George Aldrich has a cenotaph in The Old Mendon Cemetery, there has historically been an argument made that he is interred in Mendon. This is not the case as both he and wife Katherine have existing 17th Century Headstones in The George Aldrich Cemetery, Uxbridge. You may view the memorial created from the cenotaph in Old Mendon Cemetery here.

Robert Malone

Birth: 1705 Prince George County, Virginia, USA
Death: 1779 (aged 73–74) Northampton County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Burial Details Unknown

Memorial #: 208042903
Bio:
From Malone and Allied Families
By Dr. Randolph A.Malone

If Daniel Malone [1-1] is indeed the progenitor of the Virginia Malones, he was probably
dead by 8-3-1688 and his wife remarried. At a court on that date, "Robert Mallone, an orphan, and with consent of his father-in-law John Raine (?), chooses Samuel Tatem his guardian, who promises (to) allow the orphan at the end of his term, the usual things, and to use his utmost endeavor to cure his head." We must remember that in Colonial records of that era "father-in-law" was also used to mean "stepfather.") Robert's head must have healed, because he received from the Charles City Co. Court 200 lbs of tobacco for killing wolves in 1694. Robert must have been a very young man in 1694. No further mention of Robert, Mary or Daniel Malone is found in existing Charles City Co. records. A Robert alone married Mary Harrison in Somerset Co, MD. in 1728, but he is not likely to be the same Robert Malone, since the Somerset Co. Robert lived until 1779, which would make him about 100 years old at his death. What does stand out in these records is how intimately this Malone family was related to the Harrison family in the few records we have of them.

How many children Daniel Malone 1-1 may have had is unknown, but it is likely that one child was Robert Malone who was not of age in 1688, and that his Malone mother had remarried John Raine. It would seem, then, that Daniel Malone had died by 1688 and his widow had married John Raine. Robert Malone must have been a young man on his own by 1694. There is no proof of these relationships, but since Daniel, Mary and Robert are the only Malones mentioned in Charles City County, VA records, the circumstantial evidence is suggestive. The other Malone boys were probably too young to be apprenticed out at the time of that record.

Between 1688 - 1715 there was an apparent second generation of Malones who were of
land-owning age, living either in Charles City County or its daughter county, Prince George.

Two men comfortably fit this age and location category: Daniel Malone 2-1 and Robert
Malone 2-2. Robert Malone was left an orphan in Charles City Co. records in 1688. His
mother, apparently named Mary, had remarried John Raine by 4-13-1688. Daniel Malone 2-1, who also had close relationships with the Bolling and Wynne family, died in Prince George County by Feb.1713.

Robert Malone 2-2 is the most closely associated of his generation with the probable progenitor Daniel Malone 1-1. He is found as an under age orphan in Charles City County court records on 8-3-1688: "Robert Mallone, an orphan, and with consent of his father-in-law (step-father) John Raine, chooses Samuel Tatem his guardian, who promises (to)allow orpahn at end of his term, the usual things, and to use his utmost endeavor to cure his head." Since no other Malones are noted in Charles City County records except Daniel and Mary Malone, it must be assumed without definite proof that Robert was the son of Daniel Malone 1-1 who had died by 1688. His mother Mary Malone then remarried John Raine, and Robert, probably a teenager, was apprenticed out to Samuel Tatem. Robert apparently recovered from his head ailment, because a Charles City County, VA court record on 11-9-1694 notes that Joshua Wynne and Robert Malone were each paid (among others) 200 lbs. of tobacco for killing wolves. Robert was either the oldest or the
youngest of Daniel's children at his death, since no other orphans seemed old enough
(or young enough) for apprenticeship. With so many records missing in Charles City
County, we are left without further data. No further information is known about Robert. Did he move to Maryland? Could he be the same Robert who married Mary Harrison in Somerset Co, MD in 1728? It is not likely, since that Robert Malone did not die until 1779.

He married SARAH ELIZABETH STARKE, daughter of JAMES STARKE and MARY FRANKLIN. She was born 1763, and died 1840.

