Biography of William M. Alexander, Crawford County, Arkansas
Published in The History of Crawford County, Arkansas,
Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889

William M. Alexander, farmer and stock raiser, was born in Williamson County, Tenn., in 1828, his parents being Alfred and Rebecca (Kerby) Alexander, natives of the same county, where they lived until 1837. They then started for Oregon, but stopping in Stoddard County, Mo., died there in 1881 and 1883, aged seventy-six and seventy-one, respectively.
In religion they were Methodists.
The grandfather, Thomas Alexander, was born in Buncombe County, N. C., was an early settler of Tennessee, a soldier in the Revolution, and died in Williamson County, aged one hundred and five, on the farm on which our subject's father was born. His father came to America from Ireland and died in Tennessee, aged one hundred and ten, on the farm upon which our subject's father was born.
William M. is the eldest of a family himself and six sisters, and was reared in Stoddard Couonty, Mo., during the pioneer days, receiving but a very limited schooling. In 1856 he married Sarah M., daughter of John Edwards and a native of Kentucky. Mr. Edwards was born in England. In 1872 Mr. Alexander moved from Stoddard County to his present farm in Vine Prairie Township. He now owns eighty acres of well-improved land, all of which he has cleared. Having learned the cooper's and blacksmith's trades, he works at them in connection with his farming. He is always willing to aid any enterprise for the advancement of the county, and is known as one of its upright and well-to-do citizens. He cast his first presidential vote for Pierce, and with the exception of 1864, when he voted for Lincoln, has supported every Democratic candidate since. He is a member of the Producer's Trade Union and Knights of the Horse. Himself and wife belong to the Methodist Church.

Thomas B and Levicy Evans Garrett married in Williamson Co, TN in 1823 and migrated to East Texas ca 1832, following his older brother Milton who settled around San Augustine. Thomas and Levicy moved on to Douglass, Nacogdoches Co, TX where they lived till Thomas' death. They seem to have family and/or land connections in Hopkins, Delta, Leon and Smith Counties. Levicy, in her later years, was involved in court proceedings in Smith Co, TX related to child custody.

Thomas B. Young

Birth: 1720
Death: 1791 (aged 70–71)
Burial: Old Union CemeteryUnion County, South Carolina, USA
Memorial #: 13029985
Bio:
Thomas Young, Esquire, is sometimes mistaken for his son, Major Thomas Young, in some genealogies. Thomas Young senior played no role in the Revolutionary War, other than supplying provisions to the militia and Continental forces; he describes himself in his own will, dated 1778, as "...sick in body...". He does appear on the Anson County militia list, in 1759, serving, however, as a private, under Captain Edward Musgrove (Anson County is part of North Carolina, but at the time extended into what today is much of northwestern South Carolina).
******************
Thomas B. Young, Esquire, was born about 1720 in Pennsylvania. He was raised an Anglican, becoming an Episcopalian when that church was established about 1787 (his son Major Thomas Young identifies him as an Episcopalian in his memoirs). Some histories claim that his was descended from the Scottish Lamont clan, and that his family came to America via Scotland, but the error that story was based on was discovered, and the story disproved, decades ago.

Thomas' Anglican religion (and the Tory sympathies of his brother William's family during the Revolution - see below) confirms that he was English, not Scotch-Irish (Presbyterian) as were many of his neighbors, nor Irish (Catholic). Based on a family history related by Thomas's son William Young to his (William's) grandson the Rev Capt William Young, and then written down by the Rev Capt William Young's son William, the family had to flee England "to avoid Cromwell's axe" (which also confirms that the family were originally Anglican, and Royalist). Because of their Royalist/Anglican sympathies, they certainly would have faced persecution under the Parliamentary government of Oliver Cromwell, including perhaps being dispossessed of hereditary lands, if not worse. During the period following the execution of King Charles I, from 1650 to about 1670, a large migration of dispossessed Anglicans to Virginia occurred, mostly from strongly Royalist Southwestern England. Virginia was friendly to Royalists, in contrast to the colonies of New England which were strongly Puritan. Pennsylvania, which was later established as a haven for Puritans, didn't exist at the time (it was established in 1681).

