Notes for John DERRYBERRY

Biography

John Derryberry was one of seven "first-generation" Derryberry men who appear in the records of Burke Co., NC prior to
1800. Given that he died relatively young, we know the least about him of any of the seven. However, given that his
children were born in the 1770's, we can estimate that he was contemporary with his probable brothers Adam, Jacob and Michael, born in the late 1740's or early 1750's.

John entered land on Silver Creek in Burke Co., NC 1778 next to his probable brother Michael, Jacob Hipps, John Pearson and Thomas Canady. The land record files of these two properties are rather interesting, summarized as follows:

Entry 335, 9 Mar 1778. Michael Derryberry, 100 a on branch of Kennedy's Fork of Silver Creek, including said
Derryberry's improvements for compliment. Warrant dated 18 Jun 1779. Survey 26 Feb 1780. Michael Derryberry, lying
on both sides of Kennedy's Fork of Silver Creek. Bounded by Widow Derryberry, James Thompson and John [Friend?] Chain bearers: George Hipps and And. Derryberry. Grant 431 dated 28 Oct 1782, Michael Derryberry. (File 429, book 44, p. 181.)

Entry 336, 9 Mar 1778. John Derryberry, 100 a on north side of Michael Derryberry's entry including said Derryberry's
improvements for compliment. Warrant dated 18 Jun 1779. Survey 26 Feb 1780. John Derryberry Jnr., lying on both
sides of Kennedy's Fork of Silver Creek. Bounded by Michael Derryberry and John Pearson. Chain bearers: George Hipps and And. Derryberry. Grant 389 dated 28 Oct 1782, John Derryberry Jnr. (File 338, book 44, p. 154.)

John's and Michael's properties were entered, surveyed, and granted all on the same dates. While Michael's 1778 entry
noted it was adjacent to John Derryberry, his 1780 survey and 1782 grant both noted it was adjacent to "widow
Derryberry." Correspondingly, while John's 1778 entry was for "John", his 1780 survey and 1782 grant were in the name
of "John Jnr." Despite the fact that John Jnr. was a child in 1780, the most likely explanation is that John Sr., who
entered the land in Mar 1778, died before it could be surveyed in Feb 1780, with his widow taking over the process.
The timing of his death suggests it could have had something to do with the Revolutionary War, but there is no document of his service, and this is purely speculation. Note that his younger brother Andrew, who served as chain carrier for the 1780 survey, enlisted in the war the following year.

John's widow was almost certainly the Hannah Derryberry who appears in the 1790 census and the 1793 and 1794 tax lists for the Silver Creek area of Burke Co. She was taxed on 100 acres, likely the same 100 acre property entered in 1778. Furthermore, she is listed in the 1790 census in 13th Company, Burke Co., close to George and Jacob Hipps, and John and Thomas Pearson, names noted in the land records above as adjoining John's 1778 entry. Thirteenth Company encompassed the Silver Creek area.

It does not appear that his widow Hannah ever remarried, and they seem to have had three sons, one over 16 two under 16 in 1790. His children were the only "second-generation" Derryberrys to remain in North Carolina. Five of John's
brothers migrated west to Tennessee with their children between 1795 and 1809, and while the sixth (George) died in
1806 in Burke Co., his three daughters moved to Tennessee with their half- and step-siblings between 1830 and 1840.

Notes for Hannah [DERRYBERRY]

Biography

Hannah was one of two Derryberry widows listed in the 1790 census in Burke Co., NC, both in 13th Company, which
encompassed the Silver Creek area. Hannah had in her household three sons, one over 16 years of age and two younger.
This puts her of about the expected age of a widow of one of the first-generation Derryberry men, and her neighbors in
that census share surnames of abutters to the land entry of the John Derryberry who died about 1779. Thus it is
believed that Hannah was the widow of John.

Census records place her birth date between 1755 and 1765, but given that she had sons born before 1774, and assuming she was John's only wife, it is likely that she was born in the early 1750's, and likely no later than 1755. She and John probably married in the early 1770's, and following his death in about 1779, she did not remarry, but raised their three sons on her own. She is listed in the 1793 and 1794 Burke Co. tax lists in Capt. Mackey's company (Silver Creek area), and in the 1800 census.

In 1800, she is listed near Michael and George Derberry, who are assumed to have been two of her sons. The third son
is still in her household, and is presumed to have been John Jr., although his stated age of 16-25 in that census is
probably a slight underestimate. In 1810 and 1820, she is probably the female age over 44 years in the household of
Michael Derreberry, but does not appear in 1830 or later. We can surmise that in her older years she was cared for by
her son Michael's family and that she died in Burke Co. between 1820 and 1830.