Notes for ELIAS BUTLER:
The History of Elias Butler, the Miller
North Carolina to Tennessee

Elias Butler was born in 1758 in Anson County, North Carolina. He was the son of Christopher Butler (VI). He married Sarah Elizabeth Stark, the daughter of James Starke and Mary Elizabeth Franklin in about 1778. Elias served in the Revolutionary War in the Continental Line of North Carolina from the Salisbury District enlisting in 1780 (he served under General Lillington.) The same year he had a watermill on Rock Creek in Montgomery Co. By 1792 (after losing his first mill) Elias Butler had a growing family and had built a new mill on Rock Creek, a few hundred yards down from the first. In the reconstructed 1784-87 census he is shown to possess one slave. On January 4, 1793, he sold the land that he had inherited and is listed as insolvent in Duplin County in 1794. He must have kept his mill in Montgomery Co. as he witnessed a deed there that same year. He was living there in 1800.

Elias Butler in Carroll County, Tennessee

The flood of people from North Carolina, encouraged by the offering of free land for military service, brought the Butler's with it. Around 1823, Elias and Sarah were moving to Carroll County, Tennessee and were among the first settlers of this area in the western part of the state. Their nine remaining children and their spouses accompanied them, as did the three daughters of their deceased son Reuben and their mother Susan. The Butler family apparently entered Carroll County by water. There were few roads at that time leading west, so they likely went by flat-boat up the Cumberland River to the Mississippi, then a few miles down the Mississippi to the Tennessee River. They would have poled up the Tennessee to the Sandy River which flows into Carroll County. There they settled along the Sandy River. Joshua, James M. (II) and Levi Butler all ran watermills on that river. Elias' children and their descendants spread over the county and to Arkansas where an area was named for them called Butler's Barrens. Though they rarely rose to high public office, they made their name in small business and in prosperous farming. Due partly to their large number, the Butler family was an important force in Carroll County in the nineteenth century.

and was survived by his wife (26 October, 1709) Penelope Higgins Manley (claimed to be d/o John Higgins and sister of wife of John Elliot – John Elliott. See Hearsay liber “penelopeHigginsAncestry.pdf” in which one researcher claims she was born in 1685 at Westmoreland co., VA and that her mother was Penelope Hull Higgins - d/o Augustus Hull and Anne Sturman Hull). A cross-reference of source material in the LMGA indicates that Penelope Higgins Manley could not have been the sister of Sabella Elliot who m. John Elliot. This is because that Penelope Higgins m. Daniel McCarty and she was not born until 1712 (tombstone inscription showing date of birth and husbands name). But William Manley and Penelope Higgins Manley were m. before 1710. This is the same book that contained the error regarding John Manley IIs progeny. The book is entitled “The Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate”. Buuuttt, there’s a mystery here. According to two sources the Penelope Higgins that m. William Manley was the sister of Sabella Higgins. This would also make Augustine Higgins the brother of Penelope Higgins Manley and thus explain the cousin “Hugh West” reference in John Manley wmI’s will. This fits with the fact that an Ann Higgins was the administrator of the estate of Augustine Higgins, that is, Ann Turley West-Higgins. William Manley’s estate was apparently not inventoried until 1727.

Caroline Compton Thompson

Birth: 1870 Clifton, Wayne County, Tennessee, USA
Death: 1961 (aged 90-91) Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee, USA
Burial: Hollywood Cemetery, Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee, USA
Memorial #: 14502576

Bio:
Caroline Compton Thompson, well known in First Baptist Church and Sunday School circles and prominently identified with the United Daughters of the Confederacy over a long period of years, died Saturday night at 8:45 at her home after an extended illness. Caroline was the widow of the late Charles Thompson, long-time Jackson merchant, who died in 1940. She was born in Clifton, Tenn., daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Compton, was educated at Kenton, Tenn., and taught school in Kentucky before coming to Jackson in 1915. Caroline merged the three women's societies of the First Baptist Church into a single unit. She taught a Sunday School Class for many years and was known for her knowledge of the Bible and her ability to teach. Often referred to as one who lived in her own life the admonitions she gave to her Sunday School class, she had commanding influence among all ages in her church. Her fine traits marked her as a lovable Christian character. She was one of a group of UDC members designated by Mrs. Nathan Bachman of Chattanooga, then state president, to complete the roll of Tennessee soldiers who participated in the Battle of Shiloh, a work for which she received high commendation. She organized the Junior Red Cross Chapter in Jackson and was instrumental in directing relief work in the flood that struck in West Tennessee in the thirties. Services were held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Rev. Wayne Dehoney. pastor of the First Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Wm. S. Bates, assistant pastor, conducted the services which were held at the home. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery with Griffin Funeral Home In charge.
