Martha E. Woodruff

Birth: Mar. 11, 1836
Death: Mar. 2, 1864

According to the transcribed records of Arawana Kyle she took back in 1966, the dates match Martha E. Woodruff wife of John W. Woodruff. The head stone does look broken at the top and is laying on the ground.

The transcribed records done by Arawana Kyle in 1966, were sent to me by Linda Lamb Monticelli.

Father David Darnall, Senior, d. 30 Jun 1702, Richmond, Virginia, United States of America
Mother Margritt Morgan, b. 1648, Virginia, United States of America ??**?? Morgan? - not Mott?
Notes
?Research notes on the Darnall family were originally credited to Sally Darnall Webb Federer who was cited in the Darnall Family History book written in 1979 as having discovered the roots of the Darnall family.

The first Historical reference for David Darnall was 4 May 1686 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He was asked to leave the state which was Catholic at the time, due to his marriage to Margritt. The legal request calls Margritt and her children 'pretended', suggesting they were not recognized by the Catholic Church. Margritt was a Quaker, and both David Darnall and his fellow militant non-conformist Parson John Waugh seemed in constant conflict with the State over religion and the rights of Quakers retaining property they had been granted and purchased. David proceeded with his suit until it brought about his financial ruin, and despite moving to Richmond County, Virginia, was still persecuted until his death.

Margritt's surname is also noted as Mott and Stone in some family histories. Margritt's will was written after David's death in which she noted her sons which she could not have written without having been legally married to David. ********

--the following was in the notes of her husband John Woodson:

Dr. John and Sarah came to the Virginia Colonies 29 January 1619/1629 on the Shiip George. The Muster records shows John Woodson and wife Sarah with "Corne, 4 bushells; Powder, 1 lb; Lead, 3 lb; Peece fixt, 1; Sword, 1" Dr. John was a surgeon and was serving a company of soldiers from England. He settled in Flowerdew Hundred, also known as Peirsey's Hundred. This land lay on the south side of the James River.

It was there that Dr. John lost his life and the stories passed down were varied about the different Indian attacks. One story said that Sarah threw mattresses in the fire place and lit them to keep the Indians from coming in that way. The most common story is that Sarah saved her sonsm, John, and Robert, by hiding one under a tub and the other in a "potato hole". When John was killed, Sarah remarried a Mr. Johnson and the inventory of her estate was recorded in January 1660 in Henrico County.

THE STITH FAMILY
From Malone and Allied Families
By Dr. Randolph A. Malone

The earliest known Malone wife was Mary Wynne Malone (b. c 167'7), whose mother
was Agnes Stith Wynne, wife of Capt. Thomas Wynne. Many researchers have missed
the fact that Agnes Wynne was the daughter of Maj. John Stith, and in genealogies have
referred to her as "Agnes ___" or "Agnes Tucker". The Stith's were great contributors to Colonial Virginia and were closely involved with those early families connected with the Malones.

The Stith family appears to have had their roots in the parish of Kirkham, in Lancashire, England. Parish registers and wills show numerous Stith references, though none which would point directly to the immigrant ancestor John Stith, whose family probably moved elsewhere prior to his emigration. Major John Stith had- arrived in colonial Virginia before 1656, and received a 500 acre land grant to himself and Samuel Earle on the north side of the James River in Charles City County dated 2-15-1663. [VA Patent Book 5, p 268] He also had a 550 acre grant on 7-29-1664 and 636 acres 5-1-1665 in addition to the tracts which he purchased. He had a large landed estate at his death. ["William & Mary Quarterly", Vol. XXI (Series 1) pp 181-2]

John Stith was a Charles City Co. militia lieutenant in 1656, and a captain in 1676. He was on the side of the colonial government in Bacon's Rebellion. He was made a major of
militia in 1680, was one of the magistrates of the county, and a practicing lawyer. ["Wm. &
Mary Quarterly" Vol. XXI series 1 p 182] He was thereafter referred to as "Major John Stith." He represented Charles City Co. in the House of Burgesses 1685-86. He may have
had a previous marriage, (possibly to a Drury.) In 1656 he married Jane, widow of Joseph Parsons. .Jane had previously been married to Thomas Gregory before his death. Her maiden name is unknown, but may well have been "Drury" since he named his other son Drury, and he had no other previous known family connections prior to his immigration. In May, 1677 he was one of the persons commissioned to take depositions regarding grievances of the people of Charles City County. ["Wm. & Mary Quarterly" Vol. XXI Series 1 pp 182-3]