Sources

The following Burke Co. land record ca. 1778, from the files of Eugene Jefferson Pearson, indicates that a "widow
Derreberry" lived in what was in 1790 13th Co. of Morgan Dist. (where John Pearson was enumerated).
"1610 John PIERSON (PEARSON) 600 On both sides of GILLEY's Fork of Silver Creek on west side of Falling Branch bounded by widow DERREBERRY, James THOMPSON, John KENNEDY, & said PEARSON's own land."

Although widow Anne also lived in that company, the abutters here match those on land records to John Derryberry (entry 1778) and Michael Derryberry (entry 1778), suggesting that this widow was Hannah. She is also referred to as widow Derryberry on the survey and grant for Michael's entry. (See Hannah's husband's notes for details.)

1790 US census, 13th Co., Morgan Dist., Burke Co., NC
Anne Direberry (2 males >16 yrs, 1 fem)
Andrew Direberry (1 male >16, 1 fem)
Hana Direberry (1 male >16, 2 males <16, 1 fem)

It will be assumed that Hannah's family above consisted of herself and 3 sons.

Burke Co., NC Tax Lists:
1793, Capt. Mackey's Co., Silver Creek; Hannah Derryberry, 100 acres
1794, Capt. Mackey's Co., Silver Creek; Hannah Derryberry, 100 acres

1800 US census, Burke Co., NC
Michael Derberry (1 male 16-25, 1 fem <10, 1 fem 16-25 yrs)
Hannah Durberry (1 male 16-25, 1 fem 26-44 yrs)
George Derberry (1 male <10, 1 male 16-25, 1 fem 16-25)

Although the 1800 census was ordered alphabetically and not in direct order of visitation, these 3 appear on the same
image and likely lived close. It will be assumed that Michael and George were two of Hannah's 3 sons, and the third
remained living with her in 1800.

Name: William Frizzell
Sex: M
Death: 1676 in Lancaster County, Virginia
Note:
William Frizzell and Ann Pritchard apparently both came from England, William either alone or with members of his own family, and Ann with her parents, Robert and Frances Pritchard.

William Frizzell was born sometime prior to 1640, probably in England. We know that he was in Lancaster County, Virginia some time before Jan 1664 when Ferdinando Austin who received a headright grant of 300 acres "for transporting" Six persons, including Wm.Frisell into the Colony. Anyone who came from England was considered a "headright" even if that person traveled back and forth several times. The "headrights" were then bought or sold until someone finally used them to obtain a "headright grant" which provided about50 acres of land for each "person transported". Thus there is no necessary relationship between William Frizzell and Fardinando Austin. although William Frizzell did later give the Spanish name of Francisco to his only son. It is possible that William Frizzell was related to others with similar names who were in Virginia as early as 1649.

On 11 September 1661, Audry Frizell, Wife of Willliam Frizell, was the administrix of her deceased former husband, Charles Hill, who must have died sometime shortly after March 1659 when he was involved in his last land transaction. From this we can assume that William (Also referred to in his document as John Frizell) and the widow,Audrey Hill were married about 1660. The marriage, however, was brief, since Audrey Frizzell is last mentioned in a documented date 10 Feb 1663/4 in Lancaster county. Sometime shortly after that date William married his second wife, Ann Pritchard, daughter if Robert and Frances Pritchard of Lancaster County. Ann also mentioned as the wife of William Frizzell in a court hearing dated 10 December 1673.

William Frizzell wrote his will on 13 Aug 1675, "sick if body but perfect and sound in memory", naming his wife Ann, as his Executrix, although she was "absent in England" at the time. for that reason he provided that Col. Wm. Travers and Alexander English be deputies. Presumably Ann returned from England and her husband lived for about another year since his will was probated in Lancaster County on 18 September 1676

We know from This will of Frances Pritchard, written in October 1679, that her daughter,Ann, had two children by her marriage to George Finch, Rebecca Finch and Elizabeth Finch, who are named as grand daughters.

William Frizzell in his own will mentions that he has four children, but names only two, Francisco and Margaret. A third, Mary, is named in the will of his wife, Frances Frizzell. The fourth child remains unknown and could possible be a child of his first marriage to Audrey Hill.

Notes for Michael C. DERRYBERRY

Biography

Michael C. was born in North Carolina, almost certainly in Burke Co., where Andrew was living at that time. Some
secondary sources give his middle name as either "Crockett" or "Charles." The former is very unlikely since Davy
Crockett was only a boy when Michael was born, and there is likewise no evidence for the latter. The initial may have
stood for "Christopher," since Christopher Pearson was a family friend of his parents.