According to the history, three brothers, William, George and Thomas, joined this migration to Virginia. The brothers may have come over as children with their parents, but this isn't recorded in the history. The family must have come from a background of some standing, wealth, and education, evidenced later by Thomas Young appearing in the records as Thomas Young "Esq" or "Gent," and his brother William rising to the rank of Colonel with a Loyalist (Tory) regiment. The family may have originally landed, and established an estate, in Barbados, as many emigres found there way to America via a stay in Barbados, and Thomas' brother William owned an estate there.

Brother George remained in Virginia, Thomas went to North Carolina, while William would later emigrate from Virginia to Pennsylvania. Thomas Young, Esq, was either the son, or perhaps more likely a grandson, of this William Young. Thomas had known brothers William, Christopher, and Jesse, all born in Pennsylvania; there were probably other siblings.

Thomas's first known son, William, was born to him and his (first) unknown wife in 1744, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (William noted in his application for his soldier's pension that he was born in York County, Pennsylvania, but York was not formed (from Lancaster County) until 4 years after William was born). There are some clues that Thomas's first wife may have been a Gray or Kilgore. They also had at least one daughter, Jane, who is believed to have married a Kilgore. Nothing more is known of this Jane. Thomas and his 2nd wife, Catharine Brandon, would also have a daughter they would name Jane, born 1759, so possibly this first Jane had died by then.

Sometime about 1754 Thomas emigrated from Pennsylvania to what then was the Royal Colony of South Carolina. He settled in 96 District, in the area that would later become Laurens County. He may already have been married to his 2nd wife Catharine Brandon; the Brandon family emigrated from Pennsylvania to the 96 district at about the same time, along with many other allied families: Kennedys, McJunkins, Hughes, Steens, and others. Thomas and Catherine's first son, George Young Sr., was born in South Carolina in 1755. In 1764 Thomas moved to the part of 96 which became Union County in 1798 (named after the first Church that was erected there - named "Union Church" because at least 3 faiths worshipped there: Presbyterian, Anglican [later Episcopalean], and Quaker).

There is also another story that appears in some histories that the Young family originally settled in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania, leaving for South Carolina after a massacre of the settlers there by Indians. That story, however, is easily disproved - the famous Wyoming massacre occurred in 1778, when the Revolution was underway, and more than 20 years after the Youngs had emigrated to South Carolina from Pennsylvania.

Thomas served as a private in the militia in South Carolina; he appears on the Anson County militia list, in 1759, serving as a private under Captain Edward Musgrove (Anson County is part of North Carolina, but at the time extended into what today is much of northwestern South Carolina). Also listed are Christopher, John, James and William Brandon along with Thomas Young. He did not serve during the Revolutionary War (he describes himself in his own will, dated 19 May 1777, as "...sick in body..."). He was, however, a regular supplier of provisions to both the militia and the Continental army during the war. Many records of such transactions exist, and it is in these records that we find references to him as "Thomas Young Esq" and "Thomas Young Gent", as well as the reference to his middle initial "B".

There are some trees that show Thomas B Young, Esq., as "Major" Thomas Young, but Major Thomas Young was actually Thomas B. Young's son, well-known Revolutionary War patriot, born 1764; Major Young served gallantly during the war, but did not become a Major until after the Revolution, when he was Major, and then Colonel, of the local militia.

Thomas B. Young's brother William was Colonel William Young of the Loyalist Tory South Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War. Several of Colonel William's sons also fought for the British; one, Nathaniel, was killed, and another, William Jr., with has company of Tories, faced off against his cousin Major Thomas Young (the son of Thomas B. Young, Esq. mentioned above), in a confrontation across a creek - Young was with his company of patriot militia - that ended when one of Major Young's companions put a bullet into the nose of William's horse. Major Young described the incident in his memoirs.

Thomas's wife, Catherine Brandon, was the daughter of George Brandon, and sister of Colonel Thomas Brandon who participated in many well documented battles in the Carolinas against the British in the early 1780's. Catherine died in Union County after 6 January 1815, when she put her "X" on the estate papers of her husband in Union County. Thomas also died in (then) Union District. His will, written 19 May 1777 and recorded 3 February 1791 in Union District, is the oldest will on file in the county; Thomas must have died early in 1791. Witnesses to the will were Thomas Brandon, John Brandon, and William Kennedy.