Major John Stith wrote his will dated 11-13-1690, with a codicil added on 10-3-1693. The will was proved 4-3-1694, and is found in Charles City County Wills & Deeds 1689 -1694, pp 185-187, on record at the Virginia State Library. It is abstracted as follows:

I, John Stith, Sen'r, of the parish of Westover, in Charles City County, in Virginia, Gent, being well in body ....

And my will is that my son Drury shall take his share in my estate out of those goods & chattells being at the plantcon before to him bequeathed as far as the same shall amount.

Janice Carroll "Jan Van" Lee Van Engen

Birth: Jan. 14, 1946
Chester
Dodge County
Georgia, USA
Death: Feb. 23, 2013
Fayetteville
Fayette County
Georgia, USA

Janice Lee Van Engen, age 67, of Fayetteville, Georgia, died on February 23, 2013.

Known as "Jan Van" to her friends, she was born in Chester, Georgia, and moved all over the country with her husband, Ronald J. Van Engen, Sr., who preceded her in death. As they settled in new places for Ron's work with NASA and government contractors, Jan easily cultivated and maintained friendships. She was a retired nurse known for her flash and style, always with an eye for a good deal. Jan was also known for her generous heart and spirit, often helping those she encountered by providing a meal or a tank of gas. She invited scores of strangers into her home, providing the precious gift of a listening ear, and often sent or took presents to people who were sick.

A friend said, "Jan was the most direct and funniest person I had ever met." It was not uncommon to hear someone say that they felt closer to Jan than to members of their own family. Friends were again amazed at Jan's indomitable spirit after a serious car wreck in which she and Ron were involved in 1999 left her hospitalized for two months, in intensive rehabilitation for several years and pursuing "getting my whole self back" ever after. Jan had suffered colon, liver and kidney injuries, lost her spleen, broken both arms and had a severe brain injury. It was the latter that proved most challenging, but which also caused her to be a great inspiration, with the Executive Director of the Brain Injury Resource Foundation asking Jan to write a book and serve as a spokesperson. During her ongoing recovery, Jan called on her own training as a nurse, as well as alternative treatments and the many "helps" she had brought to bear in the past for others.

Two and a half years after the accident she lost Ron to a heart attack. She also was preceded in death by her father, Jack Boyce Lee of Chester, Georgia.

Surviving were her son Ronald J. Van Engen of Euless, Texas; her grandchildren Cody and Joshua Myers of Brunswick, Georgia; her mother Mildred B. Lee of Chester, South Carolina; sister Sandy James of Canton, Georgia; sister Lynn Criscione of Spartanburg, South Carolina; brother Joel Lee of Chester; brother Neil Lee of Chester; brother John Lee of Rio de Janeiro; and numerous nieces and cousins.

She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, Georgia, where a funeral service was held on February 26, 2013. Reverend Jamie Lambert officiated. The family received friends on February 25, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mowell Funeral Home in Fayetteville, Georgia.

As memorials, donations were suggested for the Southwest Christian Care Hospice (www.swchristiancare.org), 7225 Lester Road, Union City, GA 30291.

Bio:
Philip II Augustus was the King of France from 1180 until his death. A member of the House of Capet, Philip Augustus was born at Gonesse in the Val-d'Oise, the son of Louis VII and his third wife, Adela of Champagne. He was originally nicknamed Dieudonné-the God-given-as he was the first son of Louis VII late in his father's life.
Philip was one of the most successful medieval French monarchs in expanding the royal demesne and the influence of the monarchy. He broke up the great Angevin Empire and defeated a coalition of his rivals (German, Flemish and English) at the Battle of Bouvines in 1214. He reorganized the government, bringing financial stability to the country and making possible a sharp increase in prosperity. His reign was popular with ordinary people because he checked the power of the nobles and passed some of it on to the growing middle class.
In declining health, Louis VII had him crowned and anointed at Rheims by the Archbishop William Whitehands on November 1, 1179. He was married on April 28, 1180 to Isabelle of Hainaut, who brought the County of Artois as her dowry. His father died on 20 September 1180.
Philip's eldest son, Louis, was born on 5 September 1187 and inherited Artois in 1190, when Isabelle, his mother, died.
Philip went on the Third Crusade (1189-1192) with Richard I of England (1189-99) and the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick I Barbarossa (1155-90).
By the time Acre surrendered on July 12 1191, Philip was severely ill with dysentery which reduced his crusading zeal. Ties with Richard were further strained after the latter acted in a haughty manner after Acre had fallen.
Philip II Augustus died 14 July 1223 at Mantes and was interred in Saint Denis Basilica. Philip's son by Isabelle de Hainaut, Louis VIII, was his successor.