He moved west to Tennessee with his parents about 1808, settling first in Warren Co., then moved again to Perry Co. in
the 1820s. In 1829 he married Rutha Doss, who was probably a sister of the Mariah Doss who married Adam Derryberry's
grandson Albert G. From 1830-1837, Michael and Rutha lived and farmed near his father near Perryville and Decaturville
in Perry Co. (modern-day Decatur Co.), TN. His son Andrew's Confederate pension record states Michael was sheriff of
Perry Co. at one time.

In 1838, Michael bought a farm in the southwest part of Madison Co., TN, between Medon and Uptonville. (Source:
obituary of son John W. C. states he came to Madison Co. at age 8.) Some of his siblings moved there as well. The
farm was also near Toone, on the Madison-Hardeman county line. His widowed mother Sarah lived with his family until
she died in 1855. An 1849 parish list for the Clover Creek Baptist Church in Medon names Michael, his wife, their
three oldest children, and his brother Andrew Jr. as members.

Sometime in the early 1850s, his wife's nephew (and his own first cousin twice removed) William Jordan Derryberry came
from Weakley Co., TN to Decatur Co., supposedly to work for an uncle. Although Michael and Rutha were already in
Madison Co. by that time, it is possible Michael may have been that uncle. Michael also had a son named William Jordan
Derryberry who was about the same age as his relative, so the name "William Jordan" may have been inherited through the
Doss family.

Michael and Rutha had eight children altogether. In addition to farming, Michael was also a veterinarian and loved
fine horses. "He was killed [in 1866] when a high spirited horse hitched to a buggy ran away and the buggy was dashed
against a tree." (Source: granddaughter Sallie Siler, in Bob G. Derryberry's "Derryberry Book Revision.") Michael
was buried in the Clover Creek Baptist Cemetery. After his death, Rutha lived in 1870 with their son John W. C., and
in 1880 with their son William Jordan. She died in 1893 perhaps while visiting her daughter Emily's family, since
Rutha is buried in Obion Co., TN.

Robert I d'Artois

Birth: 1216
Death: Feb. 8, 1250, Egypt

Robert I of Artois, called the Good, was the first Count of Artois, the fifth (and second surviving) son of Louis VIII of France and Blanche of Castile
He received Artois as an appanage, in accordance with the will of his father (died 1226) on attaining his majority in 1237 (aged twenty-one). In 1240 Pope Gregory IX, in conflict with the Emperor Frederick II, offered to crown Robert as emperor in opposition to Frederick, but the French count refuse to pretend to such a title.
On 14 June 1237 Robert married Matilda, daughter of Henry II of Brabant and Marie of Hohenstaufen.
They had two children:
Blanche (1248–1302)
Robert II (1250–1302)
Robert died while leading a reckless attack on Al Mansurah. He and the Templars accompanying the expedition charged into the town and became trapped in the narrow streets. According to Jean de Joinville, he defended himself for some time in a house there, but was at last overpowered and killed. According to Matthew Paris, he fled in disgrace at the height of the battle, and drowned while trying to cross a river named Thanis (a branch of the Nile). In Egypt it is believed that Sultan Qutuz killed him.

Birth: 1043 Anjou, Departement de l'Isère, Rhône-Alpes, France
Death: 14 Apr 1109 (aged 65-66) Anjou, Departement de l'Isère, Rhône-Alpes, France
Burial: Église de la Sainte-Trinité, Angers, Departement de Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France
Memorial #: 219184843

Bio:
Nobility. He was the younger of the two sons of Geoffrey II Ferreol, Comte de Gâtinais and Chateau-Landon and Ermengarde de Anjou. After several years of fighting with his brother Geoffrey over the power in Samur he was able to imprison him in 1067. Under the pressure of the church he had to release him and the fighting started anew. In the following year he was able to imprison him permanently, and he succeeded him in Anjou and Tours. During Geoffrey's reign and their fighting large parts of their territories were lost. Guillaume VIII de Aquitaine for example was able to conquer the Saintonge and King Philipp I received the Gâtinais to appease him. Even after his brothers imprisonment he had to fight against his barons who tried to revolt several times. Even his eldest son was no exception, Geoffrey III conquered Angers in 1103 and forced Fulk to share his power. Fulk was married five times; his first wife Hildegarde de Beaugency bore him a daughter but died after two years of marriage. Secondly he married Ermengarde de Bourbon who bore him his son Geoffrey, but he divorced her in 1176. His third and fourth marriage were dissolved soon after the wedding for consanguinity. In 1089 he married Bertrade de Montfort who bore him his second son, Fulk, and who left him to become the wife of Philipp I.