Thomas and his brother-in-law Colonel Thomas Brandon were among the first settlers of the Union County area of South Carolina; Thomas and his family lived about four miles south of the Union courthouse. He was granted 550 acres on Buffalo Creek in January 1785, which he later sold to Colonel Brandon. Thomas also owned land along Fairforest Creek and at the forks of the Broad and Saluda Rivers.
******************
A petition to Gov. Arthur Dobbs exists from the inhabitants "on ye frunteers of Anson County" asking for a scout to be appointed and a fort built between the Enoree River and the headwaters of Thickety Creek. It lists George, Christopher and James Brandon, as well as a Wm. Kenedy and Thos. Young. Among the men on the 1759 militia list of Capt. Edward Musgrove, we find a Christopher, John, James and William Brandon along with Thomas Young. Thomas "McClary" is listed as a deserter.

The children of Humphrey N., or Newton H., and his wife Mary, or Polly, Forster were: William Julius, James M., Harriett Emmaline. "Hattie", and Henry Newton. Although he is listed in the birth and marriage entries of his parents' bible as Humphrey N., he was known as Newton H. during most of his adult life and was called Newton H. in his father's will. (11.4) Newton H. died in 1847, and Polly appears to have died in late 1852 or early 1853 because, in April 1853, the minor children, James M., Harriett E., and Henry N. were were assigned guardians, James Baxter, William D. Alexander, and William Julius Alexander, respectively. Of these offspring, I've been successful in tracing only William Julius and Henry Newton.(11.5)

Note 11.4:
Comparing the page from James's and Ann's bible and this excerpt from James's will shows that Humphrey N. and Newton H. were the same person.
Excerpt from will of James Alexander, Buncombe Co., NC, written 18 February 1844: "At the death of my wife I allow all my land to be sold and my just debts paid and I give out of said sale to my son Newton H. $600 and the balance of the land money to be equally divided between John C. and Robert S. I also give my books to my son John C. and William D. and Newton H. to be equally divided among them and all the stock on hand at my wife death I give to my son George C."

- Both Sally and Micajah are listed in Bartlett Henson's probate records.

- Evidently died before 5/2/1848
- Micajah is listed in 1850 census with second wife Dorcas Smith - married 5/2/1848 in McDowell Co, NC.
- listed as age 49? born 1801? -- Sally 20 years older? -- possibly this is their son?
- Micajah died 8/1856 per estate papers in McDowell Co, NC filed by his widow Dorcas.

Sandra,
In your research, have you come across a Micajah Sisk, born around 1790-1800? I believe he was brother to Martin, but not really sure. I've found listings of Martin's family, but Micajah isn't listed. I've researched Elijah, John, Robert, and others, but Micajah isn't listed with any family.
Micajh is listed in McDowell County census in 1850 with his second wife, Dorcus. His first wife was Sally Henson, with whom he had at least two sons; Hosea and Bartlett.

He died before 1860. In that census his wife Dorcus is listed as head of household. There is a Martin Sisk living with her and her minor children by Micajah. That's why I assume Martin is his brother, or maybe an uncle. I believe Martin is too young to be his father.

Thanks for any help,
Frann

ROBERT BICKERS (G4/N2)
4TH GENERATION
Virginia-Kentucky-Tennessee ca1827-1859
m. Isabella Thompson 1820-1904
Son of Benjamin Carty Bickers (G3/N2) & Joanna Martin VA-KY-TN ca1782-1847
Grandson of Nicholas Bickers (G2/R1) & Jane Carty VA 1744-1836
Great-grandson of Robert Bickers (G1) & Elizabeth VA ca1709-1808
Draft - As of 06 June 2003

