share of his estate to her children. Have photos of both gravestones.

Some information on desc. of Benjamin Culp was taken from the publication: Captain Bill, Book Three by Robert J. Stevens, A Genealogy of the Catawba River Valley of South Carolina Chester-York-Lancaster Counties - Edwards, Culp, McFadden (Darlington, SC: By the author, 1990). This book, however, contains errors on the lineage of Dorothea Abendschon. The Abendschon family came to this country from Wurttemberg in 1749 and never lived in Scotland. Dorothea was not born in Scotland.

Davis n Davis Various info unconfirmed

1. It appears that the Earle family located around Spartenburg and the Pacolet river of the NC/SC area and the Davis Family who comes to Christian/ Hopkins co ky have family relations. It is said that William Davis married Misseniah Earle daughter of John Earle son of Judge Bayless Earle and Mary Prince.William Davis said son of Richard Davis also called Old Dick Davis who was son of Richard Davis also called Old Dick Davis who is said son of Thomas Davis and Sarah Fielding. The first Old Dick Davis born abt 1725 would be said brother of James/John James Conway Davis. My line Richard Davis b abt 1725 married Sabina Harrison and thier son Richard Davis born abt 1745/46 married Nancy Ann Chiles
IAW Sanderson link http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sbeddes&id=I17347quoteWas included in his father's will writeen in 1812. William was serving in the Army, and his wife Missaniah and dau Huldah Ann were living with Richard and Ann Davis. The record of marriage of William Davis and Missaniah Earle in 1810
is listed in Muhlenberg Co., KY, Marriage Book 1-15. William and M were buried in the Davis-Bishop Cemetery, near Cross-Church. His inscription
is: "Born 9 June 1789 and died 4 Feb 1848. Missaniah's is: Age 44, died 25
March 1840. William M. had a second marriage 9 Dec 1842, to Elizabeth
Woodruff, nee Jones, the widow of David Woodruff. In Dec. 1848 (DB 14-44) we
find her deeding land to two of Williams' sons, Dixon G. Davis and Thomas C.

John “Jack Junior” Davis

Birth: 16 Jul 1796
Death: 14 Aug 1860 (aged 64) Hopkins County, Kentucky, USA
Burial: Davis and Ligon CemeteryHopkins County, Kentucky, USA
Memorial #: 104835655
Bio:
Jack "Junior" Davis married Sarah Metcalf in 1826, when he was 30 & she was 17. She sued him for divorce in the 1850's, claiming cruelty for several years. The outcome is undocumented so far, but in any case Sarah died in 1857. Jack married again in 1859 Sarah E. Hardwick, (1828-1914). Both of Jack's wives were many years younger than he was; his daughters also married, as teenagers, men at least 10 years older than themselves.

Jack was called "Junior" and his uncle John Davis was "Senior." Jack's parentage is obscure, but the majority votes for his parents being Harrison Davis and Patsy Crockett, who moved the family from Virginia.

Jack was reputed to be a slave trader. In the 1860 census he owned 24 slaves, more than any of his neighbors. He left an estate of over $70,000, a huge sum for the time and place. Descendents believed there is no way he could have become so wealthy unless he was a merchant in the slave market.
