- p. 16 & 17 -- Anthony Collings traveled back to Devon, England and on 4/20/1716 presented a bill in Chancery court to claim benefit from the estate of his grandfather Thomas Collings late of Baronshill, in parish of Ugborough, Devon who died in 1672 leaving an only son Roger Collings who is the palintiff's father. The plaintiff's grandmother Dorothy Collings succeeded to Baronshill and held it until her death four or five years ago. Roger Collings died 7 or 8 years ago and, as his only son, the plaintiff became entitled to his grandfather's estate, but James Tillie of Pentillie Castle, Esq., Winifred Spurrell, widow, plaintiff's sister, and Henry Davis of Gravesend, Kent, mariner, who married Elizaberh Collings now deceased, also plaintiff's sister, conspire with George Stroude, Esq., of Ditcham, Devon, and Alice Stroude of the same, widow, to deny the plaintiff his rights. They claim that, by a settlement made in 1672 on the marriage of the plaintiff's father to Anne Roch, now deceased, Thomas Collings conveyed Baronshill to Richard Fownes, Esq., of Whitehouse, Ugborough, and William Stroude, gent., of Higherwal, Ugborough. Both Fownes and Stroude had died but the latter's heir is his nephew George Stroude and his executrix Alice Stroud.
- In her answer Winifred Spurrell says she is the only sister now living of the plaintiff. Her grandfather Thomas Collings, anticipating a marriage between his son Roger and Anne, daughter of Jerom Roch the elder of Plymouth, Devon, by deed of 2/10/1672, assigned Baronshill to Fownes and Stroude in order to provide portions for his son and his son'sheirs. When the defendant's sister Davis entered upon Baronshill the premises were in ruinous condition and her sister had to spend much money on it. The defendant claims that she and her sister Elizabeth who died 6 years ago were the only lawful issue of Roger Collings at the time of his death.
- Henry Davis reported to the court that Anthony Collings went overseas more than 25 years ago and was supposed dead. Two seafaring men on the ship maintained that they had thrown the body overboard. He could not say if the plaintiff was the same Anthony Collings -- THUS HE LOST HIS INHERITANCE TO BARONSHILL.

Capt Raleigh Croshaw VVeteran

Birth: 1570 Lancashire, England
Death: 22 Nov 1624 (aged 53-54) York County, Virginia, USA
Burial: Burial Details Unknown

Memorial #: 83478344

Bio:
Capt. Raleigh Croshaw Esq. and 2nd wife Ursula (born in York Co., VA in 1576) by whom he fathered Maj. Joseph Croshaw at Burton Parish, York Co., VA.

(Note: English settlers did not arrive in Jamestown until 1707. Raleigh Croshaw lived in Elizabeth Cittie in the 1634/24 Muster, and York County did not exist until long after he was dead, so it is unlikely that any of his three presumed sons could have been born there (Joseph, Richard, Noah). There is no actual evidence of who his first, or 2nd wife if he had one, could have been. Ursula is a made up name from an old myth, as is the myth that she could have been Native American. The Jamestowne Society, and NA Tribal Historians, do not accept or recognize any wife for him. There is also no evidence of any of his presumed sons living in Virginia until they began to acquire land by patents, Joseph in 1637, and Richard in 1645. Because approvals of patent applications could take several years, Joseph and Richard Croshaw could have arrived about 1634 and 1641 respectively. Joseph Croshaw was an attorney per several later York County court proceedings, and so was apparently well educated in the Law in England before he came to Virginia. There is, in fact NO evidence that Raleigh married at all, and it is only supposed and assumed (as so stated in the historical record) that Joseph, Richard and Noah could have been his sons. It is also very possible that they were sons of a different man, and all born and educated in England. This is somewhat supported by the very suspicious fact that the Raleigh given name never appears in any generation of his supposed descendants, while English naming traditions almost dictated that there should have been one in nearly every generation. Also, because, while Raleigh was quite prominent in his time, and many of his exploits are well documented by his contemporaries, but his contemporaries make absolutely no mention of any wife or children in any of those accounts. )

"Croshaw is believed to be from the Crashaw family of Crawshawbooth, Lancashire, England. He arrived in Jamestown, Virginia on the "Mary & Margrett", with the Second Supply in September 1608. His lst wife came over on the "Bona Nova" in 1620 but, as she is not mentioned in 1623 Census, she was likely dead by 1623. He was a member of the Virginia Company of London in 1609 and was still listed as an adventurer in the Company in 1618 and 1620. He was one of the authors of the complimentary verses prefixed to "The General History of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles" (1624) of John Smith of Jamestown.