Robert Bickers (G4/N2) was born about 1827 in Orange County, Virginia, and was murdered at his lumber operation in July1859 in Phillips County, Arkansas, by a man who had been fired the previous day. The Last Will & Testament of Robert Bickers [1*], 1859, is indexed at Rec G, p.186, Phillips Co, AR
Robert Bickers married Isabella Thompson [2*], Madison Co, TN. Issued 01 Nov1847 by Thomas W. Gamewell, Clerk. Witness: Robert and William Bickers. Solemnized 18 Nov 1847. JP: H. Barrier, witnessed by Wm. Bickers. Robert married Isabella Thompson about the same time that an Administrator was being named for Benjamin Carty Bickers' estate. Isabella Thompson was born on 03 September 1820 [1830 - JHM] and died on 06 December 1904. She was 69 years of age at the time of the 1900 Census. She was buried in the Holmes Cemetery in Ripley, Lauderdale County, Tennessee.
According to the biography written by his nephew, James Madison Bickers (G5/N2):
The said Benjamin Bickers raised a family of 8 boys and 3 girls. His sons' names were Robert, Lewis Alexander, Benjamin [R], William [H], Henry [C], [Joel] Anderson, Horace [E], and Jefferson [R] Bickers. Robert Bickers was killed before the war in Phillips County, Arkansas, while overseeing nigros*. He married Iby Thompson, a sister to my mother. They had 3 children, 2 boys and a girl. Their names were Benjamin Allen, William Henry, and Martha Bickers, all dead except William Henry Bickers, who lives at Ripley, Tennessee. Horace Bickers was a preacher and he died, I think, in Arkansas. Jefferson Bickers was killed in the war at Corinth, Mississippi. "...my father, Lewis Alexander Bickers, married Susan Thompson, a daughter of Allen Thompson, a Baptist preacher who lived at that time 2½ miles West of Medon Station now on the railroad...It was when Grant was making the second attack on Vicksburg...".
Benjamin Carty Bickers moved his family to Kentucky and visited years with his brother, Joel Bickers, in Mercer County, Kentucky. Some of the Thompson family may [have - JHM] moved to Tennessee at the same time that Benjamin's family went to Tennessee, because one of Joel's sons also married an Isabella Thompson and named a daughter ‘Susan'. Many families were so close to one another that they named children alike, thus identifying themselves with one another. The Thompsons and the Bickers were on neighboring property in Madison County, Tennessee.
The 1850 Census for Madison County, Tennessee, enumerates Robert Bickers, 22, born in Virginia, a farmer, his wife, Isabella Bickers, age 20, born in Kentucky, and their 1-month old daughter, Mary.
According to the '1860 Mortality Schedule, AR; 1974', Robert Biggers, 35, married, b.VA, died July 1859, murdered sudden, Phillips Co, AR.; and his Estate is listed [3*]: Robert Bickers, 1859, Rec G, p.186, Phillips Co, AR.
Further from the biography compiled by James Madison Bickers (G5/N2):
When we arrived at our grandfather Thompson's we found there 3 other orphan children at grandfather's house, they were the sons and daughter of Uncle Robert Bickers who was killed by a nigre in Arkansas. This increased my grandfather Thompson to 6 orphan children, which made a great burden on my grandfather and grandmother for they was both old and feeble and my grandfather was nearly blind and he had a blind daughter, Aunt Ally [Alice] Thompson, who was then 50 years old and had been blind all her life, but Aunt Ally did not live but a few months after we got there. Aunt Ally was a good woman and as I write this I can see in my mind tonight that good blind aunt of mine going around that old place and doing things that looks to me now unreasonable for a blind person to do. My grandfather managed to take care of us 6 orphan children very well considering the war times. Both northern and southern armys were at that time making raids in West Tennessee and it was hard on anyone to make anything and keep it.
At the 1850 Census for Madison County, Isabella's father, Allen Thompson, was a Baptist Minister, age 53; her mother, Sarah, was 57, their children:
Ally (Alice) Thompson, white female, 24, b.KY, blind, dau
Lee Thompson (1860 own family), white male, 18, b.TN, farmer, son
Cynthia Thompson, white female, 14, b.TN, son
Allen M. Thompson, white male, 12, b.TN, son
Mary W. Thompson, white female, 10, b.TN, son
This was the family to which Isabella, now a widow, returned when her husband, Robert, died in 1859. Allen Thompson was 64, a farmer, b.SC; Sarah was 62, SC; and Alice, their daughter, 32, b.TN, and blind, and now Isabella with the orphans of Robert:
1860 TN Census of Madison County:
Isabella Bickers, white female, Widow, 27, b.KY
Benjamin Allen Bickers, white male, 7, b.TN, grandson
Martha Bickers, white female, 5, b.TN, granddaughter
William [H] Bickers, white male, 2, b.AR, grandson
This was also the family unit which James Madison Bickers joined when his father, Lewis Alexander (brother of Robert Bickers) went to war. His mother, Susan Thompson Bickers, who had died, was the sister of Isabella. From his history: ...When we arrived at our grandfather Thompson's we found there 3 other orphan children at grandfather's house, they were the sons and daughter of Uncle Robert Bickers who was killed by a nigre in Arkansas. This increased my grandfather Thompson to 6 orphan children, which made a great burden on my grandfather and grandmother for they was both old and feeble and my grandfather was nearly blind and he had a blind daughter, Aunt Ally Thompson, who was then 50 years old and had been blind all her life, but Aunt Ally did not live but a few months after we got there. I was 14 years old then...In the year 1870, I and cousin William Thompson moved to Obion County, Tennessee...
Research shows that Lewis Alexander Bickers, now home from the war, married Lucinda Leathers in Obion County. This is not mentioned in the history written by his son, James Madison Bickers. Can it then be assumed that when he and his cousin, William Thompson moved to Obion County, that he was joining his father?
Letter from H.A. Bickers in Mercer, Tennessee, to Joseph Edward Bickers in Westfield, New Jersey, dated 14 May 1940: Dear Sir: My father, William Henry Bickers, the son of Robert Bickers, was a descendant of the Virginia Bickers. I do not know how close up...I was reared at Ripley, TN. My father died 1937. My brothers, Robert T., Ben A., Jesse H., and Oscar live at Ripley, TN. I am married, have a daughter in college, two sons 18 and 15. I am college and seminary trained and ordained Baptist preacher. Yours, H.A. Bickers"
The children of Robert Bickers (G4/N2) & Isabella Thompson:
Mary Bickers (G5/N2) b.TN 1850
Benjamin Allen Bickers (G5/N2) b.TN, b.ca1852
Martha Bickers (G5/N2) b.TN b.ca1854
William Henry Bickers (G5/N2) b.AR 1859-1936 m. Cora Thompson