Robert Crockett

Birth: unknown
Death: 1747 Augusta County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Unknown

Memorial #: 61441041
Bio:
`````````````````````````````````````````````
Robert Crockett made an importation oath 22 May 1740 stating that he had come over by way of Philadelphia and paid expenses for bringing his family to Virginia. And that one son was born on the ship before reaching Philadelphia in the summer of 1730. The head-right land grant was based on bringing oneself and family to what was then Orange County, Virginia.
Possibly he resided for some or all of the intervening ten years in southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, near Chestnut Level, and is the Robert who is associated in court records of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania of the 1730's along with Joseph and Samuel Crockett.
Robert made his Last Will and Testament, 16 Nov 1746. It was proved 19 Feb 1747, Augusta County, Virginia.CHILDREN: named in will.John: (born 1730 on ship on way to America)Archibald:Jean/Jane:Samuel:Robert:James:Alexander:Andrew:(born after Robert died, the unborn child mentioned in the will.)
"CHRONICLES OF THE Scotch-Irish Settlement IN VIRGINIA EXTRACTED FROM THE
ORIGINAL COURT RECORDS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY 1745-1800
ABSTRACTS OF WILLS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA. AUGUSTA COUNTY
COURT. page 6,
WILL BOOK NO. 1.Page 24.
16th November, 1746.
Robert Crockett's will--
Wife, Margaret;
sons, John. Asbal (Arsble), land on cow pasture joining James Measl; daughter, Jean;
sons, Samuel, Robert (infant), James (infant), Alexander.
Executors, wife and Robert Davis. Teste: Thos, Gillham, James McCorkle, Robert Bratton.
Proved by all witnesses, 19th February, 1746, and both executors qualified, with sureties
James McCorkle and Robert Bratton.
Robert is sometimes referred to as Robert Crockett "of the Great Calf Pasture" because he ultimately settled on the Great River of the Calf Pasture in what is now Rockbridge County, Virginia. Before he crossed from Augusta County, Virginia westward over North Mountain to take up land on the Calf Pasture, Robert Crockett owned 322 acres in the northwest section of the Beverly Tract roughly seven miles southwest of Staunton, Virginia. The Crockett land could be described as lying on both sides of Middle River (formerly Cathey's Creek), at the eastern foot of Little North Mountain, extending east almost to Back Creek. Trimble' s Mill on his north is easily found on a good modern map.
Before 18 Nov 1751, his widow, Margaret Crockett, was married to John Ramsey. (from date on a record in estate of Robert Crockett.)
May 1755, John Ramsey appointed guardians of Samuel, James, Alexander, and Andrew Crockett.
About 1760, The Ramseys, John Crockett and Archibald Crockett Left Virginia, for first, Anson Co. NC, and ultimately Lancaster Co. SC
Howard McKnight Wilson, "The Tinkling Spring; Headwater of Freedom: A study of the Church and The People," 1732-1952 (Fishersville, Virginia, 1954) has the map and abstracts of the often mentioned importation lists and some early Presbyterian records.
All records found in Virginia thus far do not give "Watkins" as part of Robert's name, nor is the initial "W" or the suffix "Jr," used.
The Crockett Families DNA Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Crockett/ has revealed that many of the Crockett families French and Armstrong connected in their book, "Notable Southern Families - The Crockett Family" actually are not related and research in Ireland and France over the last twenty years by several Crockett researchers has shown that the claims of the "MAURY LETTER" are very inaccurate and can not be substantiated, the people named in the Maury letter cannot be found in actual records. And at this point in time, there is inadequate documentation to prove who of the American Crocketts, IF ANY, descend from an Antoine de Crocketagne.(W. Lawrence)
•Event: Legal Records Unknown 22 May 1740 Court of Orange Co., Va - Robert Crockett made oath of importation
•Note:
Robert married Margaret McCorkle in Ireland. His first son, John, was born ** ?? McCorkle or Davis ??
onboard ship in Jul 1730 before the ship reached port. It is believed that
Robert, Margaret and their newborn son John landed in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania in late 1730, and probably settled in Lancaster Pennsylvania
until spring of 1740 when they migrated to the Beverly Patent, Augusta County,
Virginia. He made an importation oath on 22 May 1740 stating that "he
imported himself, Margaret, John, Arsball [Archibald], Jane, Samuel &
Robert Jr. from Ireland to Philadelphia and from thence into this colony at
his own charges". The oath was taken for the purpose of getting a head-right
