Col. Frederick Hambright, who came with his parents and brothers from Germany to Philadelphia at the age of 11, on board the ship the St. Andrew's. He is believed to have received a sound education that fitted him well for his activities in later life. About 1755 he moved from Lancaster County, Pa., to Virginia where he married Sarah Hardin. In 1760, he settled near the South Fork of the Catawba River in North Carolina. As Hambright became immersed in the "American melting pot," he took part in battles against the Indians and the British. He served also in the provincial congress of the State of North Carolina. The value of his services was recognized by promotion to the rank of lieutenant colonel of militia. This was the rank he held in 1780 when he received such a severe thigh wound in the action at Kings Mountain that he was forced to resign his commission. Finally, on March 9, 1817, at the age of 90, Hambright died on property he had purchased in later life in the vicinity of Kings Mountain. He is buried in the old Shiloh Presbyterian Church cemetery, not far from Kings Mountain Military Park boundary. Tombstone reads: Col. Frederick Hambright Born 1727 in Germany Died 1817 in York County, SC Migrated to Pennsylvania in 1738 Removed to Tryon County, NC before 1750 A True Patriot He rendered notable civil and military service for the cause of freedom Family Members Spouses Sarah Hardin Hambright 1733-1780 Mary Dover Hambright 1762-1835 Children Nancy Rhyne Hambright Stroup 1748-1824 Mary Hambright Kuykendall 1756-1842 Capt John Hambright 1762-1830 MAJ Frederick Hambright 1766-1844 Sarah Ann Hambright Eaker 1768-1826 Henry Hambright 1782-1836 Sophia Hambright Quin 1789-1874 Josiah Hambright 1791-1826 Abner Hambright 1793-1816 Susannah Hambright Dixon 1798-1882 Created by: Hope (46790939) Added: 2005-06-12T16:38:28.000Z URL: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/11149847/frederick_hambright Citation: Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/11149847/frederick-hambright: accessed July 10, 2024), memorial page for Col Frederick Hambright (1 May 1727-9 Mar 1817), Find a Grave Memorial ID 11149847, citing Old Shiloh Presbyterian Cemetery, Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina, USA; Maintained by Hope (contributor 46790939). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Found at DAR.org on 7/10/2024 HAMBRIGHT, FREDERICK Ancestor #: A049995 Notice: DATA IN THE CORRECTION FILE (WHY?) When Hance was 14 years Old, in early 1749, Grandfather Hugh McWhorter died at Pencader Hundreds, New Castle, Delaware. After his estate was settled in late 1749, Hance's father packed up the family and moved to the Marsh Creek Settlement to join others that moved there in late 1729 after landing at New Castle. Marsh Creek Settlement was located where Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania now stands which is about 100 Miles due west of New Castle. About the year 1753, when Hance was 18, his father took up roots again and they moved to the Davidson Creek Settlement, then located in Rowan County, North Carolina. Many of the original group that came to New Castle in August 1729 had moved on and founded the Davidson Creek Settlement. Apparently messages had been sent back to Marsh Creek telling about abundant land available. So almost all of Hance's father Johns brothers and sisters as well as his mother Jane joined in the resettlement to North Carolina. In 1756 Hance married Sarah Winsley/Winslow the daughter of Benjamin and Mary White Winsley/Winslow. After receiving land from his father they settled down and raised a family. By occupation Hance was a Wheelwright which was a very important occupation at that time. Hance was a Lt in the French-Indian War from Rowan County. His father John and his brother-in-Law, Benjamin Winsley. Jr as well as his wife's uncle, Moses White, Jr were in the same Military Company with him during this war.(NC State Records Vol. 22, p.398) Early records: 2 June 1761- Hance's parents, John and Mary McWhorter, sold to "Hans" McWhorter 300 Acres of land for 34 pounds ajoining the lands of Alexander Osborn, John Brevard in Rowan County, North Carolina. 21 Dec 1761 Hance received a land grant from Lord Granville of 269 Acres of land on Rocky River, adjoining lands of James Robinson, Robert Brevard, Henry Potts and his father John McWhorter. 7 Nov 1764-Samuel Blyth conveyed to Hance McWhorter, "Rowan County, Wheelwright", "460 Acres of land located on the southside of the Catawba River, North of Fishing Creek" then located in North Carolina. After a boundary dispute was settled this location ended up in York County, South Carolina. Fishing Creek runs through the City of York, York County, SC. In fact runs within a stone throw just south and west of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. From the description in the deed this church would also be located within that description. Hance's property appears to have been located in the vicinity and Church records shows Hance to be an active member. 22 Feb 1771 Hance McWhorter was one of six ruling elders of this church that signed on a deed accepting a donation of land to the church. 18 October 1772 Hance McWhorter was so weak in Body that he made his Will. 29 April 1773 Hance McWhorter died, Age 38. His will was proved 29 June 1773, York County, South Carolina.