1840, p. 76: 20002-00001 (note: the female is probably Martha Hicks; she was actually younger than indicated and should have been enumerated in the age 15-20 category - such census errors are not unknown; no proof has ever been provided that Calvin had a previous marriage, and other sources name Martha as the mother of Calvin's oldest sons. The two boys aged 0-5 are Calvin's sons Elijah and Aaron. The identity of the other male 20-30 is unknown; note that if Calvin J. Butler is the male age 15-20 enumerated with Absolem Butler in 1830, then the other male 20-30 enumerated here could be the younger male 10-15 enumerated with Absolem in 1830 (it is apparently not Wiley W. Biography of Charles Andrew Derryberry (Tennessee and Tennesseans vol. 5):
"... we note Charles Andrew Derryberry, who is personally responsible for the present School of Business in Jackson,
the first institution of its kind ever organized in this place....

"In Uptonville, Madison county, Tennessee, Charles A. Derryberry was born on May 9, 1870. His parents were William
Jordan Derryberry and Narcissa Weathers Derryberry. On the parental farm which was his birthplace and his father's
lifetime residence, Charles Derryberry spent his juvenile days, attending the rural schools of his vicinity. From
these he passed to the high schools of Hayward county. On completing this period of his education, he entered
professional life, deferring special and more advanced courses until a later time. The schools of Madison county were
the first field for Mr. Derryberry's activities as a teacher. After his service in that region, he followed the same
line of work in Henry county. Having thus served his own state for a goodly term of years, he then accepted positions
in the high schools of Graves county, Kentucky. Altogether his period of public school teaching continued until 1901.

"In the year mentioned Mr. Derryberry became a student in the Southwestern Baptist University in Jackson, where he
carried full courses for two years. At the end of that time he was tendered, in recognition of his proficiency and his
pedagogical acumen, the position of principal of the Stenographic Department in this same institution. In 1905 the
university authorities deemed it best to confine the college curricula to classical, literary and scientific lines,
leaving the commercial training to independent outside enterprises. This gave Professor Derryberry an excellent
opportunity to further define his own work along individual lines. He therefore established the Jackson School of
Business in that same year of 1905. This was the first school of business ever established in the city of Jackson. It
has flourished in gratifying degree and stifi continues its important work, with Mr. Derryberry as its head.