Bio:
SUSAN STRINGER BENNETTMrs. Susan Bennett of Livingston County is 95 years of age and well preserved. Mrs. Susan Stringer Bennett of Livingston Co. Ky. enjoys the distinction of being the only surviving Daughter of the American Revolution in Kentucky, and one of the few and perhaps the oldest in the United States. Ms. Bennett is 95 years of age and resides in the place to which she came with her husband, a young bride, over 70 years age. Her home is six miles from Smithland and two and one half miles from the Tennessee River. It is a log house in the heart of the woods and has escaped, to a measure, the ravages of time. Mrs. Bennett has just been admitted to the D.A.R. Chapter of Paducah. A telegram from Mrs. August Danforth Greer, registar general at Washington, announcing that Mrs. Bennett's record had been verified and that she was eligible to be unrolled as a real Daughter of the Revolution, was recieved by the regent of the Paducah Chapter. Mrs. H.S. Wells while she was at the Kentucky State Society, D.A.R. Convention, in Louisville recently. She was elected by the national society Oct 5, 1904.Mrs. Bennett is the daughter of Leonard Stringer, who was born in Georgia in 1760, and entered the Revolutionary Army at about the age of 15. He drove a provision wagon until he was considered old enough to enter the regular service. A grant of land for his service was given him by Edward Telfair, captain, governor and commander-in-chief of Georgia and is now filed in the secretary of state's office. It is dated Jan 20,1786, and calls for 287 acres in Washington Co. Ga. Leonard Stringer was married three times and Mrs. Bennett is a daughter of his second marriage with Mrs. Dolly Ware Williams, a widow. She was born in 1810 in Georgia, but her earliest recollection is of living with her parents near Nashville,Tn. She says that her father and Andrew Jackson were intimate friends at that time and she remember to have frequently seen them riding horse-back together. Her father moved to Kentucky when she was about ten years of age. He settled in Livingston County, and after remaining there a year went to Southern Illinois, where his daughter stayed until her marriage, when she returned to Kentucky. Her husband was Alfred Bennett who was born in Livingston County in 1808. He, too went to Illinois when quite young but brought his wife to Kentucky a year after their marriage and passed the remainder of his life near his birthplace. He died about 17 years ago and was buried in Miller Cemetery near his widow's home. Leonard Stringer was a man of versatility. Besides being a soldier he was a doctor, a minister and a school teacher. He preached in the pulpit of the church John Wesley, the father of Methodism, established in Savannah,Ga. and got into a controversy with the followers of Wesley of the subject of baptism. Mr. Stringer being an ardent Baptist. Mrs. Bennett is remarkably well preserved and delights to talk of other days. When I called to see her, she was propped up in an old four poster bedstead, which must have been at least 100 years old. She wore a black lace cap over her scant grey locks, and her small black eyes beamed with intelligence and interest in all around her. It took little encouragement to get her to talk of her recollections. Yes, my father was in the Revolutionary War. I often heard him tell about it. He knew George Washington very well. He was in prison once or in some sort of a barricade. The prisoners were not given enough to eat, just a morsel of bread and a morsel of meat. A lot of parsley grew inside the prison walls and the prisoners thougth of putting it in a pot ans cooking it with their bits of meat. He was in prison when Cornwallis was taken to Yorktown. Leonard Stringer came to live wioth his daughter after her marriage since his last wife was dead. He lived in Livingston County and is buried in the same old cemetery in which others of Mrs. bennett's family are laid to rest. His death occurred in 1843. Mrs. Bennett is a very devout church woman and is the only living memver os the original ones of Friendship Baptist Church within a mile of her home. It was established in 1840 and she and her husband were the first people baptized between Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers at the point where she lives. A flax wheel over 100 years old has been preserved in the Bennett household; she also has a large platter and an old sugar blowl of blue china which are a century or more old. Mrs. Bennett was perfectly active until 17 years ago, when she had a fall, which injured her hip. And she has never since left home. She stays in bed most of the time, but occasionally walks around her room and sits in a chair. She will be 95 next April. Two high poster beds, a mahogany fresser and a fine walnut corner cupboard of hers were owned by a granddaughter, Angie Robertson, of Iuka. The children of Susan Stinger and Alfred Bennett were: Rebecca,1831, married Owen Jones; Dorothy, 1833, married Tom Leech; Nathan, 1835, married Vitula Hurley; John,1837, died in battle, CSA; William, 1839, married Ann Dycus(She later married Owen Jones); Lucinda, 1840, married Owen Jones; Serena, 1843, married J.W. Judith Tarleton Fleming Woodson