Croshaw and his wife had at least two sons, possibly three:[1Joseph Croshaw lst married ? 2.Widow Finch; 3. Widow Anne Hodges; 4. Widow Margaret Tucker; 5. Widow Mary Bromfieldson Noah Croshaw (1614-1665), married Elinor ________&Richard Croshaw (1618-1667), married Elizabeth _________

Raleigh Croshaw was the local official in the Elizabeth City area. This settlement later became known as the Middle Plantation and later Williamsburg, Virginia. His sons were among the first to take advantage of this new settlement. Both Joseph and Richard are mentioned many times in the records. Joseph appears to have led a more public life, having been a member of the House of Burgesses from York as well as having served as a justice and as sheriff for York County, Virginia.

"Croshaw was member of a group with Captain John Smith in January 1609, who while attempting to trade for corn with the Indians at Opechancanough's village were almost overcome by surprise. This attack was thwarted in part by Raleigh Croshaw's quick reactions. Raleigh Croshaw then made a night trip back to Jamestown which helped to avoid further treachery. He appears to have been a very skilled Indian fighter."

"At the time of the massacre in March 1622, he was on a trading cruise on the Potomac. According to Captain John Smith's General History, Croshaw challenged the chief Opchanacanough or any of his warriors to fight him naked (without armor), an offer that was not accepted. When Captain John Smith published his General History in 1624, one of the verses in Volume III of the book had been written by Croshaw-and in his writing, John Smith implies a high opinion of Croshaw's knowledge of Indians and their way of making war.

Raleigh Croshaw accompanied Claiborne on his explorations and, with just a few men, successfully defended a remote trading outpost up on the Potomac River in the 1622 attack. Captain Raleigh Croshaw was in the Potomac River trading in a small bark, commanded by Captain Spilman. There an Indian stole aboard and told them of the massacre, (1622) and that Opchanacanough had been practicing with his King and Country to betray them, which they refused to do, but that the Indians of Werowocomoco had undertaken it. Captain Spilman went there, but the Indians after seeing that his men were so vigilant and well armed, suspected that they had been discovered, therefore, to delude him, they gave him such good deas in trade, that his vessel was soon nearly overloaded."

About 1623 a patent was issued to "Captain Raleigh Croshaw, Gentleman, of Kiccoughtan, "An Ancient Planter who hath remained in this country 15 years complete and performed many a worthy service to the Colony," for 500 acres (2 km²) by Old Point Comfort. This was based on his transporting himself, his servant and his wife in addition to adventuring 25 pounds sterling in the Company.

By the following year he was a burgess for Elizabeth City. In March 1624 he was issued a commission to trade with the Indians for corn. On this voyage he purchased a "great canoe" for 10,000 blue beads. The Corporation of Elizabeth City states that "Captain Raleigh Croshaw planted by Patent 500 acres (2 km²) between Fox Hill and the Pamunkey River to establish Elizabeth City." Captain Raleigh Croshaw was last referred to on November 22, 1624. On December 27, 1624, Captain Francis West was instructed to take an inventory of his estate.

By 1637 the York County settlers had already begun to breach their own palisade and move into Indian land on the other side. The area between Queens Creek and Ware Creek was called the "Indian Fields." It was a series of vast communal fields the Indians used for planting corn. Again, it was Joseph Croshaw and Richard Croshaw who were the first to move into the area. In 1637 and 1638, they each patented a few thousand acres about where the Camp Peary government center is located today. They controlled most of the land in that area for the next 20-25 years.

Lady Catherine Carey Knollys

Birth: Jun., 1524
Greater London, England
Death: Jan. 15, 1568
Greater London, England

Catherine was my 12th great grandmother.
Catherine was born at Hampton Court Palace in London, England. She was the daughter of Lady Mary Boleyn and supposedly the illegitimate Daughter of King Henry VIII.

It was never proven whether she was the Daughter of King Henry VII, but in recent times several historians have suggested and have come up with evidence supporting that theory:

The circumstantial case presented for the Careys being children of Henry VIII is founded on consideration of the following:

Royal grants from Henry VIII to William Carey delineate the period of the king's affair with Mary (Boleyn) Carey: from at least February 1522 to May 1526.4
Catherine Carey, Mary (Boleyn) Carey's daughter, was born in about 1524, not (as has been thought) in about 1530.
Henry Carey was called "the Kynge's son" in a contemporary (1535) source.
Evidence of the non-sexual marriage of William and Mary (Boleyn) Carey.
The "paternal" interest shown by Henry VIII in Catherine and Henry Carey as well as the extraordinary favor shown them by Elizabeth I.
The significance of the name "Hunsdon" as used by Henry Carey.
Reasons the Careys' royal paternity would never have been acknowledged.