"Professor Derryberry has become identified with many of the prominent movements of Jackson. He has numerous fraternal
associations, including the following: The Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge 45; the Knights of Pythias, Lancelot Lodge
13, of which he is a past chancellor; and the Woodmen of the World, in Lodge 469. He is an intelligent political
thinker, adhering 'to the main doctrines of the Democratic party. The religious connections of the Derryberry family
are with the Baptist church. The home of Charles Andrew Derryberry was established in 1892, on which date he was united
in marriage to Miss Pearl Birge Graves, of Grundy Center, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Derryberry are the parents of two
children, named Voris Graves and Flo S. Derryberry. The family is one of both intellectual and social importance in
Jackson."

Death record, Shelby Co., TN, no. 54-25570. Charles A. Derryberry, age 83, res. 1428 Monroe, Memphis, TN. Retired
teacher at Union University. Born 9 May 1871 Tennessee, parents unknown. Died 1 Nov 1954 at Shelby County Hospital,
rural Shelby Co., of coronary thrombosis. Informant Mrs. J. L. Wright. Removed 1 Nov 1954 to Spain Funeral Home at

Notes for Jacob DERRYBERRY

Biography

Jacob Derryberry was one of seven "first-generation" Derryberry men who appear in the records of Burke Co., NC prior to
1800. Although the best the census records can tell us is that he was born before 1755, we know that by 1790 he had
six children, and that his oldest known son was born about 1775 in Burke Co., NC. We may estimate therefore that Jacob was probably born in the late 1740's or early 1750's, and probably in New Jersey. Furthermore, he last appears on an 1812 tax list, and his widow appears in the 1820 census, suggesting he died between 1812-1820, probably in Warren Co., TN where he lived at the time.

A 1778 land entry for David Conors in the Silver Creek area of Burke Co., NC notes that the land in question adjoined
that of Michael Derryberry and included improvements by Jacob Derryberry. "In 1778 an improvement was defined by the
legislature as 'erected a House thereon, or cleared, enclosed and cultivated a part thereof'. This is significant to
the researcher in that a 1778 citation of an improvement predates the maker's presence by a minimal seven years, or to
1771." [Source: "One 'Serendipitous Moment'", by Betsy Dodd Pittman, in "Burke County Genealogical Journal", May
2013.] We know therefore that Jacob was resident in the Silver Creek area circa 1771.

By 1775, however, he had moved north to an area along the Catawba River. Records of the Committee for the County of
Rowan meeting in Salisbury, 20 Sep 1775, states: "Josiah Black and John Hardin contending for the captain's commission of a vacancy on the Catawba River--" It was established that an election be held on 5 Oct, and "the bounds of the district shall be as follows, viz: To start upon the Catawba River, half a mile above Joseph Dobson's, running thence to John Kennedy's, on Silver Creek, thence up said creek to the Tryon line, thence down said line opposite to Whitnor's bottom on Jacobs River, thence to Silver Creek Road, thence to Jacob Terriberry's, upon the main Catawba River, thence up said river to the beginning." [Source: "History of North Carolina" from "North Carolina Historical Sketches, 1584-1851," p. 368.] We therefore know that Jacob in 1775 lived where Silver Creek Road met the Catawba River.

Jacob's oldest known son, Henry, was according to his death record born about 1775 in Burke Co., NC, to parents Jacob and "Cresula." His mother corresponds to the widow Christiana who appears in later records, and who numerous secondary sources assign the maiden name Barnhart. Although there is no documentary proof of this, it is likely to be correct given Jacob's proximity to a John Barnhart, as discussed below. We therefore estimate that Jacob Derryberry and Christiana Barnhart were married about 1773 in Burke Co.

By 1790 or earlier, Jacob had moved again, this time east to Gunpowder Creek, near Granite Falls in modern-day Caldwell Co. In the 1790 census, Jacob and his probable brother Michael Derryberry can be found near each other in the 2nd Company of Burke Co. This company was in modern-day eastern Burke / southeastern Caldwell Co. Jacob appears on several land, tax and court records from this same general area from 1790 to 1799. Although Jacob and Michael lived
near each other there for several years, in 1796 Michael moved to Virginia and then Kentucky, while Jacob remained for
several years longer in Burke Co. Jacob last appears there on the 1800 census, at a time when his probable brothers
Adam and Michael had moved west.