Bio:
=====
Stephen Tarleton was living in York County, Virginia by 1659, and worked as a Tobacco appraiser. In a deposition given by him on June 24, 1659 in the York County Court, he stated he was 22 years of age. Thus Stephen was born in 1637. He was involved in a dispute with a servant, Edward Jenkins, and there are several refrences in the county records. Stephen lived in New Kent County, in Blisland Parish, in the area that later became St. Peter's Parish at least by 1663, when he patented 394 acres of land. His land was on the north side of the main branch of" Blackwater Creek" and a fork of "Chickahominy Swamp". This was just a short distance from the Woodson's over the line from what is now "Hanover County", The Blackwater Creek area is just across the" Pamunkey River" from St. Peter's Parish , where Stephen was a vestryman (1685-1687). Stephen was one of the men involved in Bacon's Rebellion. A number of New Kent County men were recruited by Nathaniel Bacon, when he set out on his mission against the Pamunkey Indians. One of the groups remained in New Kent County, after the Rebellion, at the Brick House, until Christmas time, months after Bacon had died. The group finally disintegrated with the show of British force in York River. This was still in Blisland Parish at the time. Stephen was one of those who suffered because of his part in the Rebellion, and his letter to the honorable Herbert Jeffries Morrison, his Majesty's Commissioners in Virginia follows:

The humble petition of Stephen Tarleton, of New Kent County most humbly sheweth."

" That your petitioner as he most pentiteently and sorrowfully acknowledgth, seduced into the late horrible Rebellion, and taken yet unlawful oath umposed by the late Grand Rebel; Nathaniel Bacon, Jr. and being conscious of his guilt, there of upon the first publishing his most sacred Majesty's gratious, and surpassing act of pardon, to his distressed subject of his late disloyall Colony , lay hold of the same, and take the oath ready to perform those other due and reasonable conditions which by his Majesty's said pardon he is justly enjoyed to doe,and being by the honorable Governors, proclamation of the ninth of February last, referred to the determination of your honor beseeched mercy and pardon for his said crimes, and humbly prayeth yet he may be admitted to the full benefit of his Majesty's said act of pardon".

It is not known when Stephen went to Kent County, to live, but he had lived a colorful life before he left York County. He had appeared in court there, concerning the deposition of Mary Gunnell, a servant girl, on April 12, 1660; Mary deposed, says Stephen Torlington got her with child, and did use her several times by day; and also by night in her master's hall and also other places. Even after all this; his reputation must have not been to badly tarnished. For he surely met his future bride in York County.

Stephen married Susanna Bates, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Bates of York County.John Bates was born in Kent County, England in 1598, and settled in York County Virginia. John Bates, age 24, was listed amoung the muster of Mr. Abraham Peirsey, at"Peirsey's Hundred" in 1624. He was amoung the servant's of Abraham Peirsey and had come to the colony on the "Southampton" in 1623. The Bates family would be leaders in the Quaker movement.

Most of this information is from "Tidewater Virginia Families" by Virginia Lee Hutchenson Davis.