Catherine Carey, Lady Knollys was born in the midst of her mother's affair with Henry VIII.31

That Henry VIII sought to provide for Catherine Carey is clear. Again, in about November 1539, at about the age of 15 and despite the Boleyn's fall from favour in 1536, Catherine Carey was appointed a maid of honor to Anne of Cleves. This fact is quite striking since in 1539 there would have been no known reason for the preferment of this insignificant niece of the fallen Queen Anne Boleyn. In fact, a close study of the State Papers and other records reveals the fact that the family of the Boleyns (or Bullens) suffered constant persecution and spoliation at the hands of Henry VIII, and afterwards of Elizabeth. By April/May 1540, she was married to (later: Sir) Francis Knollys, born by 1512, died 19 July 1596.33 With his marriage to Catherine Carey in 1540, Francis Knollys was created Gentleman Pensioner, his first royal appointment. Also upon their marriage, there was assurance of the manor of Rotherfield Grey, Oxon, to Fras. Knolles, Esq., and Katharine his wife" by Act of Parliament in April/May 1540.34

Catherine was Maid of Honour to Anne of Cleves and Catherine Howard. She was later lady-in-waiting to her cousin or possibly half sister, Elizabeth I.

In 1539, she was married to Sir Francis Knollys. Her husband was named a Knight of the Garter in 1593, but he had been knighted in 1547. From that date, Catherine became known as Lady Knollys. They had a total of twelve children:

Lettice Knollys (c. 1540 - 25 December, 1634). She married first Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, secondly Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester and thirdly Sir Christopher Blount.
Sir Henry Knollys (c. 1542 - 1583). He was a Member of Parliament representing first Shoreham, Kent (1563) and then Oxfordshire. Esquire of the Body to Elizabeth I. He was married to Margaret Cave (1549 - 1600), daughter of Sir Ambrose Cave and Margaret Willington.
Elizabeth Knollys. She married Sir Thomas Leighton, son of John Leighton of Watlesburgh and Joyce Sutton, in 1578. Her husband served as governor of Jersey.
William Knollys, 1st Earl of Banbury (c. 1544 - 25 May, 1632). He was married first to Dorothy Bray and secondly to Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk and his second wife Catherine Knyvett.
Edward Knollys (1546 - 1580). He was a Member of Parliament.
Sir Robert Knollys (1547 - 1626). Member of Parliament representing Reading, Berkshire (1572 - 1589), Brecknockshire (1589 - 1604), Abingdon, Oxfordshire (1604, 1624 - 1625) and finally Berkshire (1626). He married Catherine Vaughan, daughter of Sir Rowland Vaughan of Porthamel.
Richard Knollys (1548 - 21 August, 1596). Member of Parliament representing first Wallingford (1584) and then Northampton (1588). Married Joan Heigham, daughter of John Heigham of Cliffords.
Sir Thomas Knollys (d. 1596). Better known for service in the Eighty Years' War (1568 - 1648). Governor of Ostend in 1586. Married Odelia de Morana, daughter of John de Morada, Marquess of Bergen.
Sir Francis Knollys "the Young" (c. 1552 - 1643). Member of Parliament representing first Oxford (1572 - 1588) and then Berkshire (1597, 1625). Married Lettice Barrett, daughter of John Barrett of Hanham. Father-in-law of John Hampden.
Anne Knollys (c. 1553 - last reported alive 30 August , 1608). Married Thomas West, 2nd Baron De La Warr. Mother to Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr.
Catherine Knollys (c. 1560 - 20 December, 1620). Married first Gerald Fitzgerald, Baron Offaley and secondly Sir Phillip Butler of Watton Woodhall, a possible descendant of James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormonde.
Cecily Knollys. No known descendants.

Lady Knollys passed away on January 15, 1568 at Hampton Court Palace and was given what can only be described as a "royal" funeral by the bereaved Queen Elizabeth I. The opulent funeral accorded Lady Knollys by the queen (who paid £640 for it, under the Privy Seal) was overseen by the Earl Marshal the Duke of Norfolk and the Lord Treasurer the Earl of Leicester, Lady Knollys's funeral documents at Westminster Abbey were found with those of King Henry III, King Henry VI, Queen Mary II, King William III, Prince George of Denmark, Queen Anne, and Queen Caroline. The only non-royal person in this group was Lady Knollys.
Catherine Knollys was buried in April 1568 in St. Edmund's Chapel, Westminster Abbey at the queen's expense.