Jacob himself probably left North Carolina shortly after the 1800 census, since he does not appear on the Granite
Falls-area tax lists for 1802-1809. His whereabouts for most of that time are unknown. Although his son Michael lived
for a time with his uncle Michael Sr. in Warren Co., KY, there is no evidence that Jacob or the rest of his family also
lived there. In fact, Jacob is next documented in Warren Co., TN in 1808, when he and his son Michael both entered
land on the north fork of Caney Fork of the Cumberland River. By 1812, not only were Jacob and his son living in that
county, but so were his brothers Michael, Andrew and (probably) Daniel. The 1812 tax list for Warren Co., TN is the
last time Jacob is documented, and as noted above, he probably died between 1812-1820 in Warren Co., TN.

Jacob's widow Christiana appears in that same county in the 1820 census, and a land record in which her farm is divided
provides a good record of their surviving heirs. Earlier census records indicate there were as many as eleven
children, but only seven or eight survived their parents to be named among the heirs.

Unlike his probable brothers Michael and Adam, Jacob remained in Burke Co., NC until after 1800. His family appears in
Warren Co., TN by 1808, as evidenced by the land record below. A later probate record indicates Jacob's wife was
Christiana (see her notes for details), so it appears that many of Jacob's children remained in the Warren and
Henderson Co., TN area. As Christiana is listed as head of household in the 1820 census, it seems Jacob died prior to
1820.

Probable Children

The 1790 census suggests six children at that time: four sons, all under 16, and 2 daughters. The 1800 census
suggests that the oldest son, Henry, was not in the household (his whereabouts are unknown), but the remaining three
sons from 1790 (all now age 10-15) and both daughters (both age 16-25) were still in the household. In addition were
four more sons and one more daughter, all age under 10. Given Christiana's age, it is unlikely that they had any more
children born after 1800.

It is also possible that one of the sons from 1790 had died before 1800, and that Henry was still in the household
along with his wife and young son Allen. This would also require that daughter Elizabeth's age was mismarked in 1800,
listed as under 10 when she was actually about 13 or 14 years old, and that Henry's own age was also mismarked, listed as age 10-16 when he was actually about 25. The first scenario in which Henry was not in the household is probably more likely.

dau Margaret (in 1790, 16-25 in 1800); b. 1778
son (<16 in 1790, 10-15 in 1800); b. 1782?
son Michael (<16 in 1790, 10-15 in 1800); b. 1785
dau Elizabeth (in 1790, 16-25 in 1800); b. 1787
son John (<16 in 1790, 10-15 in 1800, enumerated separately in 1820); b. 1790

son Isaac (<10 in 1800, 18-26 in 1820); b. 1798
dau (<10 in 1800, not in household in 1820); b. 1799? [this could possibly have been Kessiah Jane]

His widow's household in 1820 probably included a daughter-in-law and granddaughter (wife and daughter of Isaac).

A later land record shows his widow's farm had been split among eight heirs, of which seven were named in the record:
Henry, Margaret, Michael, Elizabeth, John, Abraham, and Isaac. (See Christiana's notes for details.) The eighth share
was by the time of the record owned by John Brown and Asahel Rains Hammer. The original owner of that eighth share is unknown, but could have been the Kessiah Jane "Cassie" Derryberry who later moved to Dade Co., GA. Whether or not there was a blood relationship between John Brown, A. R. Hammer, and Jacob's family is unknown. Asahel Rains Hammer is said to have married Elizabeth Swope (b. abt 1826), and John Brown's wife is said to have been an Emeline.

Bio:
Daughter of John Sloman and Katherine Eppes. 11 Dec 1653 married Robert Wynne II, she, the wealthy widow of Capt. Francis Poythress. Upon his marriage, Robert Wynne became an instant father to Mary’s four children by Francis Poythress; they had at least four more children of their own: Robert, Thomas, Joshua and Mary. She was buried next to her husband at Jordan's Church, est. 1657, now Merchants Hope Church.
NOTE: FG does not have a link to the Merchants Hope Church cemetery, est.1657, which is next door to Merchants Hope Memorial Park.

Amonute Matoaka, aka Pocahontas, with her husband, John Rolfe, gave birth to a son, Thomas, in 1615. She then died on that trip to England in 1616. Her son Thomas Rolfe then married Jane Poythress, Mary Sloman's child and Robert Wynne’s stepchild. They had a daughter, Jane Rolfe.
All stones at Jordan's Church were destroyed by Northern troops during the Civil War.