land grant based on bringing oneself and family to the Colony of Virginia.
Robert Crockett first owned 322 acres in the northwest section of the Beverly
Tract roughly seven miles southwest of Staunton, Virginia. The Beverly
Tract land was located at the eastern foot of Little North Mountain, extending
east almost to Back Creek. It was located on both sides of Middle River
(formerly Catheys Creek). Trimble's Mill on the north of his land can be
found on a good modern map. "The Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom:
A Study of the Church and the People 1732-1952, (Fishervillle, VA, 1954),
Howard McKnight Wilson, has a map of settlements and abstracts of the
often-mentioned importation lists and some early Presbyterian records.
Robert Crockett is listed as a private in Captain John Willson's Company
in the Augusta Co. Militia in 1742 during the French and Indian War. The
only other Crockett listed in Captain Willson's Company in 1742 was Alexander
Crockett, (Robert's brother). Among others in the militia were two close
neighbors, John Trimble and William King, and also Robert Davis,
who became the executor of Robert Crockett's will a few years later.
The next year, on November 24, 1743, Robert Crockett was made a lieutenant
in the Orange County Virginia Militia.
Robert Crockett sold his land in the Beverly Tract to William McFeeters
in 1743, and then crossed over North Mountain to take up land on the Calfpasture.
He is sometimes referred to as "of the Great Calfpasture, since he ultimately
settled on the Great River of the Calfpasture, a part of present-day Rockbridge
County, taken off in 1778 from Augusta County, Virginia, which itself was
formed from Orange Co., Virginia. Records also refer to nearby locations
as Cowpasture and Bullpasture. Robert Crockett died in 1746 in Augusta
County, Virginia. Surveys in Bath County, Virginia in 1746 for Cowpasture
show Robert Crockett, 300 acres with a patent date of 1750.
Tradition states that one of the older daughters of Robert Davis married Robert
Crockett, so we will bring in the Crockett records along with the Davis records.
Kegley shows that Robert Crockett received a grant of 350 acres on Sept. 28,
1745 on Luney's Mill Creek. Prior to this however Robert Crockett had proved
his importation with an affidavit in Orange Co. Va. as follows: "Robert Crockett,
for himself, Margaret his wife, John, Arshbell, Jane, Samuel and Robert."
Chalkley's Annals of Augusta county show the will of ROBERT CROCKETT dated
Nov. 16, 1746. He named, Wife - Margaret, Sons: John, Asbal, Samuel, Robert,
James, Alexander, and Jane. Executors were Wife and ROBERT DAVIS. Witnesses
were: Thomas Gillham, James McCorkle, Robert Bratton. Proved by all witnesses,
Feb. 19, 1746.
ROBERT CROCKETT, son of Robert Watkins Crockett - died 1747 in VA.
Married: MARGARET (Davis ??)
The will of Robert Crockett, given as son of Robert Watkins Crockett
is recorded in Augusta Co. VA. as follows: (An Abstract)
WILL BOOK No. 1, page 24.
Signed Nov. 16, 1746. Probated Feb. 6, 1747.
Executors named: Wife Margaret and ROBERT DAVIS.
Genforum.genealogy.com website:
My ancestor Jacob Garrett was in Prince Edward Co, VA in 1770s and moved to Jefferson Co, TN where he died in 1790 (1796?). He lived in an area of Prince Edward Co, VA that was previously in Amelia Co, VA that is "on the banks of the Appomattox River".
His neighbors were John Garrett, Obediah Woodson, Benjamin Johns and John Arnold. Some of his property was sold eventually to a John Finley. Jacob had sons named Henry and John, who lived in Williamson Co, TN.
Some researchers think this Jacob is a son of William and Sarah Burton Garrett. I haven't been able to support this but it does fit.
The following book excerpt is shown to reference a John Garrett of Amelia County, born in 1724 in Virginia. (Relation unknown, but assumed to be the John Garrett, listed at the above referenced website, and very likely a brother of Jacob Garrett.)
Note: The above was taken from a listing of 88 soldiers in the subject militia. The first part of the listing (numbers 1 thru 38) showed enlistment dates from Jan 1754 thru Dec 1756, followed by the soldier's home county (or town); the second part of the listing (numbers 39 thru 88) showed the word "draft" under enlistment, followed by the soldier's home county (or town). The information under the heading "Country" is assumed to mean "where born".
First found in Lothian. The name in scotland then became Frisell, still the common pronounciation in Tweedale, the first socts home of the family, in Lothian.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: John Frazer purchased land in New England in 1684. Margaret Frazer landed in the West Indies in the same year. David Fraser settled in the Barbados in 1745; John Fraser, his wife Christian, three daughters and a son, settled and others ???
